Bonaci was ranked in the top 20 by BA, FG, and MLB. He and Politi (top 30 for all three outlets mentioned and The Athletic (KLaw)) are two guys we're comparatively way low on who will be priority targets for us next month. Looking at Politi again yesterday, it did seem like we were likely way too low on him. On Bonaci, we basically got screwed by the changes in Fall Instructs, where Ian would've had a great first-hand look at him in the past. In response to my question to him: Jim Callis @jimcallismlb Bonaci was the best prospect among an intriguing DSL contingent & does have a cannon arm. Switch-hitter w/good approach for his age, solid runner, should stay at SS. redsox #Top30Prospects

Love his dunk on the *Astros though 27. Houston Astros It’s funny, but when you get rid of all of your amateur scouts, your drafts get a whole lot worse. If it weren’t for the work of the international scouting department, helmed by Oz Ocampo (now with Pittsburgh), this would absolutely be the bottom system in the majors.

Top 100 per Kiley McDaniel at ESPN, formally of Fangraphs. Downs 50, Casas 57.

Call me crazy but I wouldn’t surprised if we are somewhere around the middle of the pack around 15 by the end of the season. Aside from maybe Houck and Dalbec who could graduate this year there are several guys that had strong years last year that will be down in the minors at least another year in Mata, Ward, Downs, Duran, and Casas and it’s at a position of need. Then in the lower minors there are a number of interesting guys that could be on the verge of breaking out. Then if Groome can show promise after all that time off and Song stays we are really on the upswing. On the major league level we are also in decent shape with cost controlled players in Devers, Benintendi, Verdugo, Chavis, and Hernandez.

The additions of Downs and Wong make up for a lot.

Probably easiest to just post the tweet... Chris, you obviously have an Excel spreadsheet ... can you post that list as a code block? If it's possible to cut and paste from a tweet into Excel, I don't know the trick.

Politi last season: 28.0 31 26 23 20 33, 7.39, .272 / .382 / .421 through June 11 27.0 15 08 06 08 32, 2.00, .165 / .238 / .253 to end of July 23.2 10 03 02 09 31, 0.76, .125 / .213 / .175 August I wish we'd noticed this so that everybody could have talked about inevitable regression to the mean as August started. Better yes, what would ROS projection models have given him on July 31? Probably the 4.75 ERA he had entering the month.
I did a little number-crunching on the lists so far to determine the biggest differences between SP and the consensus of the other 4 ranking sets. (For the guys who missed Law's top 20, I assigned them 21 to 27 based on the consensus among BA, FG, and MLB).
SP too low -29.5 Polito (22.5 - 52) -24.5 Bonaci (17.5 - 42) -8.25 Liu (17.75 - 26) -4.75 Lugo (15 - 10.25) Everyone else too low
10.75 Aldo Ramirez (24.75 - 14) 8.25 Zeferjahn (21.25 - 13) --- Cedanne Rafalea (21 SP, nowhere else) --- Pedro Castellanos (23, ditto) Jorge Rodriguez (25, FG 33, no other mentions)
The scouting reports for Rafaela and Castellanos don't match the rankings at all. If there were any updates / news on those two guys, I missed it. By my count, 15 of the 60 top prospects here are ticketed for short-season ball. What's remarkable is that FG had three more such guys that haven't cracked the SP Top 60, ranked 30, 32, and 35: Naysbel Marcano, Albert Feliz, and Eduardo Vaughn.

Seems like they put a ton of stock into DSL production. Not quite sure about that

I agree. There's some talent in there, but until we see what they do stateside I'm a little leery on the high grades. What we all need to agree to, is that the staff needs to get eyeballs on those players. That's what the donations are for.

How much further does our system rank without Song? It's a good question. I think he'd make it in the top 5 (edit: top 5 overall on Sox Prospects list) easily if he played this year.

2020 impact: Bobby Dalbec and Tanner Houck Ranked breakout pick: Gilberto Jimenez Unranked breakout pick: Brainer Bonaci
He also says Song is "probably the third-best talent" and would presumably rank that high if his service commitment were to be waived.

First I've heard anything of Wilkelman Gonzalez. "Winkleman", as I call him, was one of the prospects I've followed, along with Vaughn, from the DSL. I liked their reports and someone else that had seen them prior to the DSL season had brief write-ups (one sentence) on a few of the prospects and those two I really liked what was said. If I find the post I will bump the thread. Winkleman was someone on the map, along with several other DSL prospects. There were lots of glowing reports about several prospects but Wink's caught my eye, along with Vaughn. I think I liked the reports on Gabe Jackson and Bryan Gonzalez as well. Now we have more than one sentence about Winkleman to go on. Edit: bump from 2020
