It's Danny, so you can't leave out him using it to acquire assets. A smart GM and that is Danny could be the third team on a few trades, while getting some young players and picks.
Imagine what a team would give up to clear space for Giannis for example? You could get a few future first round picks.
Get ready you're in for a year of endless trade ideas.

Also remember you dont have to use all of the exception. So anyone who makes more than any other exception they have and less than or equal to 27.9 is someone they could take into the exception in a trade.

You can actually take a bigger contract back than 28.5 as the same player salary matching applies. TPE is for 28.5 as that’s GH’s first year salary. It was originally reported as 27.9 tho.

It probably doesn't open up the Celtics for Giannis, does it?
If there was ever a guy the Celtics would go all in for, it would be him. Imagine Giannis, Brown, and Tatum on the same team. Geeze. Dream scenario.

Dream scenario. Only if he tells Milwaukee he’s 100% leaving because they won’t trade him in any other circumstance and they can’t use that in a sign and trade for him.

I dont believe that is true. You're not trading the TPE, you are taking someone into it so I believe the salary has to be under that newly reported amount. To that point, many beat writers have been stating their relief that the TPE is less than Beal's salary (sparing us all from a year of those trade ideas).

I think this is a good year for a massive trade exception. I expect certain owners to be sellers in this market. Celtics are one of the only teams that take on a star without giving much up in salary. The deadline is going to be very interesting.

Not if you trade Marcus Smart or some combination of players salaries for Beal. Right?

Nevermind the hard cap, you can't get Beal, yet it's crazy close. Being reported at 28.5 million plus $100,000, so 28.6 million, Beal is 28.75 million.
Adding Smart means you just use less of the trade exception, as you can't top 28.6 million coming back.
Wanna get crazy? Trade for player using exception say Garry Harris, then trade him and Smart for Beal. Yet you'd need to also dump money to stay under the tax line. Highly unlikely that happens, yet technically it seems possible.

I wouldn’t trade Marcus Smart for all of king Midas’ silver!
Another interesting thing they can do is take advantage of the teams looking to dump salary to open things up for the 2021 offseason, which looks to be nuts

What would you give up for Gobert? Is he the missing piece? He's likely the best player to fit into the trade exception. Everyone has heard the rumors of the Jazz trading him. They just signed Favors and drafted a center in the first round. Who knows if they would actually trade him, yet they might so they don't lose him for nothing.
You'd have to move salary, around 5 million to stay under the tax line. Yet that's doable.
I'm frankly torn about it. He's a monster down low. Yet he's also not a new age floor spacing big either.

Stupid question, but does the exception expire? Yes in one year I believe it was Karalis who thought there might be an adjustment bc of the crazy year. Basically thinking that we can expect it to be available through next offseason but maybe not quite the full 365 days.

Right, at a minimum it will be thru the entirety of next offseason but not necessarily into the start of the year.

Can he switch on the perimeter? How’s his passing? I really don’t know him well. I’m less concerned about floor spacing if he can pass and if he’s switchable on defense.

Teams don't usually make trades the first month or two of a season.

This is the issue I think we are having, are you comparing him to centers or PFs playing center? I think this was the big issue with Turner, he doesn't look great switching compared to Theis or a Green, yet those are PFs playing center. Those stats I showed for Turner show Gobert doing it a ton and not being bad at it. Yet he's not Bam either. He's not going to be Theis who was crazy elite doing it.

Compared to being effective in our defensive system. Well Stevens has had what Sullinger, Horford and Theis at center. All are PFs playing center, which is why everyone complains when true centers go off. Yet Horford and Theis were highly switchable. Yet the D has always been limit easy points in the paint. No one is better at that than Gobert. That's really the issue at center in today's NBA. There's like one guy who's perfect in Davis and he wants to play PF and not bang down low. Everyone else has pros and cons, like even Embiid. It's frankly why I loved Turner, he did a bunch of things. You'd think getting Gobert would be a no brainer and maybe it is, yet he has pro's and con's. Yet so do most players, example Kemba Walker. You want guys that are elite at one thing or guys that are solid two way guys? Then there's the fact I think Robert Williams can be a beast. He's the perfect player for center in today's NBA. He's just raw and still learning. Just throwing out options. I don't think I'd do it and maybe that's crazy. Yet he's a true center who can't shoot. That limits you in today's NBA and limits the floor spacing for Tatum, Walker and Brown. Shooting really matters to me, especially if you're talking about a guy playing 35 plus minutes a game. I'm assuming the whole league does what Toronto and Miami did in the playoffs. Why wouldn't you?

For a few reasons one you don't have the resources or personal to pull it off. Even the teams that do would use it sparingly during the regular season perhaps crunch time in a close game.
