full retraction (apologies for commenting on my own comment): fake crowd noise makes MLB completely unwatchable for me. MLB as reality TV is not something I'm in on. Effectively Snooki at shortstop. I hope they dump this before games count. Even worse were what looked like fake cut outs of 'fans' ostensibly placed in the seats behind home plate..OMG! There are teams marketing cutouts made with the buyers picture with locations at various prices.

This is as good a place as any to put this I think.
Not sure if it's behind the paywall, but for those who can get to it this Baseball America article lays out the master plan MLB has for the majors, minors, independents, and college baseball, and for working to develop high-school players as well. When all the changes started coming down with the advent of COVID-19, I wondered if it wouldn't play into the hands of MLB and the owners. After reading this, I believe it has. The players are going to have to be very fast on their feet. The goal is nothing less than a consolidation of as much control of stateside baseball as possible under the aegis of Major League Baseball, to hone that monopoly to a fine edge. Baseball will be restarted with a very different look and feel.

The fake crowd noise is atrocious, but the cardboard cutouts are funny and I support them.

Hmmm. Team generated, in-game, noises. What could go wrong, eh ? Actually, I've only seen positive comments from players/managers on the fan sound effects. Cardboard cutouts are certainly groundbreaking. Haha, imagine if some batter rips the head off a fan cutout. ADD: My bad, wax figures not cutouts. As an aside, this is fascinating: www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/whos-who-on-the-beatles-sgt-peppers-lonely-hearts-club-band-album-cover/ There is an interactive map as well. ADD2: Haha. my sister's first boyfriend (before he became famous) is on that cover. Dion (and The Belmonts as in Belmont Mass.).

When I was a kid my dad took me to a game at Fenway. The Washington Senators were in town and Ted Williams was managing the team. Williams got an ovation and tipped his cap which was the headline in the next day's Globe sports section. Frank Howard hit two HRs and the Sox got crushed. What I remember most though was an old man (like 80 ) sitting behind us was the first adult I ever heard use the F-word in public. We had nice seats so maybe he was a regular or his age gave him privilege because no one paid attention to him. And it wasn't once it was the whole game. The guy mostly yelled, "F--king bums" over and over. So the Sox need to add that somewhere in the crowd noise mix tape.

Jen McCaffrey @jcmccaffrey · 1h Red Sox prepping for the season now have PA announcer Henry Mahegan announcing players coming to bat and walk-up music. Things are getting fancy here. . . . Jen McCaffrey jcmccaffrey · 36m Jonathan Arauz just homered off Jeffrey Springs into the front row of the Monster seats. Almost knocked over a cardboard cutout.

Sean McAdam @sean_McAdam · 2h Following a 1-2-3 first inning, Martin Perez doffs his cap and waves to imaginary fans as he walks off the mound and heads for the dugout.

No crowd noise at Tampa (St Pete) tho. impossible to hear any fans due to hundreds of infernal cow bells clanging all the time. Everyone does realize we have Curt Schilling to blame for that racket i hope.

I was thinking about that, sortof, maybe they should allow the fans to drop off large homemade stuffed people dolls.

A couple of items worth considering: first, this update on Eduardo Rodriguez that mentions heart-related complications from covid, and the fact that he is apparently fatigued after throwing about 20 pitches. Second, this discussion with an expert on long-term effects of covid who describes lung damage, shortness of breath, and fatigue as symptoms that have stayed with patients months after contracting the virus. This is mainly people who weren't even hospitalized, and didn't even necessarily have a bad case of the disease. He says that maybe 90% of people who get sick from covid are still feeling symptoms two months later, and there's a good chance that for many the lung damage may be permanent. It's just a reminder that "will they die or not" is not really the right frame for thinking about the covid risks for ballplayers (or the rest of us!). It's easy to imagine how these symptoms could disrupt a player's career. Get well, Eduardo.

I hope he'll be alright, but I really hope that he doesn't try to come back this year. His health is a lot more important that this weird season. The part about permanent lung damage is extremely frightening. Just because the death rates might be considered "low" that doesn't mean that you get covid, get over it and it's all good. Contracting covid is something to be avoided as much as possible. I hope he'll be alright, short-term and long-term.

It IS scary.

Marlins basically have a locker room outbreak. 12 players and 2 coaches. They've canceled their game tonight.

And the Yankees can't want to be using that visiting locker room today.
We basically got two days of fun before it got to "I don't feel good about this at all."

One question, if season is canceled now, will the CBT of Sox be reset?

Completely shocked that a team from South Florida is rampant with Covid-19 - after all, governor Wrong DeSantis thinks it's ok to open schools in a week or so, just how bad can things be? /s

One question, if season is canceled now, will the CBT of Sox be reset? No. I believe it was mentioned in another thread but the Sox need the season to get past 8/31 in order for the CBT to reset. Not off to a great start on that front

This is going to be real trouble if it happens to a major league team.

As much as I love baseball it is hard to imagine how this season is going to last a month. It reminds me of Florida reopening based on nothing more than being optimistic and hopeful that a miracle will happen. On top of that the season, even if it is completed, will likely always be seen as legitimate only by it's own standards. If by some miracle the Sox won the WS I know I'd still see them as having 9 titles + that one gimmicky 2020 thing.

Now Phillies-Yankees has been cancelled. In a 60 game season, losing a game is kind of a big deal. And this is 3 games in.
This is not going to work, unfortunately. It also makes me doubt the NFL season. The NBA has a few advantages... the “bubble” and fewer players. If a team gets sick, they can run out the D-leaguers, if necessary.
Obviously this is also why the idea schools should open is insane.

Seriously, they should have set it up in Montana or North Dakota. That would actually work.
