I can't imagine that would fly under the rules. And if a player did that they'd probably get blackballed. They'd also be forgoing service time and a paycheck, so I'm not sure why you wouldn't just ride it out at that point. I don't know...There'd be a bit of beauty in Kris Bryant playing for only the first 8ish games of the season...

Things are ramping up. More virus cases around the country. More deaths. By the 24th it might be too dangerous to play. I'm not getting my hopes up. Its already too dangerous. But money talks even at the expense of peoples lives.

The Kopech decision is a little surprising. Just expanding on what Brock Holt said about his own situation, I kind of assumed most players that opted out would be established players already on long term deals. Price is the perfect example. I’m not questioning his decision. Just saying he’s way outside the profile of guys I expected to see opting out. It’s interesting. I hope that Kopech is doing okay. Apparently, this is not related to his TJ surgery: www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/29450657/white-sox-pitching-coach-concerned-michael-kopech

It's surprising to me Don Cooper would say so much to the media as it's hard to see how his comments are in any way helpful. As pitchers and teams almost always downplay TJ concerns until it comes out that there is a TJ concern I don't think it can be assumed it isn't an issue with his elbow. Perhaps when he ramped up to 100mph in Spring Training he began to feel tightness or pain which he recognized as a bad sign ? That right there would be a cause for "anxiety and depression."

I don't think Don Cooper is helping out with those comments. The TJ surgery could increase the anxiety and depression. It sounds as though Kopech has been dealing with these issues for a decent amount of time, however. I hope he gets back on track. Such an immense talent.

Today's intrasquad game is being shown live on YouTube. There's a link to it on the NESN website.

Yup! I stumbled on it today.
That roar of the crowd, the barker's hawking "cold beahh", "hot dawgs heahh" and Jerry back in the booth.....
...were absent...
Still.

All of the intrasquads have been streamed (pretty sure at least) and Varitek has been behind the plate, I think, in alternating games? I know he's done it at least twice.

Imagine Bob Uecker as an ump. I'd pay to see that.

I guess I'm reading it differently, but I see Cooper basically going as far as he legally can to indicate that Kopech needs help/support to try to get people to reach out to him.

I think that is what he is most likely doing but I don't think publicizing it is helpful. For one thing one of the things Kopech mentioned was he wasn't comfortable in the spotlight, didn't like being the center of attention. Maybe someone like Brian Johnson could reach out to him but it would probably be best if this wasn't a story for the media.

The pandemic probably isn't helping Kopech. Again, he's doing the right thing by staying the hell home regardless. But, hopefully he has a lot of resources at his disposal such as mental health counselors that he can meet with on zoom.

I think the situation is completely fluid though because I can see players on good teams becoming more concerned. Fun question of the day, assuming a season do we see the Cleveland Spiders record of 20 wins in a season broken? Asterisk of course.

I am almost teary at the prospect of getting to watch preseason MFY/Mets on the deuce this afternoon, and I absolutely hate both of those teams. Strange world. I'm still doubting they can get 60 games in, but in the meantime, PLAY BALL!

If you are not high risk, you do not get pay or service time. Teams can opt to award that to players if they wish, which seems more likely for someone who, for example, has a young child (think Posey) or lives with someone else high risk.
If you are high risk (so far, just Hicks), you do get pay and service time.

MLB as reality TV is not something I'm in on. Effectively Snooki at shortstop. I hope they dump this before games count.

Even worse were what looked like fake cut outs of 'fans' ostensibly placed in the seats behind home plate..OMG!
