Has anyone noticed that blast was from his two strike set up where he chokes up four or five inches and is in a deep crouch. Sorry for picspam--I will get more threads in the photo forum, honest. And then... he put his head down and went back to the dugout. Didn't even get to circle the bases.

Dalbec and Casas will make this a much less appealing team to start a brawl with.

How is that only 380 feet? Has anyone noticed that blast was from his two strike set up where he chokes up four or five inches and is in a deep crouch. Massive Tree trunk thighs...Oooff. I love the choking up on the bat...no question that makes the bat quicker and enhances bat to ball. Ted Williams advocated that. Barry Bonds did it all the time...two fair hitters. But it's essentially gone with the Tyrannasaur sadly. Does anyone know why Casas changes his stance with 2 strikes? What improvements does he believe it offers.

Thanks KB. I now remember the Votto reference. The 2 strike crouch is a mystery to me. Undoubtedly he has been asked that but I don't recall the benefits it confers.

Casas clobbers one about 400ft to right center off Marcus Walden. That's a 20 year old High-A kid absolutely spanking a big league reliever. Damn, you just gotta love it. EDIT: This bomb was also from choked-up 2 strike stance

It wouldn't surprise me I give the odds of both Groome and Casas starting the year at Portland at greater than 50%.

Watched the game (20 hrs delayed).
Pivetta pitched 3 innings. Tall guy with an over the top delivery so his pitches come in on a downward slope. The mechanics looked OK to my untrained eye but the results say he's going to need a lot of work, It seemed like he was having release point issues with his breaking stuff as he yanked a lot of them to the glove side. Change looked decent. The hitters were sitting on his fastball and made solid contact. Stuff was good but he's going to need a lot of work.
Simpson had decent stuff but poor command. Walden looked like recent major league Walden, Hopefully he will get it back together, good story.
Ockimey (464), Lucroy (406) and Casas(414) with HRs.
Duran with two doubles, one standard and one leg double.
Ockimey with an outstanding play at 1st.
Casas ABs were particularly impressive, all quality ABs. 2 walks and a HR. The HR was his 2 strike approach.
ADD: Casas HR was off Walden. He grooved one and Casas knew what to do with it.

Casas is looking great today against Houck. Two great ABs that end in BBs, then just drove a ball to left-center for a ground rule double. I think they just said on air the double had an exit velo of 97mph.
Houck otherwise looking pretty good, has 7Ks through 3 IP.
Houck now at 9Ks through 4 IP. Struck out Casas that inning. Getting some swing and miss on his splitter, but also has at least 3 BB (didn't catch the whole first inning).
Duran just absolutely crushed a HR to right field. Announcers saying it might have ended up in the parking lot.
Houck came back out for the fifth, got the first batter to groundout, then Casas walked (3rd BB) and the game was called.

Isn't it time to see if Houck can start a few games in the big leagues? Give him 3-4 starts down the stretch here

There's no replacement for a regular minor league season to develop and judge talent, but if you have to have these exhibition games, you can't ask for much more than what our best prospects have shown there.

For the younger guys, this experience could be better than regular minor league games. Playing next to more experienced players can't hurt. Somewhat similar to sending younger prospects to the AFL. Guys like Lucroy have been working with the pitchers and catchers and I've heard several anecdotal comments.

Also the MLB game is showing a lot of talented younger guys making big leaps and doing very well. With the Sox I think anyone who's 24-25 should be pushed. Maybe not with pitchers but position players. Particularly with Dalbec and Casas. Dalbec is 25 and Casas is 20. The Sox need to see what Dalbec is now because Casas is his heels and if five years younger.

It has to be good to be challenged like this day in, day out and see some progress but not having to see your triple slash line up on the scoreboard.

I've seen no updates on Bryan Mata; which I take as good news. Can anyone confirm he isn't injured ? Or that he has just a mild strain or something ?

"Update on RHP Bryan Mata, who exited Sunday's sim game at McCoy Stadium with a left leg injury. Via Ben Crockett: "He felt a little better, but still had mild soreness today. He received treatment, played light catch and will continue treatment tomorrow." #RedSox"

SimCity (altho I can't imagine that isn't copyrighted)
The announcers also said it was likely a cramp on the sim game but said he might not get his regular start which is tomorrow.
No starters and just an inning and a half today (yesterday). There are a lot of relievers with definite upside in camp. Two, Simpson and Blair pitched well today. Casas still taking amazingly quality ABs.
Not much else to report.
