The fact that there hasn't been a post here in 17 hours seems to indicate that I'm not the only one with a serious lack of enthusiasm for such a bloated playoff system. I hated the idea of it when it was announced, but kind of assumed that once it came around I'd be into it. Nope. I honestly don't bother following the NBA playoffs until round 2, or the NHL until conference finals (if the Bruins are still in it). This feels the same to me. The Sox getting to the first round would no longer be exciting must-see TV, but a minimum threshold for the season. ^^^ This. I think the lack of commentary is less an indictment of the playoff system and more a reflection on the fact the Sox aren't in it. I don't have as strong feelings about the playoff schedule as most of you. I feel more strongly about the other rules changes like pitch clocks, automatic strike zones, and players at 2nd etc. Maybe I'm an old fart, but part of baseballs intrigue to me has always been it's timelessness, and it's humanity. I'll go back under my rock now. You kids get off my lawn.

www.mlb.com/news/ranking-all-8-wild-card-games-wednesdayThis strikes me as a very weird thing for MLB to have on its own site. Pumping up the fact there are 8 playoff games is great, but why are you ranking them? "Cubs-Marlins? Pfft. It's not even the best pitching matchup in the series! Don't bother watching this one."

Wow. Blake Snell just gave up his first hit to a guy I didn't know existed (but wish I did) named Alejandro Kirk. FYI, Kirk is listed as 5'8" and 265 lbs. Go ahead and let that picture develop in your head. Yes, he is a catcher. He's pretty awesome. Plump, short guy with great minor league patience and bat to ball skills; made the jump from A+ to the majors this year at age 21 and hasn't looked overmatched yet. Smoky Burgess lives!

Smoky Burgess lives! It was a nice piece of hitting to the right side. He was facing a pitcher that was totally in control, and he didn't try to do too much.

With a game starting nearly every hour, you do need to make some decisions, but I agree that it's not really a good look for MLB to tell you which games are really not worth watching. They could easily have just made this a "1-2 interesting things to watch for in each of today's games" post. Not to mention that I don't agree with the order here. The Padres are one of the most exciting teams, and you put them at the bottom of your list? And let's not forget to remind everyone how much the Twins suck in the playoffs, yet again.

Jeff Passan at ESPN: As opposed to the 75.0% that you'd expect if the teams were evenly matched, which they were, since this is all the 3-game series. And which they're not in these playoffs.
I guess that where Passan grew up, "awfully interesting" meant "almost completely meaningless for two different reasons."
(I'm actually being too harsh ... winning the first game of the series apparently makes you 0.7% more likely to win the series than you would otherwise expect.)

Man, I feel for them and the fanbase. I have a good friend who is a big Twins fan and I can't even bring myself to express condolences to him because I doubt he even wants them at this point.

My wife and I are having a debate... Do you have to be a douchebag for the Yankees to sign you, or is there some sort of transformation that occurs when you join that team?

walks and yankees devil magic on weak contact all inning, and cleveland is handing them another YES classic... For those who didn't watch the game, in the top of the 9th, Brad Hand threw Glyber Torres an absolutely perfect 2-2 pitch, on the low inside corner, that was called ball 3. If that's an out -- and it should have been -- the Indians very likely win, as he got the next two hitters easily with higher stakes. Torres then hits the next pitch 69.8 mph at a -49 angle, and Hand drops the high bounce (which is mysteriously ruled a hit instead of an error), and the third out becomes a game-tying SF.

They cannot use this trashbag playoff format during a real season.

It's truly amazing to see pitchers who have been great all season long go up against the Yankees and suddenly laboring to throw strikes. It's almost as if there is a Yankee strike zone. Actually two Yankee strike zones. One for Yankee pitchers and another for the pitcher on the opposing team.

It was a beautiful pitch, and the ump clearly missed it. It's not like it was right down the middle, though, and the umps have been pretty terrible this year, regardless of who's playing, so I'm not surprised at a missed call on the edge of the zone (although, it's the exact opposite of the screw job that happened to the Giants on the last day of the season when anything within 6 inches of the plate was somehow a strike in the 8th and 9th innings).
For me, when Hand dropped the high chopper, I was basically done. At that point, there seemed to be no way the Indians were getting out of the half inning without giving up a couple.

Folks not watching these games are missing some great stuff.
Open up a tab on a browser that has the scores of the all the games, or follow them on your phone, or whatever. If a game is close when it gets late, go watch it.
The A's just broke their streak of lowing winner-take-all games, and I actually got choked up on Billy Beane's behalf. Now they get to knock off the Astros while the Rays beat the Yankees.

Huh. I never liked Billly Beane. The whole Moneyball thing was so overblown. They won a WS with ‘roidsball, and Moneyball never got it done. Maybe Brad Pitt should play a guy who, you know, wins?

Have you read the book? It's really fantastic. Also, the whole Moneyball thing completely reshaped the sport.

Have you read the book? It's really fantastic. Also, the whole Moneyball thing completely reshaped the sport. I have not. Don’t care. Rather read Malamud. It has changed the sport, but for many of us it has made it worse. The revolution may help quantify how to win, but it has made it borrrrring. I mean, Pernell Whitaker was a far better fighter by all technical measures and won more and easier, but people would rather watch Arturo Gatti. The Hattebergs of the world might win games (but not World Series!), but I don’t want to pay to see them walk or whatever.

I'm guessing Billy Beane is the leader in wins/$$ spent by a fair margin.
