2021-22 International Signing Period

Post by congusgambler33 on Jan 16, 2022 19:26:42 GMT -5
My guess is that they are taking this route to build up as much depth as possible to make the system stronger for trading pieces. The Yankees went for the top player and that is how they want to approach this draft. I don't have a problem with how the Sox are doing it. Just hopes it produces productive players.

Maybe there's some sort of analytics that suggests it's smarter to spread international bonus money around rather than spend it all on one big fish?

Pathetic personal attack towards Sarasoxer.. He sees the kids 1st hand who manage to make it past the DSL league a LOT faster than most everyone else here does and was just asking a simple question, not asking for some knucklehead to show how non brilliant they are.. Hope u and Steve from Bradenton doing ok Sarasoxer.. One day we'll all get together for a game somewhere close, or down at the Fort. Thanks JohnSilver52, appreciate your defense for Sarasoxer. Love to get together this year with you both. Some folks on here can be quite sarcastic. We love watching and following these kids, but some can be quite negative. I understand where Sarasoxer is coming from my self. Hopefully their system works, spending on lots of kids for less, but I'd have loved them going all-out like the Yanks to sign a Dominguez. Hey Steve, Wife is my wheels now since unable to drive last several years any longer. Probably one of the FSL teams close to you 2 as home team would be best over the summer, tho we have been talking about this meet for years. HAHA. We've got to make it happen 1 day. Didn't catch but *1* FSL Tigers game all last year, tho did see a bunch of afternoon GCL tiger games. Hope u guys had better luck with local teams.

They will spend pretty much to the cap limit. There will almost certainly be one or two guys who got less than a million (or even less than $100k) who pop in a year or two. These are givens at this point. But I think the inability to trade for more cap space has led them to go more conservative on the top bonuses. Remember, Daniel Flores topping $3M was just 4 classes ago.
The high-end guys will usually have higher ceilings, sure. But they also are risky. Ian gave several examples on the last pod - Kevin Maitan for example. There's also the fact that this is not a market in which there is complete public information - way less so than even the draft. It's very possible the Red Sox just identify talent early and get those players to agree to deals for less, which makes it look like they're not spending as much for top guys. I would highly recommend listening to our podcast with Eddie Romero last year. He had some terrific stories about finding guys and doing things like getting them off the field so nobody else could see them. I think they did that with Darwinzon IIRC.

Updates to the MLB Pipeline tracker via Jesse Sanchez: Fraymi de Leon: $1.2M Freili Encarnacion: $1.1M Johanfran Garcia: $850K So accounting for de Leon, Encarnacion, Garcia, Santana, and Yuten, the Red Sox have spent $4,150,000. They have $1,029,700 for the rest of the class.

We are usually evenly split between Venezuela and the DR. 2021 D,V,D,V,V,V,D,D,D,V,V 2020 V,D,V,V,V,D,D,V,V,D 2019 D,D,D,D,V,D,V,V,V,D 2018 V,V,V,D,V,V,D,V,D,D So far, D,D,V,D,D,V 10 signings, between two, 2018-2020, and, 11, 2021...sooooo, I'll take a stab that they'll be 4-5 more signings, between the two! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Every year the Red Sox sign a Venezuelan pitcher for $12,533 who ends up a top 100 prospect and major leaguer and every year at least one person is like "WHY DIDN'T THEY SIGN THE #1 PROSPECT."

Not sure if covered already but the Athletic had some information on some of the other signings.
*Yosander Asencio: may be the best athlete of the group
*Willian Colmenares: could develop three big-league average pitches with command. The Red Sox “feel strongly” he could become a mid-rotation starter.
Edit: Looks like vermontsox1 had it covered with yesterday's Globe story.

"GREAT, HENRY CAN BUY ANOTHER YACHT!" I think you're being sarcastic here, but for anyone who might actually be thinking like this, again, they're going to spend the maximum that they can spend, so this is a very faulty way of thinking about it: 2020-21 (which became just Jan-Dec 2021): Had less than $100k remaining under the cap; couldn't trade for more pool space 2019-20: Went over initial cap; traded for more pool space as part of the Pillar deal literally to sign one more guy in October for $25k 2018-19: Went nearly $1M over initial cap; traded for more pool space for Lorenzo Cedrola then moved some of it with Swihart for Wilson 2017-18: Traded up to the maximum they could trade for, going more than $3m over initial cap and within $30k of their eventual cap. Remember, IFA has a hard cap, not a soft cap with penalties like the draft. And it's not like the draft where you get all of the guys you can sign at once and can budget down to the nearest dollar under the cap - there's wisdom to having some money to spend at the end of the signing period in case you find someone you can sign immediately who'll need more than $20k (under which the bonus doesn't count toward the cap). They didn't really need to do that last year, but the year before they signed Yordanny Monegro in Feb. 2020 for $50k and he was one of their better starters in the DSL last year (if a shade old at 18yo).

I am, however, looking forward to the IFA draft and the fans 2nd guessing the selection of 15yr they've never heard of before

Given the lack of information we have about the signees, and the fact that what little information we do have is usually through biased sources (the BA and other guys largely rely on team and “agent” (buscone) sources), I honestly just ignore IFA signings. Every little guy is athletic and might stick at shortstop and every big guy has bat speed and power potential. I have no basis for evaluating them so I just nod and move on.

I usually pick the dude with the best name and follow him until he proves me right or wrong. Not a great system, rarely works.

So where are the savings that add up to purchasing a yacht?

Maybe a good time to remind folks to use/to reinstitute italics as the official "sarcasm font"?

Please look up about 2 posts I saw the subsequent posts later. Yes, agreeing with Chris, when using sarcasm without context with which to reasonably interpret it as so, it may be appropriate to use italics.

Fun to note than even in a wholly speculative market of 16 year old DR/Venezuelan kids, everyone knows the discount rate on 16YO pitchers is about 70%. I believe there's only 2 on the top 50 board. Basically everyone ascribes to the "give the good ones $250K, give anyone throwing 85 MPH $75K and we'll sort it out in 6 years" approach.

That means, I saw it, after I had read and responded to your initial comment. Sorry, if I wasn't expansive in my reply.
