this sport is so stupid sometimes
If you are pitching your position player you deserve to have balls launched to the moon in any count with any score in any inning
How to lose a locker room 101 by Tony La Russa

LOL at the Tony La Russa revival turning out every bit as stupid as everyone knew it would be.
My thoughts beyond that would violate forum rules.

Honestly, did anybody anywhere think TLR was a good hire? I can’t think of a more unanimously criticized hiring since Bobby V

I can’t think of a more unanimously criticized hiring since Bobby V They got a mulligan with the DUI and the white sox were like no we hired the right guy. Now this moron is criticizing his own player for swinging 3-0 and the teams leader (Anderson) goes on social media to back his player. Game passed La Russa a longggggggggg time ago. Add, AJ Hinch who was prob the perfect guy for them was sitting right there for the hiring and they chose la russa

These stone age "unwritten rules" need to be purged from the game. It's gotten better over time, but every now and then asshats like La Russa inject it right back in. The garbage around Tatis's grand slam last season was another one that annoyed me.

I absolutely hate those who still follow the “unwritten rules” of baseball
This isn’t the 50’s. And mlb wonders why it has trouble getting young fans to stay fans of the sport.

Well this forces TLR to get even more questions about the situation, in particular if his comments gave the Twins implicit permission to throw at him. Looking forward to the response.

I don't really understand the anger over following the "unwritten rules."
The way I see it, if you're putting a position player in to pitch, you're basically rolling over and showing your belly. "We don't think we have a chance to come back and win this, let's just get through it and move on to the next day."
To me, the classy response to someone waving the white flag is to show appropriate restraint.

I mean, can the ChiSox retaliate for a guy throwing at a guy La Russa himself lit up? If players weren’t already pissed, this feels like TLR sent him up with a target.

Prepare to be shocked TLR says "I don't have a problem with how the Twins handled it," in regards to Duffey throwing at Yermin Mercedes. #WhiteSox dude is going to get thrown out and locked out of the clubhouse by the players at this rate

It's not like you can ask them to stop swinging, period. I would consider swinging there on the 3-0 pitch a minor faux paus, I guess. But TLR throwing his player under the bus to the media is wildly inappropriate.

How can white Sox ownership even let him manage another game at this Point?

Seattle Detroit game is pretty interesting
Add: Spencer turnbull with the fifth no hitter of the year (second vs the Mariners)
Add2: some kind of drastic rule change to improve hitting around the league is coming.

If you want to gently shake your head at a guy swinging 3-0 in a blowout, that’s fine with me. But the punishment is always to throw at a guy (sometimes a different guy than the one who broke the unwritten rules), which seems like a wildly disproportionate response.

My take is that if you’re throwing your position player you deserve to have some balls launched into orbit
Mercedes is a 28 year old rookie, he doesn’t have a ton of time to establish himself and get paid. GET THOSE STATS KING
TLR is an absolute buffoon. I’m almost mad for White Sox fans

The only thing I can say where TLR does have a point is if they're in a situation where the ChiSox are trailing by some runs late and need a baserunner and Mercedes swings at a 3-0 pitch (and makes an out), then he'd have the right to be pissed, as that would be insubordination.
Now, I get this was about the silly old adage of being too embarrassed to run up the score or whatever and that's a different situation, but I think what LaRussa took away from Mercedes not listening to him there was if there came a situation like the first one I described, where taking a walk matters, and Mercedes has already established that he isn't going to listen to him, I can see LaRussa's cause for concern.
But LaRussa trying to do it in this situation is silly. If Mercedes comes up with the ChiSox trailing 6-3 leading off the 9th and hacks at a 3-0 pitch after being given the take sign, then LaRussa has a right to air him out. But to try to pull rank in a blowout situation is tone deaf and a great way to lose the respect of your players, which he has apparently done. I know Bobby V alienated the Red Sox players within the first month of the season as they were already calling for him to be fired in April 2012.

Seattle Detroit game is pretty interesting Add: Spencer turnbull with the fifth no hitter of the year (second vs the Mariners) Add2: some kind of drastic rule change to improve hitting around the league is coming. I think that move the mound thing back might pick up traction. I think Theo Epstein mentioned how everybody is pretty much throwing the way Nolan Ryan and Sandy Koufax did, all 95 MPH plus. I also think Smoltz has a point about how eventually somebody is going to get hurt really badly or even killed as the pitches are coming up on the batters faster than ever (and with the emphasis on velocity, accuracy is being sacrificed and the chance for a wayward pitch to do serious damage is being greatly increased). So I think the idea is if they move the mound back a foot that will lower the velocity of the pitches coming in by 2 or 3 MPH or so which could decrease the strike outs. And perhaps they deaden the ball a bit so that going for home runs becomes less attractive and putting the ball into play more rewarding. Because I have to say, the baseball style of today is quite boring and one dimensional. I've been watching the game since the 1980s and have watched games from the 1970s and I have to say I like the style of the 1970s and 1980s the most. The 1990s were like slow pitch softball played by roided up guys. Pitchers had virtually no chance in the 1990s. Then in the first decade of the 21st century, value started to get placed on guys with lower BAs and higher OBPs and guys striking out at higher rates was no longer scoffed at. I think baseball had a bit better balance in the first half of the 2010s but in the latter half, this HR as all offense took off and here we are, especially with defensive shifts cutting into batting averages as well. I'd say this is the most boring style since the latter 1960s where only HRs scored runs as well, but there was less HRs so ERAs were around 3 rather than 4. Either way it doesn't work.

He seems determined to drag this out. I know he gets asked, but surely his answers could, you know, suck less?
