I'm a huge Corey Kluber fan so I'm going to be extra critical of Richards. This team needed a good opening series just to get a more positive narrative around this team and build a little excitement. Instead, they've been inept at hitting and sloppy on defense. The starting pitching looked good, but now Richards is having a rough first inning of the season. Ultimately, this series means very little, but not a great way to start the season when most pegged this as a loser club to start the year after an awful 2020. Whether you are a Kluber fan is irrelevant as he was NEVER coming to Boston (contract and coach were in NYY’s favor! I am a huge Mookie Betts fan, but that is irrelevant as he was never staying. Richards was signed to flip at the deadline (if he is not horrible like he was today)! I don't know, if you gave him a few million more, he wouldn't have come here? It felt like Richards was the Red Sox guy.

This game started an hour and 15 minutes ago, and the #9 hitter for the Red Sox finally got an at-bat.

Gameday is pretty generous describing those weak Dalbec and Verdugo fly balls as 'lineouts.'

Impressive showing for Whitlock so far. Nice to get that strikeout because as he's finding out this inning, generating groundballs with our infield defense seems to not get you outs.

It will be fun to watch Houck, Whitlock, and Seabold in the same rotation after the deadline.

Can we start a thread tracking our progress toward the 1/1 pick overall for next year yet? Putrid team is putrid.

Nice if the Sox had gotten Devers to play a little winter ball and only play 1b, or send him to instructional league this past fall and same thing, plus play 1b in ST. he couldn't be as bad there as he is at 3b. Many ppl are closing their eyes with him. When you wince at a ball going to a position on the field, it's time to do something about it. He's not going to get any better there. Should have already been sent to 1b, let their new wonder kid Dalbec play 3b, who from what have seen looks far better there. Stop massaging the ego of Devers, he can't handle the position and if the team is going to carry Arroyo on the roster? He might as well play, because after these 3 games, it's pretty obvious Hernandez isn't any real 2b want out there. Combine those 2 with Bogaerts, who bless him does his best with what he has and the infield is atrocious as is. Chavis (not saying do this) would be a much better improvement with the glove at either 2b/3b, that's how poor it's been all spring and so far this season. Who didn't see this coming that watched all their ST games??

It will be fun to watch Houck, Whitlock, and Seabold in the same rotation after the deadline. It's kind of like this team was set up to be good from July through September, with Sale presumably coming back and Duran hopefully rounding this ragged outfield into shape. Unfortunately half their games will have been played by then.

By the offense will agree. How West anointed himself opening day behind the plate? usual bad game there with missing many for both sides. instance is cost Eovaldi extra 11 pitches in 2nd inning blowing 3rd strike on what would have been 3rd out, then batter gets on. It screams robotics call balls and strikes with him, Angel Hernandez, Tim Timmonds. Another thing is Cora using his inner Don Zimmer and refusing to drop certain guys in the order due to the "name" and what they have done previously, not lately. I mean mostly JD Martinez, who had no business hitting 3rd, like he had none hitting 3-4 last season after the 1st 30g or so. This was where ex Sox skipper Joe morgan had the guts to forget what name was on the back of a jersey.. Stop massaging the egos of ballplayers. It's big enough already. CVaz should have probably been higher, JD Lower. This isn't a popularity contest. You were saying?

I’m one of the die hard optimists here.
A list of things you have no standing to complain about. I admit it’s a short list.
1) Tanner Houck 2) JDM. Dude is raking. 3) Garrett Whitlock. Rule Five = found money. 4) Renfroe looks good in RF.

I didn’t work for the Rays so this is probably naive, but the offseason acquisitions appear to suck.
Starting the year 3 back on the only team you *might* finish ahead of? Not ideal.

I get that you're the Chaim pessimist, but you must know how silly that statement reads after 3 games. I'm sure you'd have tempered everyone's excitement had these been 3 blowout wins in our favor.

I mean, it's not not a defense-first position, especially at Fenway. But yeah Renfroe/Cordero looks like it's going to become a true platoon real soon.

People say “it is only 3 games.” Well, I guess you assume a 3-game deficit won’t be the difference after 162. Personally, when I have a team already projected to struggle, I view spotting the nearest team to us in the division an immediate 3 game lead as not something to shrug off. And if we won by blowouts, I’d say great! Keep it up! But I’d say the same thing I’m saying as we lose: the Orioles are terrible.

Watching the O's broadcast and Jim Palmer is extremely impressed with Whitlock. I always enjoy Palmer’s analysis on pitchers, usually listen to the O’s broadcast when they’re playing the Sox. Whitlock’s fastball/changeup combo has been real impressive. Haven’t seen much of his slider, which was supposed to be his best pitch as a Yankees prospect, but if he starts to flash that too, watch out. Sawamura looks like he’s going to either strike you out or walk you, it’s like Workman’s last couple years all over again (with a split instead of curve). Hope he can have a season like Workman’s 2019 in him.
