Re: Fournier
Hollinger says, "Fournier made $17,500,000 last season but is unlikely to match that in this go-round; BORD$ pegs him at $12,500,000."

You have to look at it like that young big is our pick at 16.
The last 2 years we picked at 14. We got Romeo and the other kid so I don’t mind giving up the pick. But there not done. I can’t believe they were able to move him.
Ball is restricted free agent , I can’t believe New Orleans didn’t extend him. I read a story were there not happy down there.

Brad is building around Jaylen and Jayson. I love it.
It’s easy to forget that both of them were playing like all-NBA players and had the Celtics right around first place in the East (8-3) when Kemba came back and started forcing shots and the chemistry of the team got weird.

I might be the #1 proponent of getting Lonzo Ball (okay, that's a lie. UMASS is). But nevertheless. Hed be a great fit. No doubt.
But there really isnt a realistic path that gets him here. We still dont have cap room. Sign and trade? VERY hard for a team with Boston's cap situation bc you become hard capped.
That ship sailed once the trade deadline passed. May come back to port (I fear I'm taking the analogy too far) in 3-4 yrs but not now.

My expectation is that the only time we see Mo Brown in green is at the press conference. I feel as though he will be stapled to another piece that is moving out, maybe Smart. He doesn’t do enough things well or even adequately to play on a contending team. We see some blocked shots and think he is a great defender. He isn’t, he is bad defensively. Jumps at everything and gets out of position. No offensive game past 3 feet out. Can MAYBE give you some spot minutes against a team who doesn’t have a real center, but will get blown off the ball by a team with an average or better big.

Not sure if you can combine them but it would be fun watching Lonzo Ball on this team.

You can't combine a trade expection and a player You are correct, but you kind of can but the acquiring player needs to fit into the trade exception slot without the added salary. So Ball’s salary would need to be 11m or less. The Ball ship has sailed like Tex said. It’s basically impossible to add him.

You can't keep Thompson unless you want a massive tax bill. You are basically 8 million under the luxury tax right now. Maybe them saying that is so he opts out, so they don't have to trade him. At around 18 million you can resign Fournier, use the tax paying mid-level and fill out the roster with a small tax bill. That extra 10 million is huge when it comes to the tax, 5-10 million over versus 15-20 million over. You want to pay Thompson 10 million and then another 28.75 million in extra tax? Every five million basically 7.5, 8.75, 12.5, 16.25. I'm all for owners spending, yet I wouldn't want to go past the tax line by more than 10 million, that's still $16.25 million in taxes. One thing of note is that Jason Tatum did NOT make an All-NBA team. That will save the Celtics significant money over his contract.

Isn't the NBA hard cap basically 6 million over the luxury tax line?
The money makes it hard, yet not impossible. I'd argue the bigger issue is no 16th pick to offer. Like what do you give the Pelicans? I wouldn't say impossible, just highly unlikely.
I just laugh at talk of keeping Thompson for depth given the PG position. Yeah Ball is unlikely, so what do you do? The free agent market is crap in our price range unless you can get one player in Graham who is absolutely perfect. After him I'm literally looking at Dennis Smith Jr. And Frank Ntilikina types. I have zero interest in TJ McConnell types.
So either PG is going to be some huge question mark or Steven's pulls something off that seems unlikely.

It's one of those things he might be pissed about, yet it's likely better for him and the team.

Lots of info coming out about how much of a disaster Brad was last year and how he gave Marcus Smart preferential treatment. Wish I could say I’m surprised but…

Sad to see the Nets lose in the second round. So sad but the fact is they have their big 3 signed for the next 2 years and if they can stay healthy they will be a very tough out for a while, sadly. I used to look at Lebrons age and think the C's could win it all as he aged, now I look at the Nets and see the road block. One more reason to target 2022-23 as the year to plan for with next year being another growth year with the hopes that Nesmith becomes a stud and they can attract a star in the summer of 2022. Tatum and Brown will be in their primes and Tatum should be able to nullify KD by then between growth and age. The tide is also going to turn from the West being the best conference to the East being a beast! The C's should be right there though with the right moves and some luck. It is a little concerning to read about the dysfunction in the locker room, the Athletic today, as it seems like Smart is a problem with the J's which isn't surprising based on the rumors. Can Horford right that ship or is Smart a goner? I think he is a goner, maybe package him with TT for a good all around PG that would round out the roster, maybe they get lucky. I think they have enough assets to make that happen. Question is what kind of PG do they need if Tatum becomes a point forward? I would say someone with length and an all around good game, could it be Nesmith?

Why is anybody offering Brown in any trade proposition as a solution to the Celtic woes? He, due to his; contract, efficiency and overall talent is who you build around every bit a much as Tatum. I'd give away the first-round pick in a package with Walker to see what I could lure into the group via free agency as the second or third piece. I'm willing to trade one of Nasmith or Langford and double down on the other but think it's too early to cash in on either of them as either is likely to blossom with more opportunity, perhaps next season or not at all. The core as far as I'm concerned is the Jays and TL. Any other chip has to be on the table especially picks with the abundance of young players on the roster. You could defend trading him if you’re worried about his injuries being a long term thing. What would lend to one believing that to be true?

Reports saying we get the lowest of the Thunders 3 second round picks, they get the highest of our two 2nd round picks. That's the opposite of what I thought would happen.

I would say someone with length and an all around good game, could it be Nesmith? I get it with Smart, one way to get Ball is to use Smart. I would be very careful about doing that though. I see people call him a luxury or is he the tone setter for the style you want to play? What did you see out of Nesmith that makes you think he could be a PG? Langford would be the better choice given his skill set. Still I want the ball out of Tatum's hands. I want him playing like KD on the Nets with Harden. Harden acts as PG, picks right match ups and then gets guys the ball. If you want Tatum to act like LeBron being the best scorer and creator it's going to take years. Much easier to build this team another way, with PGs running an offense. Tatum and Brown are ready as scorers, they aren’t ready as creators. If I was the new Celtics coach I'm having the team watch the 2018 Celtics tape, then watch the 2020 Heat tape. That 2020 Heat team was one of the better ball movement offenses I've seen in recent memory. They always made the extra pass. Perfect example of good coaching making a team better than its pieces.

I agree on the PG being the facilitator if they can get the right guy, just seems like with the line up there should be a few guys with 4-5+ assists. Horford, Tatum, Brown, the more the ball moves the better. My thought on Nesmith was that they started him in that role once and they don't need ball dominant PG, unless they get the right one. What kind of sucks is that Smart seems like he could be that guy with the right coaching and discipline, yet he has not shown he can be that guy.

No surprises on the various news items leaking out...Stevens and Kemba, one or more players unhappy with Steven's apparent acceptance of Smart's often bonehead play. It was so evident injuries weren't the only issue in so many lackluster games and quarters

I was just reading that Dinwiddie opted out. He could be an interesting mid level option to back fill Kemba's spot, particularly if reports that Fournier could get a lot less and stay in BOS. Possibly more of a fit if they end up hiring the asst from Brooklyn. I don't fully understand the NBA cap, and it might be difficult to fit in, but another bigger guard would be nice to have, and someone that won't need huge minutes. Coming off injury, but what do people think?

The problem with Stevens is that he stopped evolving and trying to get better as a coach. He had a completely different roster the last few years, which was miles ahead in terms of talent, and he tried to force them to play the same way as those early teams with subpar talent. That’s what makes me skeptical of him in his new role, particularly when you combine it with the fact that he has no experience. But everyone loves making excuses for Stevens, so I’m sure no one will question him.

We can say they’ll definitely stay together but another year not winning who knows? As far as staying healthy, that’s not a guarantee. Kyrie hasn’t had a healthy year in a long enough period of time that it’s fair to ask if he can have one. Also, how long will they stay happy with one another? Who knows, KD just played 53 mins in a game that Kyrie sat out - could Kyrie have gutted it out and played a game 7? Is that on KDs mind? Things change quickly.

We can only offer a deal starting at $5.9 million, the tax paying mid-level. So I don't see how we have a chance. Yet if he wanted the right situation to rebuild his value. Yeah absolutely he would be a perfect target. I'd rank it as highly unlikely.
