I still fail to understand why we continue to hit people like Chavis, Santana and Kiké leadoff. Doesnât make sense to give the most ABâs to our worst hitters.

Yet one more mistake in fundamentals. We know it happens, but oof is about right.

My only explanation is the (Devil) Rays sold their souls. They are not impressive overall, AND they played sloppy… and yet they win. Jesus, it is frustrating. I think I hate them more than the Yankees. I said it.

Of course it had to end like this didn't it. Too many mistakes in this ugly game with no offense.

CVaz needs to block that. Agree. Also a bad throw on the stolen base right beforehand.

Team feels like it is in a dangerous place - slumping offense, no leadoff hitter, but worse - fundamentals issues (defense, baserunning). Cora needs to read them the riot act.

this is the kind of game you see in the minors. throwing the ball around, passed balls walks and errors. Oivetta was great, but that is about all. chavis swinging at pitches out of the zone all the time and other players doing the same. I think they should go to the plate with brooms instead of a bat.

Well they finally managed to beat themselves. They came close a few half dozen times.
Also the lead off hitter and JDM now slumping isn't helping.

Baseball gods are sending Cora a message. Your team isn't a first place team, not now. Go fix what needs fixing, maybe sit a few regulars who are making too many mental mistakes, regroup, and see if you can play your way back to being a disciplined team. Otherwise your looking at 4th place in 2 weeks.

This felt like a precursor to sending down Bobby D. Can’t pinch hit for him in a tie game if you have full faith in him. If you believe in him, you see him as getting you on the board with one swing.

Send the offenders down to the FCL and learn fundamentals again.

Disgusting but hardly unpredictable loss.
The team defense was horrible. The base running was horrible. They richly deserved this loss, except for Nick Pivetta who did everything he could to win this game.
There are too many damn easy outs in the lineup.
And the defense does a bad job of turning batted balls into outs and they can be error prone. Chavis' error put pressure on Pivetta and prevented him from going 7.
Vazquez made a poor/errant throw in the 9th. He made a base running blunder in the 7th after Renfroe didn't exactly hightail it for home like he should have.
And of course with two outs and nobody on in the 9th, they lose on a single, stolen base, error, and a wild pitch, and in the process they lose first place too.
Hate to say it, but this team has been playing sloppy baseball for awhile and the way they're going I wouldn't be shocked to see the Yankees return the favor to the Sox and sweep them at Fenway. At this point given the way the Sox are playing I'd be surprised to see the Sox take the series - they're playing that badly right now. Now they also have to worry about holding the Yankees off. NY is only 3.5 games behind them.
Man, what a crappy loss that game was.

This feels like more than one loss. We need to do damage in the first two games against the MFYs when we face German and Montgomery. The third game is Cole vs. E-Rod. Our only hope in that game is the reverse lock theory. Lose two out of three to the MFYs and this will feel like a real slide.

I kinda understand why theyâre trying to get Dalbec going but continually rolling Chavis, Kiké and Marwin out there in what seems like as much as possible makes little sense to me against our top competitors. None of those guys figure into our long-term plans.
I get that Arroyo is hurt, Kiké can play CF and no one else really can do that well but he should be hitting 9th and Marwin should be more of a pure bench guy and defensive replacement.
Whether we bring up Duran or make a trade, fixing that black hole at the leadoff spot really needs to happen.

Looking at the line up over the last 10 games or so - anyone hot?
Verdugo- 10 for 41, 1 HR 5 RBI Martinez - 12 for 44, 1 HR 5 RBI Bogaerts - 11 for 37, 2 HR 5 RBI Devers - 13 for 37, 3 HR 12 RBI Vazquez - 9 for 37, 1 HR, 2 RBI Renfroe - 10 for 36, 2 HR, 7 RBI Hernandez - 7 for 37, 1 HR, 5 RBI Dalbec - 10 for 36, 2 HR, 5 RBI
Surprised to see Dalbec with so many hits - what stands out is that no one is really hot (well, maybe Devers, somewhat) - and Kiké and Vaz are kind of cold - but really, the team is just showing some mediocre offense.
Someone needs to get on fire. Fast.

They don't draw walks but they do hand them out. Defensive issues, too. They're a flawed team that has played over their heads and now they're starting to come back down. They played a poor series against Toronto but managed the split. They struggled against Houston. They were very disappointing against KC. They blew this series in TB. They haven't really played that well in a while. They've managed to steal some games (fortunately more than they've given away like tonight) but all in all this team is in a fragile dangerous place where it feels like with one stretch of 8 losses in 10 games they could find themselves in 3rd place, out of a wild card spot, and about 5 games out. Not much room for error.

The good news is that Pivetta's spin rates look fine.
Barnes spin rates looked a little better tonight. Fastball was normal, curve was in the ballpark of some of his past games but on the low end of the range.

The leadoff situation isn't remotely funny anymore. There are 5 good hitters on this team, they need to be batting 1-5. Full stop. This lineup card is an embarrassment to Cora's skills as a manager. Yes. Was saying this since day one. Just move Verdugo to leadoff and move everyone else up a spot. I was never comfortable with the concept that Kikè was going to get more AB’s than Devers.

I like the fact that marcus wilson will take a walk and nobody in boston's lead off position will do that. i understand being aggressive at the plate, but there is a thing about being aggressive in the zone. I don't know how many times i have seen fastballs down the middle being taken for a 3rd strike. whatever happened to protecting the strike zone?
