Not that it matters that much, but why 122k instead of 125k?

Fully vetted the scouting reports, bios, & stat lines for all of the draftees, talked it over with the brass, did some social media stalking, and reviewed the discussion here. Changed some of my projections slightly. Again, this is all still largely speculation. Top Ten Rounds (entire amount counts towards bonus cap) Round, Overall Pick, Player, Projected Bonus1 Marcelo Mayer $7,250,000 2 Jud Fabian $2,300,000 3 Tyler McDonough $831,100 (slot) 4 Elmer Rodriguez $200,000 5 Nathan Hickey $410,100 (slot) 6 Daniel McElveny $250,000 7 Wyatt Olds $150,000 8 Hunter Dobbins $100,000 9 Tyler Miller $150,000 10 Matt Litwicki $47,500 After 10th round, above $125K (first $125,000 does not count towards bonus cap)11 Niko Kavadas $300,000 ($175k towards cap) 13 Zach Ehrhard $150,000 ($25k over cap) After 10th round, possible $125,000 or less signs (count $0 towards cap)12 Christopher Troye 14 Jacob Webb 16 BJ Vela 18 Phillip Sikes 19 Tyler Uberstine Total spent towards cap using these projections: $11,888,700 Red Sox Cap: $11,359,600 Red Sox Cap +5%: (no draft pick penalty): $11,927,580 Super wicked early projected not to sign15 Payton Green 17 Luis Guerrero 20 Josh Hood Minor updates

This is just my curiosity but does anyone know how the signing bonuses are taxed? Is it taxed based off where the team they signed with is? Or perhaps by where the player lives when they sign?

Excellent pick. The Rosenthal comps are legit. Fastball and injuries to a T.

Guessing here, suppose I accept a job in Florida. I go to Florida, declare residency, get paid. Then I am a Florida resident working in Florida and paid in Florida. I think Mayer will report to Florida Meant to quote ematz

Several million dollar difference which was why I'm a bit curious how it works.

I moved to Florida 5 years ago from Virginia. The state tax savings alone paid for half my condo in St Petersburg. Sweet

That's funny because I would have said the opposite: in the aggregate be conservative and don't expect Red Sox drafted players to repeatedly outplay their draft slot, but it's ok to fall in love with the occasional player based on scouting (or honestly whatever - I know everyone here is rooting for Owen Sharts). Just don't do it too much compared to average. I usually cotton onto a few random guys for one reason or another. My guys this year are Hickey, Miller, Webb, Guerrero, and Hood. Hope they sign the last two... I wonder if Chaim could recruit former players to go surprise these kids in person and convince them to sign.. How would Guerrero possibly turn Pedro down or Hood say no to Pedroia?
Any word on Hickey's likelihood of signing? He technically was only a freshman this past season.

I think Mayer will report to Florida Meant to quote ematz This is my best guess as well, but it's going to depends on which state he declares residency. Logically we'd suspect that he'd declare in Florida to avoid the income taxes, and I'm sure the teams all have tax advisors that tell these players exactly what to do. Additionally, not sure how MLB structures the signing bonuses (i.e. guaranteed on day 1, day 365, etc.) but if there's any vesting requirement going on in the agreement it might not be taxable income in 2021. I hadn't thought about this before, but I hope minor leaguers don't have to file in all the states they play in like the pros do. They already make nothing, imagine having to file 15 different state tax forms on top of that? If so, I hope the teams cover those CPA costs.

What a coincidence. I just thought Ft Myers was the right place for Mayer, and this decision was made completely independent of any tax considerations. Fairly sure Paul Toboni said in media availability that he expected Mayer to start in Fort Meyers. Though I think most guys will pass through there to start, if only just to get familiar with their program.

Turns out google has a better answer, at least if we're to believe these advisors. I'd greatly appreciate a second opinion though. To my speculation above, it seems like there's a clause in the contracts that state that a bonus can be recouped and as a result it's not considered a true "signing bonus". As such, it gets apportioned to wages and taxed based on the states in which they play games. awmcap.com/blog/how-your-mlb-signing-bonus-is-taxedanderscpa.com/taxation-of-major-league-baseball-signing-bonuses/?tag=saeInterestingly, having players stay in Florida and structuring the money to be paid more up front would I think thus allow the player to only have to file Florida taxes and get the 0%.
