After watching and reading interviews of Mayer and reading reports about his personality and character, I am betting that he easily and eagerly accepted slot to allow the team to have more flexibility about signing his future teammates. That seems to be the kind of unselfish leader that he is. Let's relax on anointing the kid before the ink is dry on his contract. I'm sure he's a good dude. Let's not start the hall of fame speech already. Aren't you the dull one, eh?

If the kid left money on the table 4 years or so away from the bigs so essentially the team could give more money to an unknown draft pick then his agent should be fired on the spot and have his professional license taken away.

Mayer gets $164k more than Davis took to be 1-1. But Mayer was insisting on slot value at each pick, so that was $8.4M+ for PIT. In other words, they saved almost $2m by taking Davis instead of Mayer. They also picked more than one kid who was considered a tough sign afterwards... I hope they're happy, b/c I sure am.

The Pittsburgh thing is getting old. They seem to use their competitive balance picks to just hoard prospects and make bad trades with the Rays and Yankees. They’ve been relevant like once or twice in the last twenty five years. Pittsburgh isn’t Scranton, they’re just a cheap team free riding off revenue sharing.

He signed for slot because his alternative was to go to college, risking injury or poor performance in the three years until being eligible for the draft again and then needing to still be a top four or five pick in 2024 to get a similar payday.
Also, many expect the new CBA to include an international draft, which could mean a much larger pool of players to beat out for that top four or five pick. He made the right decision, not least because he signed with a big-market team that is always trying to build a contender.

If it’s tough being a pirates fan, it’s even tougher being a pirates draftee, more so the high picks Then again, Sox fans are known to be very forgiving in prospect development pains

Yeah I went to Spring Training one year and met some Pirates fans, felt pretty bad for them. One college roommate was a yanks fan. One was a pirates fan. I’m pretty sure he didn’t see them make the playoffs until he was a junior in college Looking at it from that point of view was insane. He endures years- decades even-of Pat Meares and Craig Wilson being one of their best players and is rewarded with a mediocre playoff appearance They did rattle cueto though and that was fun to watch him enjoy. He at least got something

Is it just me or does the draft signing period seem much more exciting this year? Maybe it's #4 pick IDK.
I thought there was a really good chance Mayer signed for slot, and I stated as much while eternally admitting to myself I was probably being a huge homer and thinking wishfully; and yet here we are.
If Mike Andrew's projections play out with what's left the Sox have an extra $927,280 to play with, which means the max they could give Fabian is $2.78 million If he signs for the projected of $2.450 million the Sox have an extra $593K to play with.
I don't think $725,000 will be enough to sign Green, but maybe? still from what I gather it would take 1st round money not 3rd round money. It feels more likely that Guerrero and Hood are the consolation prizes if Fabian signs. However, what if Fabian signs for closer to 2 million? and/or Hickey goes for closer to slot then Green is in play because the Sox might be able to give him a number north of a million. I wouldn't say it's "more probable than not" but I will say that the chances of signing Green have increased over the last 24 hours.

He at least got something I started watching baseball as a kid in 1980 so I missed the "We are Family Pirates" 1979 Championship team. The Pirates won 3 championships in 20 years, all 7 game victories, 1960 against NYY on Bill Mazeroski's walk-off HR, 1971 Game 7 victory over Baltimore where Clemente shined and Steve Blass pitched a masterpiece before developing Steve Blass disease (if you're not sure what that looks like, see Brooks Kriske, circa 7/22/21), and that comeback victory in 79 lead by Stargell and Dave Parker. It was a rich legacy and then in the Jim Leyland era where Barry Bonds and Bobby Bonilla were the stars the Pirates won 3 division titles from 1990 - 1992 but that team's watershed moment was when they were 1 out away from going to the World Series, but Francisco Cabrera's PH 2 run single thwarted them. Then Bonds left via free agency and the franchise disintegrated. They did rally in the 2012-2014 as a Andrew McCutchen led Wild Card team, but they never went far. They were usually one and done. It's a shame. It was a vibrant baseball city. Now it's like they're the St. Louis Browns of the 21st century.

The international draft would be a separate draft, at least at first. If they ever do combine into one, NHL-style world draft, we're 2 or even 3 CBAs from that at least, if not more.

An international draft would be bad for the Sox, no? Seems like the Sox are doing well in the current IFA system.

You’d think the redsox would have made ceremonial souvenir “Redsox 2021 Draft” logo pens for the signing, and use letterhead paper?

Maybe a team background that didn’t look like a warehouse break area. After all this a big moment for these players and it may the be among the biggest for some.
