Ah yes, the U.S. Senate to MLB pipeline.
Btw, MassLive reports Houck indeed will start vs the MFYs on Thursday!

Should be Richards and then Houck against the MFYs, no? Given that they MFYs are all righties? Toronto is just as right-handed, which is why getting him up in time for this stretch that included two series each against the NYY and TOR made a ton of sense. Agree with others - this just means that Houck either piggybacks or is available late. He probably gets a start on the back-end of this stretch if they don't have any more rainouts, but if they do, then he's there in the bullpen if needed again. Or else Houck and Richards are about to swap seats.

I wonder if we see
Santana (R) Hernandez (R) Renfroe (R) Devers Bogaerts (R) Chavis (R) Dalbec (R) Vazquez (R) Martinez (R)
vs. Robbie Ray tonight

As pointed out by Lou Merloni yesterday, until the rainout at least, it was noteworthy that Sale is lined up with Richards' spot in the rotation.

Enough time has gone by that the innings limitations on Houck are no longer a consideration. I believe Houck is a significantly better pitcher than Richards and I am hoping that difference will be obvious to the decision makers.

Rays walk off win. They were down one, down to their final strike with the bases loaded and 2 outs.
This is going to be a tough race for the division.

is there any rescuing Bobby. Given it was short sample size but from the last month last year to what has gone on this year, seems likely more than just there being a book out on how to pitch him. His walk rate where he was always good in the minors has completely disappeared. His home run total is not where we thought, and the swing and miss on in zone stuff is outrageously high. Yet his % of hard hit and barrels is top 20% ish. Is this disconnect just that he is swinging and missing at such alarming rates that it negates his barrelled ball %, or is there still the belief that he has been unlucky. AS a big Bobby guy, I have watched almost all of his at bats, and unfortunately to me, very little of what I am watching feels unlucky.

As I alluded to, I think the plan is for Sale to take his spot. I very much like Houck in this sort of hybrid role. We'll see how it works out though.

Agree but, if Houck pitches well enough, it won't be him that's moving when Sale returns. Think Wally Pip.

So they would go with a six man rotation for the final two months? I’m not sure I love that idea given we would essentially have a 1, 2, 3, 4 and two 5 starters:
Sale Eovaldi ERod Pivetta Perez Richards
Maybe it’s a hedge against injury, with no real solid guy in AAA and Houck seemingly destined for the pen, but the margin for error is small at the top of the division right now.

This may be blasphemous, but is it necessarily a given that Richards gets removed from the rotation when Sale is ready? Maybe it should be Perez. Richards, as we all know can't make it an inning (the leadoff hitter?) before getting into trouble, but give him 5 or 6 innings and somehow someway he usually makes it through with 3 or 4 runs given up.
But with Perez, more and more often lately he is gone by the 4th inning. He couldn't even get through the minor league lineup the Yankees put out last weekend. And with Perez, it's not necessarily a given that he struggles right off the bat.
Maybe Perez, who I think would make a better reliever, should be the guy who goes to the bullpen and becomes a long man, instead of Richards? Of course, now that I said this, the Jays will score 10 runs in the first inning....

Duran is .321/.410/.554 vs LHP this year in 62 PAs. Granted, AAA lefties are not Robbie Ray, but you gotta let the kid loose until he proves he can't handle it (and I don't care if he hasn't even tasted that cup of coffee yet, I more than sure he'll be better than Santana in this spot).

I'm wondering if they might trade him at the deadline to stay under the cap. I don't really see the need for 3 long guys in the pen. And he's just plain bad in his first inning.

I keep wanting them to give Wilson a cup of coffee or trade him. Maybe he could fetch some sort of outfielder who can at least be average so Verdugo can heal up if they just don't see him being able to hack it in the majors at all. Also they could just use Chavis at 2nd and play Hernandez in OF. Guess time will tell. Verdugo playing through injury >>>>>> Chavis You think Chavis works those walks last night? Hell no. I have no desire to see him again I disagree! I wish to see Chavis (lol .... on another team)!

If he’s gonna stick, he’ll be facing high quality lefties. Or would you have Santana bat for him against Chapman in the 9th, too?

I don’t care what any of you say. IMO Richards was signed to a 85 to 87 win team to flip for prospects. The option year was there to bring a higher return, and besides when Chris Sale comes back he would not be needed.
