Looking more and more to me like Downs has figured something out and is turning a corner in his development. He is at least out of the bad rut he was in. Very exciting as I was getting concerned about him. To me it increasingly makes sense why they sent Downs to the AFL. I honestly would not be shocked at all if we see him in Boston for at least a cup of coffee by mid season next year (if he can continue to show his last month or two is legit and closer to the player he is actually going to be which is a solid infielder at the MLB level. Probably not a star but a useful player)

I'd prefer Down had a better average/gap stroke, than selling out for a bit more power. That's without seeing him in person.

If this is a better reflection of the kind of hitter Downs can be, that would be huge, and would be the perfect bridge to Yorke arriving and Kiké leaving. Assuming he can play a decent CF, next year he plays 2B, then moves to CF replacing Kiké in 2023 and having Yorke at 2B. Has he ever played OF?

I caught the AFL game last night in Scottsdale. Only Kole Cottam played (DH). He was leaner and a much better runner than I expected. Kole ran very hard after he made contact. Very quiet, upright stance. Compact swing with good bat speed.
Scottsdale Scorpions lost 8-1. I had to leave in the 7th innning. Not sure if Kole had a hit or if a Boston pitcher got into the game (I was helping to watch my energetic 7-year-old grandson).

Solid line from Seabold, who started today's game for Scottsdale: 4IP, 4H, 1ER, 0BB, 4K.

Casas, Cottam, Koss in the lineup. What I have not learned in about 10 minutes of watching this: what the score is, what inning it is, who the road team is, who the home team is.
What I have learned: the AFL appears to average about 7 seconds between pitches.
ADD: Three-run homer! By... somebody! Who plays on one of the teams!
ADD2: Nice oppo-field single by a guy who might be named "Joey Weemer." This game seems to be on pace to last about 50 minutes.
ADD3: Ooh, Weemer thrown out trying to go first to third on a single up the middle. And the crowd goes mild.
ADD4: "Appler Uribe" (?) in to pitch. For one of the two teams.
ADD5: Uribe is a slow worker, often taking upwards of 10 seconds between pitches.
ADD6: Ooh, Triston Casas up to bat. I know this one! Let's see what he does with runners on 1st and 2nd...
Add7: Dang, struck out. Followed in the order by "Bunder Zit," who gets an RBI single. (I'm not totally 100% on these names; it's the best I can make out from the stadium announcer.)
ADD8: Uribe strikes out the side to get out of further trouble. "Ryan Ball-Plank" grounds out 6-3 to start the... whichever inning.
Think I'll call it quits here. Say what you will, though, this is definitely more entertaining than a Braves-Astros World Series!

AFL has a 17-second pitch clock from the time that the pitcher receives the ball back from the catcher or umpire.

Downs 1/4 with 2 BB & 2K. He's now batting .321/1.370 with 4SB & 2CS. Casas 1/3 with 3 BB. He's now batting .293/.810.

Kole Cottam went off today: 4-5, 2 HRs, walk off single.
Meanwhile, Jeter Downs seems like he's hit a little bit of a rough patch since his homer streak.

Kole Cottam, C, Red Sox — Boston's fourth-round pick out of Kentucky in 2018 looked like he was having a career year following the lost 2020 season. Between High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland, the 24-year-old slashed .278/.371/.500 and slammed a career-best 10 homers (he entered the year with just 11 to his name). His season didn't begin until July 29, however, so he's using the Arizona Fall League to make up for lost time. He's played three seasons in the minors, but on Tuesday he achieved a pair of career-bests when he collected his first four-hit game and first multi-homer game in Scottsdale's walk-off win over Salt River. Even better? Cottam's last hit—a 10th-inning single—brought home the game-winning run. Baseball America comment on Cottam

Unusual name in the Scorpion's box, the Indians Casetta-Stubbs. His first name is Damon.
Casas and Koss with 1 hit each.
Spiraling down wouldn't describe Downs. Nosedive comes to mind.

Seabold with iffy control.
Oddsmakers now have Downs at an even 50/50 for another hit. This year.

Idk why he’d think it’s intentional, did he do something stupid to “deserve” it?
Winckowski does have pretty good command tho….

Realistically, it was near his head. Intentional or not, I'd probably charge the mound too.
I wonder what provisions the AFL has for punishments.
