Arizona Fall League is officially back this year, unless COVID gets bad again and it isn't. www.baseballamerica.com/stories/2021-arizona-fall-league-slated-for-mid-october-return/Haven't thought much about it, but potential Sox reps off the top of my head: Cottam or Groshans or Baldwin or Hernandez - bunch of catchers to choose from Hudson Potts Jeter Downs Durbin Feltman Alex Scherff Pedro Castellanos? I'm lost on what SP they would send rather than have them just shut it down. I see the arguments for and against Groome (did I discuss that here, the podcast, or on Twitter recently?). I go back and forth on Casas - given something of a whirlwind year including international travel, I could see them having him just shut it down.

What about Bello? Or the other two pitchers that are profiled this morning (Adames and Kelly). Could you comment a bit about the criteria that are typically applied in choosing players for the AFL? Thanks.

Each team is sending 7 guys. It's usually something like a catcher, a SP, 2 or 3 hitters (at least one IF and one OF) and 2 or 3 RP. But not always - they didn't send a C in 2019
It's typically things like guys who need work because they missed time with injuries (Potts was the easiest guy to put on the list), Rule 5 guys you want one last look at (or want other teams to get one last look at), guys you want to work on a new position, or just generally guys you want to get more work. It admittedly becomes something of a feel thing. Think "best upper-minors prospects who they won't just want to shut down after a good, full season, with a particular trend for guys who need to make up missed time due to injury."
Also, forgot a really easy one for the SP - Connor Seabold. He'll need the innings.
EDIT: You know what I could see on Bello? Him going and pitching in relief like they did with Mata in 2019. Maybe Groome as well.
EDIT2: Thinking further, Eduard Bazardo seems a candidate too.

Regarding Bello, is he eligible or does he need to play in the Dominican Winter League?

Regarding Bello, is he eligible or does he need to play in the Dominican Winter League? I think they got rid of that rule - see Venezuelans Mata and Jhonathan Diaz, and Dominican Yoan Aybar, pitching in the AFL in 2019. But good point. (Background: Mike is referring to a rule that at least used to be in effect that if you were from a country with a winter league, you couldn't play in the AFL. As a result the AFL tended to be Americans and a handful of Cubans.)

Sox player development folks will obviously know a lot more, but I think I'd let Bello rest this offseason. He didn't pitch last year and he's thrown a good amount of innings so far. I'm not a pitching mechanics guy, but I'm concerned with his velo and his build. Maybe it's Mata melancholy and overly concerned? He's just under halfway to his 2019 IP total, so maybe he's ok. I just get worried about overdoing it for these younger kids.

Too soon? www.baseballamerica.com/stories/2021-arizona-fall-league-slated-for-mid-october-return/Looking back at the 2019 contingent, it looked like a pretty solid group at the time: Yoan Aybar, Tanner Houck, Bryan Mata, C.J. Chatham, Jarren Duran, Marcus Wilson, and Jhonathan Diaz. My throw-it-against-the-wall guesses/wishes for 2021: Casas Crawford Feltman Granberg Groome Hernandez Murphy Would the Sox actually send Groome? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ He figures to have about 85 IP by the end of the season. Maybe they’d use him as a reliever to work on a specific thing or two? Two years is a lot of lost development time. Same goes for Casas. If the plan is for him to reach Worcester next year, the AFL seems like a logical next step, especially after his success at the Olympics. Now that I look at it, Crawford and Feltman are more likely an either/or? Granberg is my wishlist guy, as I have a soft spot for the Morgan Burkhart/Daniel Nava types. Or, just for fun, they could send Christian Koss (Aybar) and Victor Santos (Chatham), the two guys they got back for the four guys from 2019 who are no longer in the org. Come to think of it, Santos would be an interesting guy to send in place of either Crawford or Feltman.

Search has been very wonky on proboards. Not your fault and no biggie. Protip: When linking to a month-old article, just poke around the threads from when the article came out.

Hearing these may get announced soon and confirmed that players on the 40-man can't go (which means no Seabold, R. Hernandez, Potts, and Rosario, who all would've been in consideration for me, nor Groome, who wouldn't have been but just putting him out there for the record). So, my projection:
Casas (as obvious a name as there's been, honestly - stud who needs the ABs) Fitzgerald Cottam (might've thrown Pereda in here too, but he'll play in VZ this winter, so I lean Cottam instead) Maybe a Cannon type? Castellanos might be an option too but similarly, if he's going to play in VZ, less necessary.
Santos or Walter Feltman Wallace German
And I really, really had to push back on myself wanting to add Yorke. I don't think it'd be crazy, but I also just think, especially given his back issue, they might want to just let him get into the offseason.

He missed time in July with a back issue. Any details other than back issue ? It was something like lower back soreness or stiffness. Nothing chronic and obviously it's not preventing him from excelling at this point, but I could also see them wanting to just get him down at this point rather than another few weeks in the AFL, depending on whether or not that's still bugging him.

I think they send the following: Cassas Ockimey Santos De la Guerra Bastardo Hernandez Adames I won't quibble with the names (I think at most two of those go), but presuming you mean Bazardo and not FCL pitcher Angel Bastardo, and that Hernandez is Ronaldo, neither can go - players on the 40 can't be assigned to the AFL. But yeah, from that list, Casas and Santos strike me as the only ones who are even possibilities.

Looking at who the Cardinals sent (Hicks, Nootbaar), looks like 40-man guys are eligible this year
