Barnes has the velocity, and the snap on the curve. His location is still a bit off. But - something to build on.
In fact, this game is (as we've said often this year) something to build on! MFY seems to be burying Oakland at the moment.

We are tweeners I guess. I'm 44 and my wife is 43. If the Sox make the playoffs we should meet up and catch a game at the brewery. Sounds great! There sure are no shortage of options around here. That's for sure, I've been meaning to check out the Sierra Nevada one for a bit now. I've been to many of the others, even one obscure one out your way (Sideways) that had hard Kombucha this summer. There's a Wicked Weed Taproom about ten minutes from the house in Enka. This area is like your liver's nightmares.

Well we know how Sale can perform against teams from the Tomato Can Division (apologies to CHB). Anxious to see how he does against Major League teams. Let's keep rolling.

Also D9 and Oklawaha in downtown Hendersonville - and then there is the Blue Door Bottle Shop, with hundreds of options....so yes, wow!!!! We've been to Sierra Nevada a few times - food is as good as the beer there!

Played their best game in awhile, and that’s even before they blew the doors off the game. Clean in the field, no mental lapses, some timely hits. Just all around good stuff. Sweep the next series- easier said than done but doable- and all of a sudden it’s a relatively successful stretch

With Bobby D I feel like I’m always waiting for him to disappear again, but he’s slowly winning me over on my long term outlook for him.
He doesn’t have to be a perennial all-star, and that’s ok. But I’m starting to think he could be good enough if the defense can progress a little more.
If he keeps up what he’s doing (and more slumps will come but perhaps they won’t be as long) it’s a pretty darn good look sticking with him.

Bobby could easily ride an OPS hot streak right past JDM at this rate. JD’s OPS is headed for Davey Jones Locker at the bottom of the ocean. Cora should drop him in the batting order.

What a night for Dalbec. A career night. Sale was dominant until he started to run out if gas in the 5th. Whitlock did get the 2 big outs but it's a shame he gets wasted in a 12-2 game. I know he wasn't available yesterday but if he had been the Sox would have swept the series. When Whitlock entered the game the Red Sox were leading 4-2 with two runners on. That is why he got the hold.

should re-signing Kiké be one of our priorities in the offseason? He's signed through next year...
EDIT:
Possible free agents at the end of the season are: E-Rod Vazquez (club option... they'll pick it up and probably extend him another year)
Schwarber (mutual option... he'll be a FA) Santana Richards (club option... maybe they bring him back on a cheaper contract like they did with Perez?) Perez (club option... he gone) Shaw Ottavino Robles Martinez (player option... seemed like a no-brainer that he'd opt out but maybe not if he doesn't get a hit the rest of the season)
No team is paying JD more than $19.35 million. He will be on the Red Sox next year unless they trade him (not happening).

Watching Simmons field the hell out of SS makes me feel a twinge of anxiety about the idea of Bogaerts there long term. By long term I assume you mean next year? Seriously I love the guy but Ian and Chris were talking about his lack of range on the new podcast. The Sox have got to lead MLB in infield hits allowed. It's a real problem already. I sincerely hate to say it but, from a completely bloodless dispassionate perspective, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense that Bogaerts would be in Boston past 2022. I don't think any team will sign him to be a long-term shortstop at that point, but some team that could play him at 3B or even 1B would probably be willing to. But 3B is occupied in Boston and between Dalbec, Casas, maybe even Schwarber, and of course Niko Kavadas, 1B is not exactly their clearest position of need. (All four of those guys are question marks for different reasons, but the odds are decent that one of them is also an answer.) He'll be 30 going into 2023 and I just don't see Bloom shelling out a big contract to a 30-year-old without a position.
But - side note - I just noticed that Bogaerts has had a higher wOBA than xwOBA every season of his career, and by a fair amount, about .036. Is that a Fenway effect, or something about his general profile? If it's Fenway then maybe he has more value for the Red Sox than other teams.

Meanwhile, some of you may feel torn but I am unambivalently gleeful that the Yankees have given away the entirety of their 6-run lead in Oakland. Guess I won't be awake to see how it ends, but either way there will be good news for us.

I was just on my instagram and seen MLB posts a video Yankees win 12 in a row….who “likes” it….Bryan Mata. Trade him asap! I’m done with him. No coming back from that!

I suspect it's a bat-control, hit-em-where-they-ain't skill. I have a note to do a study of hpw predictive xwOBA - wOBA is for hitters.

My scouting report on Barnes:
Curve quote promising. Had good bite and OK command. It looked like his curve on an average night.
Fastball: non-existent command, but it's weirdly promising that he almost always missed to the glove side. That suggests a fixable flaw in the release. He's hanging on to the ball too long, which suggests he's lost his feel for the pitch.
Psyche: at the point in the inning where he obviously still needed to work on the FB, he went to the curve to put up a scoreless frame. He seemed to like that. Staying away from the FB at the end suggests he realized he had a consistent problem that needs to be worked on in a side session.
BTW, after the first game of this series, Robles passed Barnes in season WPA (for the Sox only). That lasted a game, of course.

Meh he was red hot not that long ago. I think this is the popular new fad and it will be over during his next hot streak Somebody recently broke down his season and he’s been alternating between fire and ice all year. He’s definitely not cooked but he’s not the same consistent force he was a couple of years ago Like he is worth 2.5 WAR and he has a 126 OPS+. Let’s not kid ourselves here because of a cold stretch

Schwarber could be a great fit on this team past this season. If Bobby Dalbec turns back into a pumpkin I don't think the Sox would be afraid to give him a 1B glove. If Renfroe takes a step back or Duran doesn't take a step forward he can start or provide depth in the outfield. If JDM leaves he can DH. I like Schwarber.

Meh he was red hot not that long ago. I think this is the popular new fad and it will be over during his next hot streak He hasn't been really hot since April. Otherwise he's been mostly okay - but just okay - until the last 10 days or so, which is certainly a slump and he won't continue to be this bad. But I'm not sure if he can maintain an elite level of hitting over a full season again.
Since May 7th...
JD Martinez: .257/.315/.454, 103 wRC+ Bobby Dalbec: .257/.308/.515, 116 wRC+

Since July 30th:
Schwarber: .400/.571/.633, 227 wRC+ Dalbec: .333/.406/.737, 199 Rizzo: .204/.318/.389, 97
What a disaster it would have been if the front office hadn't given up on this team at the trade deadline.
