Nestor Cortes pitched 8 one-run innings last night to drop his ERA and WHIP to 1.70 and 0.85, respectively. Probably one of the front-runners for the CY thus far.
Somehow, he didn't make Eric Longenhagen's 2017 top 33 MFY prospects list or Kiley McDaniel's 2018 top 27 MFY prospects list, despite good results in A and AA as a 21 and 22 yo. He didn't even make either of their "other prospects of note" sections at the bottom, which included 34 players 2017 and 38 in 2018. Justus Sheffield was #8 on the 2017 list and #3 on the 2018 list.
Even big league team scouts and coaches haven't known what to make of Cortes. The MFYs exposed him to the 2017-18 Rule 5 draft and BAL picked him; he struggled in 4 appearances and they returned him to the MFYs two weeks into the '18 season. After an unimpressive 2019 in the Bronx, the MFYs traded him to SEA, who cut him after a poor showing in the truncated 2020 season. The MFYs gave him another shot in January 2021 and he hasn't looked back since. Over that time, he spent four straight winters playing for Estrellas in the Domnican league.
