You don't do just one. You do one to get the other. The players don't agree to a cap without a floor and the owners don't agree to a floor without a cap would be my general expectation, am I off on that?

The economics of baseball is going to make that tough. Local revenue (ticket sales, local sports network revenue) is a much larger proportion of revenue (with national revenue from nationally-televised games) being a smaller proportion, and there’s no robust system of revenue sharing. Maybe it’ll happen in our lifetimes but I wouldn’t count on it.

He was already signed for 1/18, so it's 5/90 for his age 37-41 seasons
Wouldn't want that one on the books

I think Preller must be a big climate change believer, because some of the long-term contracts he's handed out in the last few years scream someone who thinks San Diego will be underwater by 2027 anyway

He's taking the Mike Ilitch playbook. Can't take your money with you when it's all said and done.

It's perhaps not a killer but jeez I wouldn't want to be betting on darvish for his age 38-41 seasons.

The Padres very clearly are paying guys for way longer than they should to keep AAV down. Will eventually bite them in the rear but we'll see how it plays out.

In 5 years the Padres might surpass the US Government in payments to retirees.

Lol Maybe SD can start printing money too…..

Maybe the Padres can win their first ever World Series. They started spending big money about the time the Chargers moved to LA, so maybe SD is afraid of losing the Padres too, or maybe they just got tired of being the Dodgers patsy. Either way, I am glad not to be an SD fan even though I currently live in the SD area. The Red Sox visit SD in May, and I will be there, and I hope they sweep SD!

I believe I saw a tweet that said the Padres owner is a twice survivor of cancer and the spending started after the second time.

…makes sense that he wants to win before he passes…. Don’t we all! Meanwhile, here in Red Sox Nation, if you're 25 years old and the Red Sox don't win the World Series this year or next, it will be the longest championship drought of your life...

That's his three arb years + 2 free agent years. He was going to get 3 or 3.5 million in arb this year, so prob looking at like $18 million for the three arb years. So they're paying something like 2/46 for his free agent years. Not much of a bargain IMO.

I think the bargain is only having to buy two FA years, rather than five +.

A perspective that all the fogeys on here seem to lose sight of when a season like 2022 goes pear-shaped... I assume you are kidding, but in case you are not: As one of the fogeys on here, I very much want to win each year (games, trades, drafts, WS, whatever). Well over a half century of losing will cause that. But all that losing also brings pride and gratitude for all that winning of the past 20 years. The winning decades and the losing decades inform and enhance my love of the game I used to play, of the team I have followed since the 40’s (I am an unapologetic homer), its players (almost all of them), the cathedral called Fenway Park, committed and successful owners, the rare fair writer and talking head. I use and understand numbers in business and baseball and know that, if applied improperly, they lie. Having raised a bunch of kids and coached them and taken THEIR kids to ball games, I understand the impatience, the anger, the rage of those 25 year olds who have only experienced 4 WS in their lifetimes. Just kidding. I was a pretty intense and angry 25 year old as the Sox almost followed the Braves to greener ($$$) pastures. Same anger, different reasons. Whatever. It’s a game. I think parents should be banned from kids baseball games; MLB should have a cap and a floor; and that the Sox will do better in 2023 with a strong run to the postseason. Fogeys are allowed to say that without fear of retribution.

Andrew Chafin signed w 1 year 5.5 million dollar deal with the Dbacks, his original team. Arizona holds an option for a 2nd year that would pay Chafin 7.25 million.
As much as I like Bleier I wouldnt have minded the Sox signing Chafin as the primary lefty and relegating Bleier to a secondary lefty role.
Will Smith and Matt Moore remain unsigned. Woukd really like to see if the Sox can get a good deal on Smith.
Also, Alex Reyes, the former Cardinals closer who was injured in 2022, signed with the Dodgers for 1.1 million and a team option for 3 million. Have a feeling he'll be one of those guys who clicks with the Dodgers.
And the Dodgers have also reunited with Rubby De La Rosa, whom I mistakenly thought would be the one guy who'd turn into something when the Dodgers traded five guys to the Sox during their bailout of the Red Sox.
And the A's trade AJ Puk to the Marlins for JJ Bleday. I think Miami gets the best of that one. Puk should be a solid lefty out of the pen. I don't think Bleday will for enough average to be playable, and going from Miami to Oakland won't help.
