“I was thinking about the bunting, but coach Kuriyama told us, ‘Just to do what you can.’ I made my mind, and so when I hit the ball, I was hoping it was going to go into the stands, but I guess I didn't have enough power to hit the ball out of the stadium. I know that [pinch-runner Ukyo Shuto] was a really fast runner, so I figured we would win.” 10.28 seconds first-to-home. I'd love to see the Sox be as aggressive in pursuing Murakami if/when he's posted as they were with Yoshida. If Murakami stays healthy and in Japan he could be a potential threat to Saduharo Oh's HR record of 868. Of course in America, the numbers would be nowhere near as extreme, but that guy could certainly be a middle of the order masher. I know power hitters on Japan often dont translate well in the states, but I Would love to see him driving in Yoshida on the Sox. I have his name filed away in my mind.

Roki Sasaki would be the ideal choice of course but it’s a long shot and considering that Yoshinabu Yamamoto will be available next year on top of being one of the best pitchers in the NBP (nasty stuff and doesn’t walk anybody), I want him on my team so so bad.

This was one of the greatest games I've ever watched. I wonder if I will feel the final is anti-climatic, much the same as the Sox in the 2004 World Series after coming back from the Yankee series. Ever…as in EVER?? Now I’m feeling sorry for not catching any of the WBC(don’t have FS1).

Yup, I'd be happy with either pitcher. Sasaki wouldnt be posted fir awhile I think. He's pretty young.

Ever…as in EVER?? Now I’m feeling sorry for not catching any of the WBC(don’t have FS1). The fan atmosphere in pretty much every WBC game has been amazing--like a World Series game 7. It really enhances the viewing experience when the whole stadium is hanging on every pitch and going nuts on big plays.

Yup, definitely want that Murakami guy! The great Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami realized he was going to be a novelist at a baseball game: "One bright April afternoon in 1978, I attended a baseball game at Jingu Stadium, not far from where I lived and worked. It was the Central League season opener, first pitch at one o’clock, the Yakult Swallows against the Hiroshima Carp. I was already a Swallows fan in those days, so I sometimes popped in to catch a game—a substitute, as it were, for taking a walk. [...] The sky was a sparkling blue, the draft beer as cold as could be, and the ball strikingly white against the green field, the first green I had seen in a long while. The Swallows first batter was Dave Hilton, a skinny newcomer from the States and a complete unknown. He batted in the leadoff position. The cleanup hitter was Charlie Manuel, who later became famous as the manager of the Cleveland Indians and the Philadelphia Phillies. [...] I think Hiroshima’s starting pitcher that day was Yoshiro Sotokoba. [...] In the bottom of the first inning, Hilton slammed Sotokoba’s first pitch into left field for a clean double. The satisfying crack when the bat met the ball resounded throughout Jingu Stadium. Scattered applause rose around me. In that instant, for no reason and on no grounds whatsoever, the thought suddenly struck me: I think I can write a novel." lithub.com/haruki-murakami-the-moment-i-became-a-novelist/

I know this is somewhat off topic but I’m sorry, I’m curious - I know NPB rules restrict their players from being able to become international free agents until they’ve accrued a certain amount of service time, but what, if anything, is stopping a Japanese player from coming stateside straight out of high school?

Murakami is one of my favorite writers, thanks for sharing this.

They're allowed to, we got Junichi Tazawa before he was in NPB. Ohtani was considered a candidate to go to America out of HS.
NPB pays its young stars pretty well, so it doesn't really make economic sense for them to leave and be subject to the MLB international bonus pool. Maybe it makes sense for a generational talent that can take up a team's entire bonus pool and is racing towards a $300 million MLB contract.

You can just see Japan going to the best player in the world in Ohtani to finish the game.
Who else would you want?

Schwarber is just a gamer, I love that dude The Sox miss him a lot. He was the PERFECT guy for that team when they got him. He became a team leader instantly. I tend to think the “good clubhouse guy” and “intangibles” stuff is overrated a bit in baseball, but Schwarber was an exception. He’s just a winner and a natural leader.

Trout vs Ohtani, 2 outs in the 9th, one run game. You can’t script this stuff

Schwarber was a awesome fit for a bad team last year, but if Yoshida is as good as advertised, he might be a better fit moving forward.

Cool ending. The Angels can now breathe easy. Can you imagine if Ohtani plunked his regular season teammate Trout and put him on the shelf?
Fantastic series/tournament.

good pitching beats good hitting That last pitch was untouchable. Ohtani might get 500 million this year, who knows?

Also may have thrown this game by swinging 3-0 on an outside pitch, even with his HR

Right team won. Japan wanted it a lot more - they had their best pitchers and were getting half the county to watch the games. Ohtani having a great moment is perfect for the sport.
