Right team won. Japan wanted it a lot more - they had their best pitchers and were getting half the county to watch the games. Ohtani having a great moment is perfect for the sport. Japan was the better team as soon as the US decided that the ace of their pitching staff was going to be Lance friggin’ Lynn. I understand why none of the top pitchers participate in this thing, but that’s the same reason it’s hard to take the end result too seriously. Adam Wainwright? Seriously? I actually had to look up tonight’s started because I didn’t know who he was. On another note, Aaron Judge needed to be a part of team USA.

Feel kind of bad for Trout. That was probably his one shot at having a meaningfully great baseball moment.

Entirely agree that it was a insanely bad look on Judge after a 60 home run season not to show up for the big games this WBC. That's pretty much the story of his career thankfully. Not playing in the biggest games like the World series and WBC. Not sure of his injury situation, but it was probably his last shot at representating his country.

Yeah, Judge NEEDED to be part of the team. That was a no-brainer as far as marketing it, too. Typical for MLB to miss a good chance to market its product. As for the starting pitching, how many of the top 20 American-born starters were on this team? Any of them? I’m thinking Scherzer, Verlander, DeGrom, Burnes, Wheeler, Cole, Ray, Gausman, Bieber, Cease, McClanahan, Manoah, Gallen, Fried etc…. I know some of these guys are injured at the moment but none were involved. Amazing they still almost won it.

Lame to see Manfred right after the final out crying about the U.S. not having it's best pitchers; while true the final score in the championship game was 3-2 so the pitchers did their job. Would it kill Manfred to show some class?

I don’t think anyone on the planet could hit a 101mph slider an inch off the plate. That was an incredible pitch to end the game.

I don’t think anyone on the planet could hit a 101mph slider an inch off the plate. That was an incredible pitch to end the game. The real story of today's baseball was on the 2-1 pitch. Ohtani threw an absolute meatball - dead center of the strike zone, there to be crushed. But he threw it 100 mph and Trout missed it. There is a reason why the current focus on pitching is to throw the ball absolutely as hard as you can. Stuff at that echelon is very difficult for even the best hitters to handle. It has led to the current 3 true outcomes sport that is really hurting the spectator aspect of the game. As much as it would shake the foundations of the game, it might be time to move the mound back 5 feet or so.

I'd be more inclined to try shaving it down by 6", but yeah.

If Manfred wants American pitchers in the WBC he needs to offer teams some incentive. I don't think he'd need a big carrot, just create a WBC compensation round in the draft between the 10th and 11th rounds or something.

Thanks. I hadn't seen the quote reported until immediately following the game. It's still not a respectful comment to make even before the game.

I found the WBC this year to be wildly entertaining and I will say only this. Whether it has meaning or not, it clearly meant something to the participants, and low and behold, when it means something to the players, we get to see the best version of baseball. There will always be injury concerns and nay sayers, but like Benji Gil said, this tournament sparked a whole new generation of interest in Mexico and other places, and that can only be good for the sport.
