Mayer might need a week off The kid is 20. In 2022 the average age for a hitter in AA was 24.2. By all accounts he is working hard and doing what he needs to do to get better. It will happen.

Sure it does. He takes the buyout and negotiates a contract with the club that's more than 1/6.7, right? Even going to the numbers mentioned above is giving the team a discount while getting him paid more than he otherwise would have with the player option. The player option is lost if he's traded ? I don't see that on Cot's. Where do you see that?

This is all fair but I also don’t think it’s unfair to say he should get a little break. Maybe not a full week but a couple games to unplug a la Casas got seems reasonable.

The hilarious part of Rafaela's walks today is that he seemed entirely unable to take a pitch yesterday. He had some bad swings at really atrocious ones! And every time I point that out people thing I'm burying him rather than making an observation. In journalism there is a saying that if both sides are pissed you're doing your job. I appreciate you.

The basis of disagreement is the question of whether anything needs fixing.

I always felt like they underestimated his power-tool, even as he was skyrocketing through Salem last year. I am NOT making Mookie Betts comps, in terms of his potential (although everyone in the world did underestimate Betts, in terms of power, and look how that turned out)... But Rafaela is similar to Betts in that his swing is much more linear and "natural" than almost every player these days. More and more, I'm just starting to think he may be that outlier type guy that defies what has now become "conventional" thinking about how a hitter like Roman Anthony projects, based on backspin, max exit velocity, etc.
I realize that plenty will disagree. Rafaela is on the polar opposite side of the spectrum to Betts when it comes to chase rate... we shall have to wait and see. I'm excited though, I don't know how you can't be based on what he's doing every day on the field

Just don't sit him when I'm there... I have the worst luck with Mayer. In camp in 2022 he avoided the back fields almost the entire time we were there. Last year I saw him in Delmarva on a day he was dealing with a small back issue and looked horrendous before exiting early, then was fine a day or two later. Clearly his struggles are being caused by proximity to me, now that I think of it. He's the anti-Devers.

Not wanting to be traded isn't the same as selecting where you want to play during the offseason. If another team offered like $8m more I bet they'd be happy to move on. But at any rate I never said anything about being traded. I didn't say he's going to leave. I said he can decline is player option and negotiate a deal with the Red Sox during the offseason if he wants to stay. But he'd be nuts to exercise the option. There's a lot of room between 1/6.7 and a discount to stay with the Red Sox.

If Rafaela posted a Darren Lewis career would we be happy? How about Coco Crisp? Darren Lewis had 8 career WAR and a single season high of 1.6. I'd be a little disappointed with that. "Darren Lewis but with fewer walks" seems like a plausible failure mode for Rafaela, though.
Crisp, on the other hand, had 30 career WAR and peaked at 5.2. I'd take that!

Rafaela continues to make the doubters look wrong he's showing more pop and today showed he has the ability to take walks. At worst he's a Pillar/Kiermaier player with elite defense.

Pillar is I think the best comp I've seen for what a reasonable expectation might be for Rafaela. With the hope that the defense doesn't fall off as much as Pillar's did, that's a really solid player. Ezequiel Tovar is another one I've brought up before where I think Rafaela's MLB line could look really similar, but we don't have a long track record with him yet. If he's better than those guys that's awesome, but those would be totally solid outcomes to me.

There's about a 3x difference in career WAR between those two. Pillar at his peak was a 15 to 20 hr player with an elite glove. Kiermaier 10 to 15 hrs a year with a decent average plus GG in the outfield. If Rafaela ends up being as good as either of them that'll be insane IMO

But right now he's doing extremely well at the triple A level.

They give me the chills as if my heart were crusting over with ice! Like a love child of Meg Foster and a White Walker!

Anthony has had his strikeout slump the last 10 games, but jeeeeeez his contact is so loud it's crazy. He's just smashing balls into left field like nothing.
