Ha! Sabermatrics! Me? Nope - I am an old dude, an old school baseball fan who doesn't give a rat's ass for advanced stats. I watch the game, remember what I see, use my brain. I know I drive you and many others on this site crazy. Live with it (I stick around to live with you all!) Agree with this as someone else who has been a fan since the 60s. I do like the WAR stat as I feel like it takes the emotion out of player comps. I enjoy the emotion (as an emotional fan) - I glace at it but it is just a number with lots of exceptions throughout the season. It's all kind of noise to me.

Post game show - discussing if Houck is a starter or a reliever (his third time through the order numbers are awful).
Pap and Rice are wondering "who is calling the pitches". Red Sox pitchers are missing their spots so much this year - so many mistakes in locations.

Why are there so many garbage pitchers like Joe Jacques, Bear Claw, Brandon Walter on this team? Bad luck or just poor draft/development, or incapable of identifying good pitching in FA, this is on GM. Bloom refuses to draft power arms early. Since Bloom became GM, approximately six pitchers drafted have achieved 1 WAR. I get the frustration, though.

Drafting “fast rising” power arms are also not a guarantee. Just ask Durbin Feltman. Drafting pitching has been an issue with this team for multiple GM’s.

I just took a peek at the revised rankings at this home page for pitchers. Who's coming along?
Perales at 7 (est 2026 arrival in the majors) Gonzalez at 8 (est 2025 arrival) Drohan at 13 (struggling at AAA) Walter at 15 (yikes)
everyone else ranked 25 downward.
Going to have to go shopping for some arms.

Post game Cora - "Houck's stuff was good - lots of swing and miss, we will find a way. Got to keep working" Offense "not putting the ball in play, so can't score runs - Bradish one of the best pitchers in MLB" "Os have been on the way since Sept 21 - hitters controlling the zone, chase rate down, good D - earning best team in AL standing"

It’s getting stale. The score was 11-2

I didn't post Cora's post game to dump on him - just to share what he said. I truly believe he does all he can to support his players. He is caught between a rock and a hard place - he hasn't been given the horses - and it is evident in how they are playing what they are lacking. So, he says what he feels he needs to say, realizing that everyone watches what actually goes on in the games.

SP the red sox have drafted and developed (domestic draft not international FA’s) 2005: Buchholz 2006 Masterson 2017: Houck, Crawford
And i think thats pretty much anyone of note.
Pretty clear this has been an organizational wide issue and not a bloom issue given this is going back to the Theo(!!!) era

Jail Rafaela! (I don't think the bat is ready; he's starting to remind me of Yoan Moncada's debut.) Tomorrow is Saturday!

Man I really hope this team doesn't sink below .500. Just a nice respectable 84 wins, that's all I ask for. Winning record, finish ahead of the Yankees, load up on pitching in the offseason.

Brasier in LA. Coaching has absolutely been an issue

Tanner post game - "first 5 innings great, didn't execute well in the 6th, got to continue to learn and push to get better each time" (These are pretty cringeworthy to watch, really)

Well look at the bright side. The Red Sox are battling the Yankees for history, trying to become the greatest team evah..to finish last. An 82-80 record in the basement would do the trick. The Yankees lost tonight too so the Sox still have some chasing to do, but I'm beginning to believe they could pull it off. The basement is within reach. But can they stay above .500? That'll be the tricky part. The tricky question is whether the advantages of finishing behind the MFY are worth the pain. Tankathon has the Red Sox at R1-16 through tonight's action. They could move as high 13 but would have to slip behind the MFY (as well as SF and Cincy) to do so. This year's draft showed that every spot counts. If we had drafted 15th, instead of 14th, do we get Teel? OTOH, they are the MFY and the idea of finishing behind them turns my stomach.

Comparing this year and last year
We are at 72-69, run differential +15
Last year after 141 games we were 69-72 (oddly symmetrical) - finishing 78-84 (so finished 9-12) ended with a -52 run differential

Yes, I know. You and I watch games and players very differently. I'm not saying he hasn't helped the team offensively though; I'm specifically saying he doesn't look so far like he can handle MLB pitching. My evidence is the 45% K rate. Do you disagree with that?
The whole team seems to strike out every time up these days. I’m not going to condemn him over a small sample of inconsistent playing time. I want to see what he can do with a longer leash, however. Play him for the next couple weeks(in CF). If he’s still striking out 45% of the time, I will be concerned.

I just don’t know if this crappy Sox team can hang in long enough to make it happen. Fingers are crossed!
