Even if the Sale thing is true do we know what the return was? Probably the same as the salary dumps with Beckett and Gonzalez. I am not Sale hater at all. Will always have the vision of him cork screwing Machado into the ground to end 2018 WS as a favorite memory. The reality is Sale has appeared in 30 games since 2019. If someone offers to relieve you of that contract, you have to move him. Do we know it was even a pure salary dump? Pretty sure I read it wasn’t, it had mlb pieces coming back What if that was Javy Baez? Do you still HAVE to move him? Also he was 10/5 so even if you wanted to move him you can’t without his approval, and he seems to really like it here?

Fairbanks perpetually looks like a 12-year-old who has just had an illusion shattered. And our hitters can't touch him

I'm nervous. Team needs to go .600 for me to hit my 79 win guess

My hot take: events are contingent, fate is nothing more than a narrative projected onto the past, and there is no single moment that determined the course of this season. Except that you were around in ‘04 when Varitek stuffed his mitt into Arod’s face and you know better.

Interesting what Cora said postgame about Abreu and Valdez..I was glad that Chaim got those 2 from that organization they have the right hitting approach are short to the ball and hit the ball hard and stay in the zone. I noticed that right away. Sox players in the past have been swing at everything until Chaim came in and he has drafted players that will take walks and are short to the ball. You can say all you want how bad he was with the major league and i will not argue, but his drafting has been damn good.

Funny story - that was the only season I never saw one minute of, as I was out of the country the entire year. Read about the World Series win in an internet cafe a few days after it happened.

Anyone else getting intrigued by the defensive flashes Valdez seems to be showing over the past few games? Improving to limited/below average from “piss poor” excites me. Especially because Reyes works as a handedness and defense caddy to a guy who can really knock RHP around.

I think it's going to be fascinating to see how pitchers try to approach Abreu after testing him out for holes in his swing. They've gotten a failing grade so far. Of course it's a much thornier problem to solve for a player with plate discipline. He'll just end up on base anyway if they fail on the margin. He's a revelation.

But as was emphasized on the podcast, the draft is largely the responsibility of others.

But yes, that still may not have been enough in the end. I am curious to what extent feelings like this by Jansen, other veterans, and Cora & the coaching staff made its way up to the top and that led to Chaim's axing. "We just wanted a starter and he wouldn't freaking do anything!" We know now the "Underdog" t-shirts was a bit of a joke at Bloom's expense, but I wonder if there were more direct complaints despite a lot of kind words said by players and coaches since his ouster.

Of course, we'd have to have the fortune to acquire the starting pitcher that actually performed well after moving. Acquiring Giolito, Lorenzen, or Flaherty for example wouldn't have helped for the playoffs or the farm system.

It isn't like this roster right now is guaranteed of anything that I can see. We are gonna have a losing record for the second year in a row. There are some nice pieces, but there is sh*t ton of work to do. You could go 6 ways to Sunday on all this stuff. It isn't like he saying something that wasn't being said by a lot people, including this board. I don't get being so dismissive of the labor to the point of disqualifying them from their opinion, which is kind of what you are doing here. Beyond whether he is right or wrong, these guys don't play 162 games for just the fun of it, they want to win.

I don't get being so dismissive of the labor to the point of disqualifying them from their opinion, which is kind of what you are doing here. Beyond whether he is right or wrong, these guys don't play 162 games for just the fun of it, they want to win. It is interesting it is a guy in his first year. Bloom allegedly assured Kiké they’d compete. Folks around here have wondered about issues regarding FA recruiting, but if your FO tells FAs you are going to be good… then doesn’t follow through… that probably doesn’t help. Kenley has few years left. Does he care what A-ball guys get sent to win now? If you want to sign FAs — many of whom are closer to the end than the beginning — you need them to believe you are serious about the present.

Every single starting pitcher moved at the deadline except for one has been bad. This is weak stuff. Kenley's entitled to his opinion this is just a stupid one (and lol at making it a thing about the "labor") and plenty of stupid opinions are widely held.

I will say to Jansen's credit, it wasn't he like he was being whiney about this back when it happened. After being told about Chaim's "Underdog" comments in lieu of an inactive trade deadline, Kenley said, ""That’s a motivation to me. If you want to put us as underdogs or put us that we’re not gonna make the playoffs, stuff like that always fuels me. I want that to fuel all these other guys in here and be hungry about it to prove everybody wrong. For me, my whole life, I proved everybody wrong. I want (everybody) in this clubhouse to feel the same way, too." www.nbcsportsboston.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/rafael-devers-kenley-jansen-react-red-sox-mlb-trade-deadline/545855/Unfortunately just being extra motivated wasn't enough.
