I can't help but watch Eovaldi and think to myself that if the Sox had brought him back they'd only need one more top notch starter rather than 2. With Eovaldi's lack of durability they'd still need a depth starter but that's the case with most starters these days as 150 innings seems to be a tall task It's funny. When Dombrowski brought back Eovaldi I kind of thought it might be a thank you contract, but honestly, Eovaldi is simply flat out, a damn good pitcher, and a big game pitcher at that. He's not probably going to be a Cy Young candidate and you know hell miss tine, but its not like hes being paid 30 million for his 125 - 150 innings. I'm just impressed with him. Really wished the Sox hadnt gone over the limit in 22 and spent the money in 23 and felt they couldnt wait for him or go over the limit again. He sure is nails in the playoffs. But I don't feel like there's much opportunity cost in not having him going forward. He'd basically be another Sale: good if healthy, but likely to miss time. Which is not what they most need. If we're going to lament the pitchers who turned down the Red Sox making them their best offer, I'd look at Eflin first. And if we're lamenting pitchers they should have signed in general, I'd look at Senga.
I understand the Sale comparison in principle but disagree on substance. Eovaldi over the last 3 years has averaged 140 something innings while Sale over the past 3 years has totaled 140 something innings. Sale also got paid 29 million per year while Eovaldi was signed to a reasonable short term contract for about 19 million per year. I don't lament the Eflin loss because I'm not convinced he'd pitch as well with the Sox as he did with Tampa. I would have liked Senga but the Sox held back from being serious players for him, which was regrettable.

Are you sure Eovaldi would have pitched as well with Boston as he has with Texas? His FIP, xFIP, and xERA were all higher in 2023 than they were in 2021-22. If he had to pitch in Fenway, on an AL East schedule, and above all in front of the Red Sox' defense, he might have had like a 4.30 ERA. Better than Kluber, obviously, but not the kind of deal where we'd feel like he was an amazing bargain.

Reasonably sure as one could be about a team with horrendous defense, but then again that's not on the pitcher. His numbers took a bit of a hit as he came back too soon from injury, but I'm pretty sure for 19 million per year over the short term and not having to spend 50 plus million to improve the starting pitching or trading prospects you'd rather not to get a front line starter in a trade, I'd rather Eovaldi would have stayed.

Not everyone has to be a bargain. If you pay a guy $19M but he's worth "only" $16M that's fine. In fact... I'd say that was the biggest issue with the Bloom years is his failure to act upon that. You don't sign veterans to be a bargain, you sign them to play well, and you supplement them with underpaid arb and pre-arb guys.
"The Red Sox would've been much better off if they'd signed Eovaldi or Elfin" is really a very apparent thing and quibbling over whether they'd have had slightly higher ERAs in a worse pitching environment is missing the forest for the trees.

I have a bad feeling about game 7 for the Phillies. This could be the season that Kimbrel killed.

I don't disagree with that, really. I didn't mean 'bargain' that literally. I just think in the alternate universe in which the Red Sox re-sign Eovaldi the move is regarded as... fine. Most would think it was okay, a few would complain. But since you brought it up, I actually don't think the Red Sox were in a position to *not* get bargains on their free agent signings because they weren't getting enough value out of the cost-controlled guys to have the luxury of being profligate. Every win they could get mattered. In the event, of course, they spent $20 million on Kluber and Kiké to combine for -2.5 WAR and another $16 million on a relief pitcher, so, yeah. There were a lot of ways to be more efficient than that.
ADD: Quick math... looks like they got about 18 WAR out of cost-controlled players. I think that means that to be a playoff contender they needed to get about 22 WAR out of their free agent spending, which totaled about $160 million. That would have meant spending about $7 million/WAR, which would be better than the going rate. They did terribly this season with that spending, as it turns out, getting only like 10 WAR. So even somewhat inefficient spending would have been better than that; but to be good enough that actually would have had to be efficient.

Spotting Scherzer three runs in a game seven is though.

If Texas wins it wont be hard to figure out who the ALCS MVP would be, with apologies to Eovaldi, but Adolis Garcia has been lethal. Another star player who got away from the Cardinals.

For Game 7, Rangers likely have Max Scherzer vs Javier. I wonder if Bruce Bochy will think back to a different Game 7 tomorrow night: “Bumgarner will be available to pitch in relief despite throwing 117 pitches Sunday night in Game 5 while pitching a four-hit shutout at San Francisco. He has been the star of the postseason, going 4-1 with a 1.13 ERA in six starts and holding the Royals to one run in 16 innings while winning two starts in the World Series. ‘It's his normal throw day (between starts) and he would throw 40-50 pitches in the bullpen,’ Bochy said Wednesday afternoon. ‘He's set to go, says he feels greats. I don't know how much we'll use if we do use him. It's all going to depend on how he feels.’” Jordan Montgomery will be on two days rest as of tomorrow night. And away we go. Praying for Rangers’ fans sakes they don’t have to use Chapman!

Between leaving in JP France and not PH'ing for Maldonado, I'm wondering if Dusty thinks there's a game 8.

The game is far from over given the adventures of the rangers bullpen
But it’s looking good for everyone but Astros fans across the league right now
