Craig Counsell being treated something like an NBA free agent worth twice the max NBA contract is a little bewildering to me

Maybe the Sox can hire Ross to be in the front office. I was thinking to manage 3B until Cora moves up/out Possible for sure. Plus he does have that link to the 2013 squad with Breslow and Breslow just came from the Cubs.

Counsell seems like a good manager but $8M a year for him seems rather excessive to me.

So, am I wrong, or does this mean Counsell was interviewing for a job that someone else held?
Always considered that a low-class move.

So, am I wrong, or does this mean Counsell was interviewing for a job that someone else held? Always considered that a low-class move. It sure sounds like it based off this story on ESPN's main page. "Today we made the difficult decision to dismiss David Ross as our Major League Manager," Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said in a statement. As you point out that's a low class move to me on both the Cubs and Counsell. www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/38833334/sources-craig-counsell-bolts-brewers-manage-cubs

But at least I get where they'd be coming from, in a kind of 'it's a cut-throat business' sense. ie. 'We like Ross, but if we can get Counsell let's do it'.

Teoscar Hernandez does not get the QO

Teoscar Hernandez does not get the QO I'm a little surprised by that. One year 20 or so mil for him doesn't sound unreasonable if he accepted it and if he were to decline it they get a pick. He wouldn't be my #1 position player target but that certainly increases my interest at the very least. He could be a solid RHH power bat for the lineup.

Witt wasn't even a finalist, and I think I read somewhere that the reason is that their formula for picking finalists is DRS-heavy, and DRS does a poor job of adjusting for positioning, whereas OAA does take it into account. The Royals as a team stunk at defensive positioning, so Witt, who is a legitimately great defender, had a poor DRS (-6) but a great OAA. Volpe was just the opposite: he had a +15 DRS and a +1 OAA. So by implication the Yankees were great at positioning but Volpe was a fairly mediocre defender. Or the other possibility is that defensive metrics are all just total nonsense. I don’t buy defensive metrics overall, but GG has always been the award most impacted by hype and reputation. It is like a club… once you are “in” as a “great defender,” you are in forever, through off years or decline. It used to be more based on hitting than defense but Volpe barely peeked over the Mendoza line at the end of the season. I guess now it's just a way for NY writers to pump themselves up after a 4th place finish. N.B. Trevor Story was 7th in DRS (a counting stat) with 8 despite barely playing. He trailed Volpe (who was 3rd), who had 15, despite trailing Volpe in innings played 1346 to 314. Side note: I have no idea why people on this board keep proposing that we get another SS and move Story back to 2B. If he keeps it up, why would you even move him for Mayer?

Then Genius Joe rode a ridiculously stacked lineup and Jon Lester to a WS in the most blatant case of winning despite the manager that the sport has ever seen.

@tigers Introducing our newest Tiger! We have acquired OF Mark Canha from Milwaukee, in exchange for Minor League RHP Blake Holub. Had an 11.5 million club option with a 2 million buyout. Holub is unranked. Probably the Tigers were the one team willing to pick up the option. Cahna is a righty OF the same age as Duvall with similar WAR production, although not a similar player beyond that Makes for an interesting landing spot for Verdugo if the Sox decide to trade for Burnes.

I doubt they'd be trading away rental veterans just to acquire a rental veteran. If anything, I think this signals they'd be in the market for players like Duran, abreu and rafaela as part of a package for guys like burnes and adames

Milwaukee has Felick, Wiemer, Mitchell, Yelich and Chourio by mid season in the OF. I can't see any OF aside from Anthony interesting them.

Wanting to move a shortstop with good range and arm troubles to second base seems pretty rational to me. I kind of agree that in the short term, as far as allocation of resources goes, it makes more sense to fill 2B than SS. But the concern with Story isn't the immediate, it's the long term.
