Patriots 2024 Offseason Thread

I think anything frankly is in play. Wolf and company is acting like Bill, heck they are acting like this is year one of a rebuild with Bill. What's the one thing with Bill you could never do? Assume you know what they are going to do. GM is on record saying he wants to stockpile picks. Heck Mel Kiper Jr. is starting to think maybe Patriots are thinking towards 2025 given their free agency, not 2024. So maybe no QB If Kraft was heavily involved, is this what we he would have wanted so far? Especially given the narrative around him? Reports the Patriots are playing hardball with free agents, just like Bill did. Look at last time they took a QB they didn't love, but thought was just okay. Yeah I don't think Kraft is giving orders. Not the guy that stopped Bill from trading Mac Jones and going after Will Levis. We'll see maybe they have some surprises in store going forward before the draft. Let the first bullet fired it's not the owner it's the GM. Kraft loves fans like you which made him rich. Unused cap space the last 3 years $107,616, $1,189,930 and $22,317. The narrative about Kraft is crazy. If you want to have an issue, it's the strategy not his spending. They under Bill preferred a more balanced roster aimed at the best 53 man roster and not a top heavy star studed one. In the end it always equals out money wise, so it really is which team building strategy you prefer. Kraft isn't Henry! Part of the reason I love football, there are no cheap owners like Baseball. The salary ceiling and floor is set yearly off Revenue. Red Sox fans taking their issues with the Red Sox out on the Patriots.

I don't want to take the credit of someone else's work, but someone use Sportrac to break down the Patriots real cash spent year by year. I'm 99% confident they're taking either Daniels or Maye. They'll probably take a LT in the 2nd round and then whatever. Next year after another poor season they'll take a highly rated WR. The only other thought is maybe trading down for JJ, but you might only be able to slide down a few spots if you believe the Giants would take at 6 which means there's not that much value. If you have 2 guys that scouts are raving about and you trade down and 1 of them is a hit, you're never going to live that down. It's easier to live with a swing and a miss rather than trying to maneuver around and trying to out smart everyone. I don't think Kraft wants that PR when they have the Brissett or the next Jarrett Stidham or Bailey Zappe throwing passes to MHJ while Maye or Daniels pops like CJ Stroud. Just get the WR next year. So we can start the tank for Tetairoa McMillan movement already. 😀😀

Cash spending goes up and down, the chart you linked shows that. Yet over 12 years the top team versus bottom was 170 million or 14 million a season. It's nothing, that's about the difference total that the lowest and highest spending Baseball teams will do in a single season, not 12 years. It just depends what cycle you are on. Do that chart in 2021 Patriots rank much better, do it after two down years they look bad, Especially with Covid in there. 2020 is Covid opt outs, most in NFL. We faulting the owner for that? Spending big in 2021, you end up with dead money and get down years. Sure you could keep spending big, like Bucs with Brady. Yet in the end it all equals out, you'll just have bigger down years. There's basically no spending variance overtime in the NFL.

A note on Caleb Williams, purported malcontent. No word on how many teammates attended his birthday party, however.

It's not crazy. Supposedly since 1994 the Patriots are 31st out of 32 in real cash spending. I don't want to take the credit of someone else's work, but someone use Sportrac to break down the Patriots real cash spent year by year. Since 2020 they were: 32nd 4th 26th 31st I can not speak to this person's results but I do know that every dollar spent on a player -- ie, cash spent -- ends up on the cap. It might be on this year's cap, next years, five years out, but it is real and ends up on the cap. The inverse is also true -- every cap charge has a corresponding cash expenditure paid to a player. Thus it is irrefutable if a team spends to the cap year in and year out, they are not skirting "paying players." The owner is not cheap. Now one thing I am uncertain on ( I started to research it, but got bogged down & did not pick it back up) is a possible explanation for this cash/cap alleged discrepancy: LTBE & NLTBE bonuses -- one is credit as cash expenditure in the year played (I think, LTBE) and the other is not. The Patriots typically use a lot of these. Now, how the other bonus is categorized in the year it hits the cap I'm unsure -- is it possible it is never credited as "cash spending" even though it was paid to the player & otherwise charged to the cap? I was reading the CBA a couple weeks back but couldn't (easily) find specific language to answer my question. I thought I had read online months back that was an issue (maybe PatsCap?) and cause of confusion. Someone else feel free to pick up the ball or suss it out with Miguel? Or maybe I'll get back to it, eventually.

Or maybe I'll get back to it, eventually. I wanted to go over the spread sheet and just compare against different ownerships. My first impression though is Kraft has been on the cheaper side. I'm no cap expert, but real dollars talks. He was top 10 5 times since 1994 and once in the top 5. I hate the narrative of don't spend because we're bad anyways. That's fine for 1, maybe 2 years but when you're on year 3 of losing then just put something together to try and be better. But I wanted to see how cash spending worked for other clubs to make the comparison more fair. Overall being 31 out of 32 since 94 doesn't sound great. Though here's another caveat. Skimming through those comments and there's questions about the 90s and how cash spending was calculated. Also, I'm fairly confident the Patriots were a very low revenue stream when Kraft first bought them so I'm assuming it's more fair to start after the 1st or 2nd Superbowl when more eyes got put on them. Edit: Still haven't done the research, but supposedly Kraft is dead last in real cash spent over the last 10 years.

A hip drop tackle for those that don't know isn't just tackling at the hip. It's a rugby style tackle tought by the Seahawks. It's grip, twist body and drop to ground. It's that twisting of the body and then dropping on them they want to eliminate. The biggest worry being that get clean tackles wrong and call penalties.
I'm more offended by them wanting to do XFL kickoff rules.

This is the definition of a hip-drop tackle: (a) grabs the runner with both hands or wraps the runner with both arms; and (b) unweights himself by swiveling and dropping his hips and/or lower body, landing on and trapping the runner’s leg(s) at or below the knee.

Jaylinn hawkins per draft scouting reports is a big hitting strong safety. Which is interesting as his one year starting was at FS and his pass D wasn't good. A bunch of targeting penalties in College chasing those monster hits. Looks like a nice cheap replacement for Philips as a depth piece as a strong safety.
They have done a nice job filling out depth on D, somewhat on offense. Can we get a difference maker?
Simmons at FS, Gilmore or Jackson at CB and Clowney at DE/OLB. Now that would give you a chance to have a top defense and allow you to focus most draft capital on offense. Yeah it's unlikely, but let's dream on the few difference makers still available.
Go sign Donovan Smith or Charles Leno Jr. for LT, Leno had hip surgery recently, likely misses some time to start the year.
I was just looking at Foreman as a good cheap short yardage RB and he signed yesterday. The extra cap space meant the market moved faster than in prior years. Even just depth pieces are disappearing quickly.

I really just don't see it with Williams. He needs to mature quick if he's going to be a successful NFL QB. He may be good but I don't see that the generational qb tag should be applied to him at all.
So far it looks like the bears are doing what they can to set him up for success so we'll see.

I'm good with adding the pieces that UMass mentioned. Really want Gilmore. I know he's not what he was but still good and would allow Marcus to EARN the Slot job (would think Gilmore would move J Jones to the #1 slot spot with Marcus backing up for now).
I really hope they use the space they still have on extensions for Barmore and Judon (the latter wouldn't necessarily use up space, iirc). Would imagine a long-term deal for Dugger is still in the cards. Would think they could lower his cap # from the 13.
Just not sure there is a bunch of FAs to eat up much of the remainder (well, remainder less the buffer for what's needed during the season, including the draftees). Also not sure a trade is in the cards.

Oh, and I just want draft day to get here. Just saw (didn't read) an article suggesting they don't have to draft a QB bc they have Nathan Rourke. So that's where we are.
Seriously, though. I could talk myself into SO many different scenarios. I'm ready to just start pulling for the guys they draft.

We are still a ways out, but I would imagine at some point over the next month the nonsense ends and the Commanders decide Maye is their guy at 2. Chris Simms having Drake Maye as his 6th ranked quarterback might be the peak of crazy.
In the meantime, I’m hoping for Maye.

So the Pats gonna meet every QB except Penix. This to me signifies that they are probably sticking at number 3. Not because they missed Penix’s pro day. But because they missed Odunze’s pro day.

Wouldn’t look into them not going to Washington’s pro day, they hired Tyler Hughes to coach WR and he was Washington’s offensive quality control coach last year. He has more insight into the receivers and Penix than any pro-day would reveal.
