I've done a full 360, and I'm back to QB no matter what, Williams >> Maye >>> Daniels >>>> Trade Down >> McCarthy. I'd rather try and be wrong on Daniels than not try at all. I'm not a super knowledgeable draft guy, but my understanding is next year is a terrible QB class. They have nothing at the position now. I'd rather swing and miss than try nothing over the next 2 years.

I try not to put much credence in the anonymous musings of "league execs" but it would seem a league-wide backlash over Kraft is starting to really boil over. "It’s like Kraft can’t live in a world where he is looked at as the problem," is a pretty damning assessment to have circulating.

Maybe the most confusing part of this offseason for me has been the crazy love for Jayden Daniels and yet not one team would even give Justin Fields a chance to start. Fields college tape was so much better throwing wise. He didn't start the eyes down and run crap till he faced NFL defenses every game. Daniels does that in College after 5 years starting.
The Athletic scouting report, ceiling a lesser Jalen Hurts/Rich Gannon, floor a lesser Justin Fields type.
After your tier one guys in Williams and Maye, one thing I don't agree with The Athletic on is I see the next 5 basically in the same tier. It's more what do you want?
One thing that's a must for me at QB is creating passing with the players legs. I love Penix, I'm only taking him as a value play. Daniels basically does none of that after 5 years, not drafting him unless it's a value play. Nix and McCarthy are the next two that are crazy good at that, with Rattler behind them.
No Maye at #3, go WR, trade down or if you absolutely have to take a QB take McCarthy or Nix. I hate that value wise, but they will add something we've basically never had at QB and fit the modern day NFL. Not just some running ability, the ability to throw on the move outside the pocket.

Instead of people opinions, why doesn't a reporter reach out to Ridley to confirm or deny what Kraft said? I just don't see why he'd lie when the player, his wife or his reps could out him with one tweet if it wasn't true.
He has lived and played his whole career in the south, that's a fact.

I really hate trading down because you're risking losing the QB you really want. It's top vital to punt and they have no hope at the position otherwise. Next year if they're a 3 win team they can do whatever they want because they're locked into giving this pick a chance over the next 2-3 years. I just want whomever this team likes the most at QB. Daniels seems to be getting a ton of love for his electric play. I don't trust his size that much, but the love around the league seems real. JJ McCarthy you might need to sit for 2 years to get him up to NFL speed, which I'm willing to do. I don't really love any of these QBs starting right away for this team. They're going to get destroyed and this year is all about the bridge anyways. JJ I think has a lot of upside potential. I love that he's a workaholic and takes his job seriously. I'm seeing Maye has the highest ceiling, lowest floor which I jump all over. I'm a big boom or bust guy at the position. Derek Carr type QBs (meaning good, not great) do nothing for me. You'll win some games, maybe get into the playoffs and then have an early exit. I'd rather a guy be talked about like he's the next Joe Burrow or be a complete bust than a solid guy with maybe some potential that makes it tough to walk away from. I think we should be thankful Mac Jones completely tanked instead of maintaining his rookie season levels.

I know they're low picks, but I'd be annoyed as a Bills fan for giving up a star player like Diggs and having to give up 2 additional draft picks just to get the Vikings 2nd rounder.
I guess this means the Bills window has closed.

I guess this means the Bills window has closed. Dan Jeremiah just said it. Once you pay your QB, you're trusting him to elevate younger (cheaper) receivers. I wouldn't say the window is closed. Keeping it open just requires Josh Allen to do just that.

The road just got a lot tougher for him.

TBC, I'm not saying he's capable and, yes, it just got a LOT tougher. But it just means they have to build it a bit differently now. Maybe it's just semantics but that's different than saying the window is closed.

Houston is gonna be a problem This is the way. Last year, Texans were viewed in less flattering terms than the current sentiment surrounding the Pats. Then they nailed the Stroud pick, made some savvy moves and other picks, exceeded expectations and now they're adding the pieces they need to truly contend. In this league, you're really only a good draft away from changing your trajectory. Get the QB, nail the other picks and roll with it. We've already got a baller defense. And frankly speaking, we're well-positioned to make a deadline trade or 3 that could really reshape this roster.

Two hot takes:
AFC East is opening up. I don't think we should punt for 2+ years. Bills/Jets/Dolphins all have warts and are all facing the issues that comes with paying full freight on a QB. Getting QB right NOW puts us on an even playing field, especially if Defense can hold serve or even improve with Gonzo/Judon back. Just gotta hit on WR, and obviously Bills are competitors at tail end of Rnd 1 for WRs that might have fallen to #34.
My mid-season treatise on teams no longer spreading it around is obviously dead. Texans are tripling down on WR, Bears might do the same if rumor mills are true at #9. New treatise: If you're paying a QB, get one top dog WR; if your QB is on a rookie deal, stack the deck.

After 3 years with Mac Jones. It's funny because I don't like Daniels this high because I see his ceiling as a passer as lowest among the top 7 players. His arm isn't anything special and no creative plays running to throw. I'm not alone with other actual draft experts saying his ceiling is a lesser Jalen Hurts.

I don't get the Diggs trade, they take on an extra $4.3 million in dead money. That contract is crazy good for Houston. They can't even get a 2024 2nd? It's 2025 and sending two picks. Wow, that's way worse than the Hopkins trade.
Then again something needed to be done, perfect example of what big cash spending does. Over $40 million over this year, tons of starters released. Was on pace to be about $40 million over again next year.

The only difference is you might have missed out on a pretty good WR and/or tackle. It's not like the Patriots haven't whiffed on those positions in the past either. I think Jalen Hurts is a good comp, probably less than. I'm liking JJ more and more as the 3rd guy, but he is probably way too raw to start this year and probably next year.

Maybe would should ask Dion Sanders if the Patriots meet his criteria lol. Thats part of the point, elite can't miss guys at top of draft, compared to late first OT and WR, huge difference. Tier one WR rarely bust lately and this draft has some of the better ones in recent history. I've seen WR ranked top two players in the draft for some people.

Would HAVE to think they are taking a QB at some point in the 1st or 2nd rd. Whether it be:
- 3rd pick - a later 1st rd pick (either by trading back from 3 OR taking another position at 3 and moving up from 34) - their 2nd rd pick.
I'd be STUNNED if they don't pick someone by pick 34.
And, AGAIN, they would NOT be "trading back for their guy" If they are trading back, they don't have "a guy" (or, at least, not 1 they want to take without hedging their bets without additional assets to offset the risk).

Just looking at what's available potentially (and admittedly someone could "pop") Just going off this one site, Shedeur Sanders is considered the best prospect of the draft and is given a rating of 91.0 Daniels - 90.5 JJ - 87.6 Maye - 91.6 Penix - 89.5 So basically according to them, the 3rd guy (in this case Daniels) is almost as good as the projected 1st QB next year and to get him you either have to be a 2-win team or you need to give up a ton of capital. Now that ignores other evaluations and I personally like JJ. I think his score is more of a product of needing to grow and learn within a system. After him is Drew Allar at 87.0. www.nfldraftbuzz.com/positions/QB/1/2025So, I don't know, but if I take that as gospel then you're taking a downgrade at best next year in terms of QB prospect and taking an elite WR and possibly elite LT. Assuming those guys hit and Brisett is fine then you're like a 6-7 win team and you're not sniffing at either of the top 2 QBs next year without burning draft capital and even then they're supposedly not on the same level as some guys in this draft (Unless you somehow make a play for Sanders). The only hope is that a few guys really shine and change the narrative to give a few more options. Conversely, if those guys take a step back then you're really in trouble.

"... Assuming those guys hit and Brisett is fine then you're like a 6-7 win team ..."
I see this type of claim frequently, all basically drawing on an assumption that the current roster is "bad."
Many acknowledge the defense is good, or pretty good, without also acknowledging in 2023 they were a top 5-8 defense that played without its two best players for the majority of the year (Gonzo & Judon both injured in Week 4). They will return most of this strong unit.
Also, in 2023 the Patriots led the league in 1-score losses. They were competitive in most every game. They had two major issues: poor QB play, compounded by erratic OL play.
I don't think this is some huge rebuild operation. A healthy functional OL plus a competent (or better) QB and this team is competitive right now.
KC scored 371 points in 2023 and won a Super Bowl. By comparison, Mac Jones-led 2021 Patriots scored 462 points.
The "modern offense" needed to compete and the necessary "weapons to keep up" are silly notions in my eyes. Perhaps the NFL's biggest weapon, Tyreek Hill, was dumped by KC and they've since won two SBs. Buffalo just dumped Diggs, their weapon WR, who local media said was the sort of player we couldn't compete without.
Offense, defense, ST -- they all have value. IMO.

Or decide that a Penix plus plus gained from trading down is a better value than a QB the team is lukewarm on. I'm not advocating for either side of the draft QB or don't argument, merely arguing against what I see as a faulty claim used in the argument. I will say when I play with my mock draft machine, the best looking drafts always involve trading down. Players are crazy expensive at he top of round one; they HAVE to hit.

The only hope is that a few guys really shine and change the narrative to give a few more options. Conversely, if those guys take a step back then you're really in trouble. QB rankings for next year are all over the place, I've seen at least 3 different players ranked #1. What you're missing is all five guys I call tier two in this draft, were ranked much lower this time last year. Daniels was likely a late round draft pick! Yeah anything can happen, but that's the point. The truly elite guys are the ones that are ranked high for years or guys like Burrows who comes out of no where to have one of the best seasons for a QB ever. There's a huge difference in how you rank someone and where they get drafted. Go back to 2021 draft, I had Lawrence #1 and then Fields. Zach Wilson one year wonder didn't impress me against so so teams and neither did the crazy raw Trey Lance who played at a small school. Just like this year they get hyped up, Chris Simms thinking Wilson is #1 QB, he sees Aaron Rodgers. Why I do my own rankings and let the game tape speak. McCarthy might have good upside, he certainly doesn't have elite upside unless it's crap like Tom Brady. Yeah I like him more than Daniels throwing, not saying much. Love his throwing on the run, I just don't see enough, not even close for top 3 grade. I'm risk adverse at #3 with the talent available. I'll take Maye #3 and support that pick no matter what happens. Mac Jones, Cole Strange, Thornton, just some recent guys drafted too high because of need. Draft needs to be about value, which is why I wanted them to fill more holes. Some of the biggest draft busts ever were need picks. You'll never convince me need should trump value. I liked Cole Strange, as a 3rd round pick! They draft JJ McCarthy #3 I hope they know what they are doing. As Texas pointed out, you are so focused on QB at pick #3, that you won't even consider other options. Example Will Levis who I liked last year after reports Bill really liked him. Projected high pick right before draft, drops to 2nd round. You really need to look at all options, I guarantee you the Patriots are. For all we know they love Specer Rattler who similar somewhat to Baker Mayfield who played under Pelt. The Mac Jones draft was they liked Jones and Mills, which is interesting no? Something is up, the crap coming out about the Patriots doesn't stop. Now it's Wolf loves JJ McCarthy, it makes zero sense. You don't hype up a player you want to draft. They are either playing games or they need to get their crap in order. The draft needs to get here ASAP.

Bills trading Stefon Diggs to Houston. As a life long bills fan, good effing riddance! Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Don’t know what the heck diggs problem is or why he’s always in his feelings and gets itchy fingers on social media. Bills gave him the huge contract he wanted, he was always the number 1 target on the team and played with a great quarterback but that was never enough for him always acting like a spoiled little child.
