Patriots 2024 Offseason Thread

Unless he was just blowing smoke about Daniels and was more open to make the Vikings trade or a smidgen more than what was offered, but was also fine taking the player. I think the interest in JJ was real but my guess is that hinged on Maye being gone and getting a very nice package of picks from the Vikings. Or maybe they just wanted to keep fans talking and keep buzz on the team during a slow off-season. If we knew they were taking Maye/Daniels this thread alone would probably have half the comments. Blowing smoke before the draft about certain players is something he should be doing. I have zero issues with that. As I said it's his comments after the draft. If you remember the smoke never came directly from him, it was sources say this, sources say that. Not telling the truth directly from our GM mouth isn't something he should be doing and certainly not for buzz. We just drafted Maye and the summer is filled with OTA and rookie camps. It's funny because I think this all proves the McCarthy crap was just blowing smoke. If he thought his value was top 3 like reports said, why wouldn't he trade down? The only thing I don't get is what was the point of blowing smoke over JJ? Unless that report was truly BS.

I guess it's splitting hairs because I think they end up with Wolf, but I don't get why they wouldn't just announce Wolf or do a real interview process at the beginning of the off-season like every other team who hired a GM. It makes me a bit nervous that Wolf isn't their guy which then circles back to, why did you then let this guy make all your draft picks and run your off-season as well as make personnel decisions? It just seems so backwards either way. I would also suspect if Wolf doesn't get the job then he's not going to be here beyond the year. But I do suspect he'll get the job. It's just weird it seems like they're taking it seriously at this point. Robert Kraft explained why in detail. Did he say something new recently? I'm January he said, "So, in the short-term, we’re looking for collaboration. Our team has a tremendous opportunity to position itself right, given our salary cap space, and we’ve never drafted, in my 30 years of ownership, we’ve never been drafting as low as we’re drafting. “So we’re counting on our internal people, whom we’re still learning and evaluating. So we’re going to let that evolve and develop, and before the key decisions have to be made, we will appoint someone.” Which is fine, but if at the very end of the same exact off-season you decide to go in another direction then what was the point of letting an interim make the most important draft pick in decades and run the off-season? At that time it sounded like they already decided on Wolf, or should have. I don't believe you can have a serious interview process after the off-season. No one will want to come in after the off-season and completely inherent someone else's work unless they themselves are a rookie executive looking for a break or a guy fighting for a last chance. They've had multiple declines already. But again, all of this is likely moot after they announce Wolf. I just wish they did it at the beginning that way either they just do the minimum and announce him as their guy because they liked him or they go through the full process where more people would be genuinely interested and you say he's the best of the bunch. This just comes off as, "we like him and a number of execs we wanted to talk to said no after we just let him make franchise altering decisions". Not rhetorical, when was the last time a GM was hired after the off-season?

Not rhetorical, when was the last time a GM was hired after the off-season? Per reports people are still interested. Like Kraft said focus on free agency, the draft and evaluate the people they have. You don't hire Wolf in the beginning because it takes time away from free agency and the draft, which is the reason Kraft said they didn't do it. Now I will agree if they hire a GM not named Wolf, this is criminal by Kraft. I do not expect that, so I have zero issues with it. Actually I think it was very smart. He had his GM, didn't want to waste a few weeks on a GM search just to name Wolf GM. We'll see if Kraft was right long-term, but he clearly had his post Bill plan in place.

I trust Kraft completely. He’s not always right, but I bet he’s one of the smartest owners in the league. He will do just fine. Our next great team is only a year away.

I don't believe that at all about taking time away. All the following teams made GM hires. Panthers - January Chargers - February Raiders - January Commanders - January I find it strange those teams all got it done without it impacting their offseasons. It's not like the Patriots did anything other than sign their own internal guys. I don't agree with that at all. Even as you mentioned, it would be criminal by Kraft to hire anyone else at this point so he basically already locked himself into Wolf anyways. Now, I think some of the declines are stemming from a belief it's just Wolf's job anyways. Still, non-story until they hire someone else. It's just eyebrow raising seeing they've met the requirements and are still taking the process seriously and trying to meet with other execs. I know if I were a GM with clout I take that job in January/February/Match, but would decline in May. I want Wolf to have this job at this point as this is the team he built and there's a vision in place. I had no opinion of him before the off-season.

I don't see the problem, Wolf is more than qualified. You could literally say that's why he was brought in years ago. I'm surprised, but how smoothly things have worked out shows they had a plan. I certainly like that. No other GM would have been thrilled with having a new coach in place before he was hired. I like what Wolf has done coach wise, free agency and the draft. We got Drake Maye, kept the D intact and will still have money to spend next year. Went crazy on offense to build around Maye. Four WR take last 2 drafts is what this team has needed for years! While retaining our own best players. Frankly the bigger worry for me is Mayo is kinda raw for a coach and might need some time. Why getting the experienced Van Pelt was a great move. Yeah I'm a Patriots homer but it certainly feels like by next year we'll be a team on the up and up with a bright future. Did I mention we got Drake Maye?

Why do we love making negative stories wherever possible?

Giants with the Long Con, end up with the Patriots QB they REALLY wanted... Another team who had to spend big capital on TWO fallback options in case the Patriots saw the light and kept Rourke.

Numbers are important. Jaheim Bell chose wrong, but I'm supportive of the rest.
Also it's very early to declare it, but I hope some day May 10th is amusingly meaningful as Maye Day (Maye 10 = May 10th? Get it? Is that a thing? If he's good, it could be a thing...)

I haven't been this excited to see guys playing in shorts on a football Fields in a long time. Pictures of Maye talking with two new rookie WR equals the future.

Polk, Baker, Douglas . . . and I'm the idiot who still thinks Tyquan Thornton could add something as a 4th WR (I'll never learn).
Of course, he's highly unlikely to make the team given he doesn't play special teams and has Bourne in front of him and additional competition from a decent KO returner (who has done as much if not more at WR) and another talented (albeit, potentially, troubled) young guy.
EDIT Maybe not HIGHLY but he has a climb.

I hope I'm wrong because we could use a big speed guy, but I'd say Thornton is highly unlikely at this point to make the team. He basically has to jump 3 players out of Osborn, Juju, Reagor and Boutte. Now let's hope I'm dead wrong because I really want him to succeed, I've just seen absolutely nothing from him.

He’s new mythical baller Jacked Thornton now, this is my new narrative I'd be more excited if he spent his time working on his hands to catch those deep passes and his horrible route running. Polk and Baker will now handle contested catches. Thornton needs to work on his cuts and breaks, because he's so bad at them he losses speed and can struggle to get open. Nevermind work on his 2nd gear on long catches, a 4.2 speed guy should be able to run under those passes and he's never been able to do that. One advantage of a whole new offensive coaching staff is we can hope they can finally get through to him. While also having him run slant routes, the best routes he ran on his college tape! Not just WR coach either, new OL coach might be the most important.

Wasn't even considering JuJu bc o thought (and still do) consider him a candidate to move somehow.
TTs best chance is if Boutte is suspended to start and Bourne isn't healthy.
Osborne could also be a "sign him in case the draft/camp doesn't go as expected" type of deal

It's an interesting debate do they carry 5 or 6 WRs? How do Gibson and Bell play into this? Both can do multiple things, including playing out wide. Just looking at all sides, maybe the keep an extra RB or TE because of those two, maybe not. I bring this up because we do have a defensive coach.
Bourne, Douglas, Polk and Baker are 100% locks. I'd rate them by chances right now Osborn, Juju, Reagor, Boutte and then Thornton. I'd say it's one or the other with Osborn and Juju unless a bunch of injuries happen, which does make Juju chances of making the team rather low. Until we find out the legal crap with Boutte I can't move him higher. He'd probably be #2 if no legal issues given upside and ability to play multiple positions. YAC should also be important in our new offense. So if you want another X WR it's down to Reagor versus Thornton, Reagor was clearly better last year. He looks about as fast as Thornton, 42" vertical, much more experience and still has upside. So Thornton really has his work cutout for him this year.
Like always play in preseason, chemistry with two new QBs, quickness/fit in new offense and injuries will play a huge role. Plus WR blocking in the new system, a big reason I have Juju rated so high. Another reason I brought up Bell, not an in line blocker, but can be a good down the field blocker on running plays.
I do wonder if Bill was still here is they would try Bell out as a hybrid fullback, but new OC uses extra lineman over FBs.

I think that gives him a jump on anyone else. Also has $3.2m guaranteed. Gimme him as WR5 Interesting to see team building philosophy with new management; what do they prioritize between experience and potential? What kind of balance do they want? What kind of redundancy? We typically get 14-15 skill position offense. Guarantees are 2QB/3RB/5WR/2TE (which puts us at 12). New emergency QB rules make it okay to keep the third QB on the practice squad (instead of active roster). I like having 4 RB (get worried about injuries), and I like Bell as TE3 (Hooper has $2.4M guaranteed which makes him a decent lock). That's 14. Based on current roster makeup, a 6th WR among the above makes more sense than 4th TE or 5th RB or 3rd QB if you want a 15th skill player. Reagor for vet presence/kick return? Boutte as high risk/reward? Juju since we have to pay him anyway ($10m in dead cap, $600K savings if cut post-June 1)? JuJu looked cooked and I worry about Boutte, so I'd lean Reagor with new kickoff rules.

We currently have no clue given the complete new offense and the fact they currently have a lot of say. Mayo did say he wanted Boutte to reach his potential, while also having him grow as a man. I like a lot of what you said, I think Milton to practice squad is the perfect place for him, yet as others have pointed out he likely gets claimed. Don't have a problem with Reagor, might be the best option for QBs that like to go deep and we have no idea how quickly the rookie WRs adjust. Boutte and Thornton on practice squad would be a nice deep team.
