How does everyone feel about Nix? And could he make it to #34? Excerpt from this morning's Brugler mock: "The NFL feedback on Nix is interesting. Some believe he can sneak his way into the top 25, while others see him as a third-rounder. The reality probably will fall somewhere in the middle. Nix, who was born two months after the Patriots hired Belichick, understands where to go with the football, and his scrambling can give defenses fits." Big throws, his scrambling gives defenses fits. Bo Nix is the 2nd coming of Steve Grogan! lol

Who thought the 2022 draft was great after the first year? Yeah I liked the 2023 draft more when it happened and nothing has changed that, but year two is important for many players. I don’t want to get semantical over the word “great” but plenty of people were very happy with the 2022 class after year 1. Reality is I think the 2023 have a chance to be epic but it could also basically suck too. I don’t think it will but let’s just say Gonzales and his frame don’t hold up and he ends up an injury bust. White just ends up a rotation player and Douglas is already at his ceiling and his small frame gets injured a lot. Okay good for those people, I don't see great or Happy after year one when you're top two picks were not close to what you wanted. It only got worse in year two. You still have questions about Strange, Thornton still can't run routes, Marcus got injured, Jack got released, Strong got traded for almost nothing and no one else stepped up. I've argued that draft wasn't a dumpster fire after year one, I just don't see the level you're talking about. I don't think you did either. That's every draft in football though. If Patrick Mahomes blows out his knee and is never the same it greatly changes the Chiefs draft. All we can do is go by what we currently have. Gonzalez was a stud, White was darn solid with flashes, Sow and Mafi flashed, Douglas looks like a HR. Yeah not much from Mapu or Ryland, but I still like Boutte and Bolden. Our Punter was very good for a rookie and fixed his biggest issue year one within inside the 20 punts. Still no clue about Andrews at OC. I'll take drafts like that every year. You are 100% right, we don't know what will happen, but it was value driven at draft time, it hit important areas of need and looked about as good as a draft can in year one given where we picked. Sure I can nitpick a few things, but that goes for every draft.

I’m picking Penix over Nix if it comes to it That's how I feel now, we'll see if I feel the same in a few months after a much deeper dive. I will say I'm highly intrigued by Nix, I actually can't wait to watch his Auburn tape. What I don't see scares me, but it doesn't mean he can't do it either. I really want to love Nix, in today's NFL with our OL he could greatly help. His running sets up him moving outside the pocket to throw, which draws in the safeties or at worst makes them freeze for a second, which in the NFL is huge for WR going downfield. Nix would just make things easier on offense. Senior Bowl is going to be huge this year for me. Heck if Daniels made as many throws on the move outside the pocket like Nix does, I might be considering him at #3. Nix has the better body and way less risky runs that could get him injured. It's a very interesting deep class, 6 QBs worth looking at. I only wish the other two declared and it was an epic draft class.

Six? You need to see Tanner Mordecai throw.

Six? You need to see Tanner Mordecai throw. With 1st/2nd round grades high end QBs types. I'll certainly look at more than 6 QBs total, but I didn't have Tanner on my list. Then again it's crazy early, I'll adjust it over the coming months. My focus now is on trying to find a franchise QB, not developmental QBs. So why do I need to watch him throw, compared to guys like Rattler or Milton? Who are both on my list as two of the more physically gifted QBs in the draft. You a Wisconsin or SMU fan?

So I look forward to seeing him at the combine or Senior Bowl or wherever he shows up next.

He was actually rather horrible until that game, 9 games before that like 1,600 yards and 6 TDs. I wonder if he even gets invites to combine and senior bowl. I've added him to my list, but the guy might not even be drafted.

There is no excuse to not retain him, they have plenty of cap. And also can’t they franchise him? Would be totally ridiculous

Poach someone from the Kyle Shanahan tree for OC if there is anybody good left.

McDaniels has a way with QB’s. He’s good at developing them. He was also Brady’s OC. If he doesn’t join BB, I could see him here in that role. I wonder what Mayo thinks.

I really like McDaniels, but he needs someone to bitch slap him when he gets too cute. Is Mayo that guy? Bill was that guy, but Bill was the GOAT.

Wes Welker experience under those coaches and those OC is impressive. Just comes down to what type of Offense Mayo wants.
I would actually love to see McDaniels as OC without Bill getting in the way. Maybe Mayo would let him do things like go for it on more 4th downs. Not always try to run out the clock with running. If he is willing to come back, you do it all day long

Been thinking about Round 2 WR if we go QB at 3.
I've liked Brian Thomas but not sure if he falls out of the first round. Some have him as #4. Troy Franklin, Polk, Tez Walker and Xavier Leggett are intriguing to me, not clear they'd be #1 guys but it'd be nice to have someone that profiles above a #4 WR... I didn't like Ladd McKonkey, Xavier Worthy, or AD Mitchell as much as draftnicks. Never consistently stood out in the games I watched. Keon Coleman is #4 for some, 2nd round for others. He looked very trick-or-treat and I'd rather someone more consistent.
Malachi Corley fits some recent success profiles, and might fall into the 3rd? Someone has to since there are so many intriguing options this year. It's really fat at the top AND in the middle, which is rare. Unless we get a FA QB, I'd be really disappointed if we don't come out with a WR and a QB in the top 3 rounds.

Seems like sports radio is running with the report that Onwenu will be gone. Furious.

ESPN top 103, I used to love this done by Todd McShay, not sure who's doing it now. Using it now to just look at the strength of the draft per position. Tops WR 16 players, CB 15, DT 12, OT 11, DE/OLB 9, RB 7, QB 6, TE 6, ILB 5, OG 4, OC 4.
So it's a good draft for our needs outside TE, but as Mobaz points out a ton of WR talent.
The Onwenu article is basically just an opinion piece, only factual information is not much contract talk. The thing is we are replacing the GM, so that's rather normal. I might use the transition tag on Onwenu, Franchise tag could be about 20 million and usually players hate it. In a perfect world you'd want them to bang this out before free agency. You have to keep Onwenu, your task of nailing a QB, LT, TE and WR is hard enough.

You have to keep Onwenu, your task of nailing a QB, LT, TE and WR is hard enough. I'm not sure I agree. Clearly, sports radio likes to sensationalize and they could very easily be wrong. With that said, this is the kind of stuff I would be doing as an owner if I knew I wasn't going to retain a player. I would leak it early, get the general public used to the idea and then when it happens there's less upheaval because the thought has been planted. Or, if they see too much blowback maybe they take another look at the situation. He's a great lineman who is going to make big dollars. The Patriots already don't have a LT and to allow an upper echelon RT walk out the door when you have some of the most cap space to spend? That's inexcusable, unless this coming up year is a true tear down year. Still, I want to refer back to the trade deadline. Same as the Bloom "lets do nothing" deadline I thought that was weird and a telling sign of things to come. I don't think ownership trusted Bill to bring in the right talent to improve and/or didn't want to mortgage the future further when the season was clearly lost and they knew they were going to be replacing him at the top, or were nearing that decision. I think Kraft not commanding Wolf and Groh to trade guys away for assets was irresponsible. If Onwenu does indeed walk it's a failure in maximizing asset value. I suspect they'll use a tag on him, but in a trade I don't think he'll be worth as much. The other collateral damage now being the Patriots are picking 3rd when it could have been 2nd with 1 more loss. If you knew Onwenu or other guys were out of your price target in a lost season, you trade. This whole organization is getting a culture shock with the departure of Bill and the number of FAs and cap space they have.
