I personally think he just doesn’t want to live in Foxboro MA while playing for a rebuilding team I honestly would rather be in New England's position than the Steelers. Year 1 will probably suck, but he's 26 and Pittsburgh is absolutely not winning a ring this year. I prefer Drake Maye to Russell Wilson or Justin Fields over the next 2-4 years...

A) Pittsburgh, while not great, is still better than Foxboro B) I think Pittsburgh is better right now. Going forward is a question mark, all depends on Maye Ultimately Pitt went 10-7 with an awful QB situation. I think Russ throwing to Aiyuk and Pickens is an upgrade over last years situation for them. Meanwhile the Pats were one of the worst teams in the league and have an unproven GM, unproven coach, and unproven QB. Could they end up better than Pittsburgh 3 years from now? Sure. They could also be in the same exact place with different faces at GM/HC/QB

They could also be in the same exact place with different faces at GM/HC/QB For this year, I agree, but I'm very down on Russell Wilson. I don't think he's going to be much better than Brissett and that's not a glowing review of Brissett. I think Drake Maye has a much better chance to be an upper echelon QB than Justin Fields at this point. To be fair, it's a gamble to pick New England, but the Steelers are stuck in "meh". Patriots can very quickly go from "suck" to a real playoff threat, especially with his talents in 2 years. If he were older I'd say go to Pittsburgh.

It's why I think doing well this year is important, showing the league and players you are a team on the rise. If a player doesn't want to be here, you move onto the next guy that becomes available. Per reports he wants to be a Steeler. You have to be excited about the young WRs. Baker and Polk are this years Douglas, while Boutte makes plays every practice and even Thornton is starting to make an impact. Heck a lot of people think Reagor has had a great camp. I would call 49ers and offer up Bourne, for draft pick, player of need, whatever. I want those young guys playing so we know what we have. Can you do 3 team trades in the NFL? Get a pick from the Steelers so they can flop Bourne? I have no clue, but it doesn't need to be a 3 team trade. That in NBA are usually done for salary cap reasons.

I sure hope this doesn't have to do with X exploding about Justin Fields doing things in practice. Some crazy stuff being said right now.

So we get to see how we stack up for the first time tonight. Have a feeling starters play well, but on offense it starts to fall apart with backups, but not on D. Way too excited about the first preseason game!

Zappe in for the third drive. I’m really not liking the Mayo experience so far.

Only now I was able to join in, will we see Maye again? If it’s not Maye or Bazooka Joe I’m not watching this.

I feel like Mayo is giving Zappe a chance to audition for another job.

Is this week 1 of the pre-season? Yes. Does the pre-season matter in evaluating players? No. Will that stop me from over reacting to that Joe Milton pass? Also no.

I feel like Mayo is giving Zappe a chance to audition for another job. The league has over 600 snaps worth of film on him against real NFL competition. I fail to see how a pre-season game is gonna get him a gig.

I fail to see how a pre-season game is gonna get him a gig. I don't see why playing Zappe otherwise. There's some film on him, sure, but still good to get some recency bias and if he looks decent enough he might be good enough to get a 3rd string job elsewhere. I 100% expect him to get cut. Maybe I'm wrong, but letting him try and showcase himself a little before he gets released by the team seems to make some sense to me.

I think Maye playing so little and Zappe so much had to do with poor weather and a crappy line. Why put Maye behind a terrible line, playing with 3rd stringers in the rain?

Brian Hoyer was on the radio just now and mentioned he never wanted to leave the Patriots and mentioned that it happens and when you're in a position like Zappe you're out there auditioning for 31 other teams.

I feel like that's partly the reason, but I feel like Milton would or should get those reps if that was the primary reason. I don't really see the harm though in putting Maye out there for a little longer since he has zero chance of starting. Put him in a simulated game and tell him he's not allowed to leave the pocket and continue to work on the things he needs to work on and get some extra tape on him to review.

Wow, it's not like Zappe played bad! Had multiple drops because of rain, center fumbled a snap, likely reasons he was playing. I really don't get the hate and the little things he does are good for the rookies.
If you really like Joe Milton did you really want him playing early against the Panthers better players or later against lesser ones?
We got to see unfortunately some Baker rounding routes and not adjusting on another. Keep playing him, the talent is clearly there.
Defense was as I expected and the Panthers likely aren't going to be good yet again.

I'd wager after last night's game Patriots could trade Joe Milton for 2025 3rd rounder today, if they wanted. Not that I want that either.
All "against 3rd stringers and insurance salesman" aside, he looked like an NFL QB in his basic tendencies (one delay of game penalty though) and then there's his elite skills on top of that (running, escapability, power throws).
Who doesn't want to see more? Plus, I listened to his postgame presser: he sounded as good as he looked on the field, like a guy who knows he has a mountain to climb, and relishes the challenge.
To think some called his a wasted pick.
