First major signing of the Breslow era lasted about 2 weeks. WTF what a kick in the nuts.

"partially torn" is the phrase you normally get when it's genuinely unclear if the player is going to get surgery or play through it. With his one year + player option contract, the team and player could really be opposed on this.
Brutal all around. Giolito had just about the cleanest bill of health for any pitcher his age. All pitchers are pitchers though. Something to keep in mind the next time there's a player being marketed as super dependable.

Also shows that even durability is no guarantee... Lucas Giolito rarely missed any extended time in his career. This was not signing someone with a rap sheet like list of injury history

Innings! The Red Sox need SP innings!

This is why I only put so much stock in the concept of a "workhorse." Sale and Paxton have both already outlasted Giolito...

I wasn't thrilled with the signing initially, but of course I was trying to be optimistic. Ultimately, I'm not all that heartbroken, though I obviously wish him well in his recovery and regret that this never happened. Sucks for him. Sucks for the team. That's a lot of cash tied up in Giolito and who knows how next year goes in terms of health and effectiveness.
It's a risk you take with any pitcher, but with someone like John Lackey, he was signed for enough years that he was able to bounce back and be a great pitcher after his major injury. We got quite a bit of value from him on the back end and tacked on a minimum salary year, per the contract. We squandered it with a poor trade.

From the Silver Linings Dept.: Better now than a month from now. Isn't there a FA pitcher or two still available to drop into his spot?

I think we can put to bed all the concerns about stretching out Winckowski now. I hope to god they don't sign Montgomery. Just sign a Clevinger or Lorenzen to a one year deal, even if it's a little bit of an overpay.

Montgomery is the obvious option but it's probably worth curbing optimism in signing Montgomery. Again it has to go through John Henry and the sell is going to be even harder to spend $25-30mil.

Cursed.
I think signing Montgomery at this point wouldn’t make sense. They can’t compete this year after this.

Please just punt on this season and don’t make any rash moves that will restrict team flexibility for ‘25-‘26. In a strong no on the sign Monty idea now. Play the kids!

I’d think Lorenzen would be a higher probability than Monty. Him or Clevinger.

I just think it’s going to take a larger commitment than that to secure Monty.

While I was optimistic Giolito would eat innings and do relatively decent, I never figured he'd be a # 1 or 2 type of starter. Is this injury good for the outlook of the season? Nope. That being said it doesn't really change my opinion on their chances that much. If this team is going to be good it likely wasn't going to be because Giolito was their best starter. If this team is going to be good it is because Bello takes a step forward, Pivetta proves his 2nd half wasn't a fluke and one of Houck/Whitlock prove to be legit starters. None of this has changed at this point to me.
I'm not ready to pull the plug on this team right now. Like I said not good news but I also don't find losing Giolito as some death knell for the year.

I... I honestly had hope for this season. If for no reason other than baseball is supposed to be fun, and winning is more fun than losing, and hoping to win is more fun than being miserable about something that hasn't even happened yet. But this burst my bubble. I am burst.
This season is now fantasy baseball for me. Individual performances matter more than team outcomes. I wanna see Devers kick ass, and Rafaela burst onto the scene, and Grissom blossom, and Bello carve out as a future #2, and Anthony and Mayer start knocking on the door, and one or two of the #4/5/6 starter types have plannable futures.

I doubt this makes John Henry any more interested in adding to this club now. Double whammy is that silly player option is going to eat into their 2025 budget now too. Cherry on top of a frustrating winter and spring.

April 28th will be a good inflection point to see SP and bullpen workload. They start the season with a 10 game West Coast trip and play 29 games by April 29th with only 3 days off. Penciling in Giolito for 6IP was essential.

This is disappointing. I like Lucas and enjoyed watching him this spring. I was looking forward to his starts. I feel bad for him, too. I really thought he’d have a good year.
