Is being named the Portland Defensive Player of the Year almost meaningless? Or did Portland just have a collection of butchers?
My read on it is they rewarded him for his versatility and for handling being thrown into different spots when guys were out, not necessarily that he excelled there. Didn't David Hamilton win this last year?

(But I think the point in the last paragraph about roster inefficiency is also right; the fact that the Red Sox have to push Duran to LF to accommodate Rafaela is arguably a reason to trade Rafaela.) [/div][/quote] Appreciate the hypothetical nature, but even in a scenario with Cedanne traded you could still have Anthony/Abreu/TON/Masa to play the corners and DH, and we'd be moving KC off his best/preferred position for two presumably worse defenders in Hamilton and Grissom? (Or doing some out of position stuff if Mayer is ready which I doubt will happen to start the season.) We've had a hole at second since injuries caught up to Pedey, and I appreciate positional flexibility but I like good infield defense more, if he's the best defensive second baseman and he's most comfortable at second I kinda just want to play him 90% of the games at second and Anthony 90% of the games in a corner OF spot.

I definitely don't presume Campbell would be a better defensive second baseman than Hamilton. I presume the opposite in fact.

Didn't David Hamilton win this last year? You and others are thinking of the defensive player of the year for the whole farm system. Which, yes, has been entirely meaningless at times in the past. The example I always come back to is Ryan Lavarnway winning it at a time when we all were wondering if he even could stick at catcher. As far as the Sea Dogs team awards, I'm sure the team was factoring in the fact he was moving all over the diamond. Literally nobody is saying he's a bad defender. I also don't know if there were any defensive studs there this year. The infield defense was pretty rough at times there.
