They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

Max Fried is an interesting potential FA target for the offseason

I like Max Fried because all good pitchers should be named after cook settings.

For a .500 season I have not found 2024 the least bit boring. So many young guys getting better is fun. Sweeping the Braves would be a real feel good burst of team excitment. Hope they do it !!@

Speir on the team's approach to in-season player development. As you'd expect, they've got a system. The Sox aren’t simply paying lip service to developing players in the big leagues. They’ve created a formal structure for assessing and addressing players’ developmental needs. Every week, members of the front office and coaching staff meet to discuss three to four pitchers and an equal number of position players. Every player is discussed at least once a month. The participants include chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and other front office members (assistant general managers and assistant director of analytics Dave Miller); Cora and members of the coaching staff (depending on whether a pitcher or position player is being discussed); and members of the medical, strength and conditioning, and nutrition departments. So, for instance, if a player is struggling with range to his left, what do the numbers say about the severity of the problem? What’s at the root of the struggles? Is it a strength issue creating a lack of first-step explosiveness? Is it a pre-pitch routine or initial movement on the first step? www.bostonglobe.com/2024/06/03/sports/red-sox-young-players-instruction/

Speier understands this systemic, granular approach; a genuine go to guy.
In this vein, the Sox have been playing with 5 or more rookies each game for a while now. And they are developing well.
Wouldn’t it be nice to see some healthy version of this young lineup in Atlanta: Duran, Grissom, Devers, Casas, Abreu, Wong, Yoshida, Rafaella, Hamilton? Ref, Valdez on the bench.
But 3 of them will still be sitting alongside Story, O’Neill, Whitlock, Giolito, Mata & Co. IMO we can be happy with and proud of the development of these kids and this team. And confident in Breslow and his brain trust.

Sox beat reporters are saying Heineman is being called up and more moves are coming.
The injuries on this team have primed my first reaction to be bracing for awful news.

Abreu on the IL due to spraining his ankle walking down the dugout stairs is pretty brutal

also obviously they wouldn't do this but the most fun call up option would have been Lugo

You'd think, but it might not be done quite so formally league-wide, with all the top people involved and that level of specificity. Given travel schedules and such, I could see many teams leaving it the manager and the immediate coaching staff to handle that sort of granular stuff. Meetings take time and intentionally carving that out for every player may not be quite as common as one would think. Just applying my own experience in an unrelated field, I have monthly status meetings with some bigger clients, but fairly frequently they have to bump those meetings and it ultimately ends up just being a memo or email. I could see the equivalent being common for player dev of "established" guys in many orgs.

Duran cf Ref lf Wong c Devers 3b Westbrook 2nd Cooper dh Dalbec rf Smith 1b Ceddanne ss I don’t want to give Atlanta any free advice, but the only pitches to Devers they should throw are probably 29 feet outside with who’s behind him
