Personally I hope Breslow is using this series to lube Preller up to send us something the Padres will regret for Jansen What kind of return do you (or anyone else who wants to jump in) have in mind for Kenley A few comps from the 2023 trade deadline based on this fangraphs list (with fangraphs FV ratings):
Graveman: White Sox got Korey Lee (50) Robertson: Mets got Marco Vargas (45+) and Ronald Hernandez (40) Hicks: Cardinals got Robberse (45) and Kloffenstein (40)
None of the above trades have aged all that well for the sellers. And but then there's the Royals getting Cole Ragans for Aroldis Chapman.

Some arm(s) who aren't big prospects but Breslow and co particularly like. I know Sandlin had some helium toward the end of last year and into the offseason but he wasn't all that highly regarded.

He sure blossomed!
The Red Sox are getting to the point of having more position players than they can fit on the roster, but the organizational pitching still seems a little thin? I like that model, a ML ready arm with potential if not a record of ML success. That's how the Red Sox got Pivetta.

Or maybe the Padres get dumb and send a 50 level guy which is why I keep mentioning Preller. Basically I’m thinking there might be a decent SP prospect who is either already on a 40 man or will need to be added that we could get

The Pivetta and Ragans trades are exactly what we can hope for here (obviously not expecting a Ragans level outcome, but’s that’s the general direction I hope for)

[/quote] It’s still honestly kinda nuts that literally less than like a month in to the trade Cole Ragans was already better than Chapman. (I know the Royals made tweaks with him but still.) Like he might have been a more reliable lefty flamethrower out of the pen than Chapman was! Flags fly forever but still…

Actually that’s how the Sox got Connor Seabold who was seen as the main piece in that trade. Pivetta was a 27 yr old coming off a terrible season that was a headache the Phillies wanted to get rid of. Seabold entered the system as the 9th best prospect. He was Sandlin or Fitts before there was a Sandlin or Fitts. i suspect the Sox would be targeting Seabolds more so than Pivettas at this deadline too.

Getting a legit SP prospect (or any other position) sounds cool, but if you hurt your chances in 2024 by moving like Kenley and O’Neill only to net with some Connor Seabolds (the end result, not his initial potential), that’s not a great outcome. Sometimes I wonder if we’ve been spoiled by the Christian Vasquez return. For every Wilyer Abreu (2 career WAR through 87 MLB games already!) and Emmanuel Valdez, there’s a Potts and Rosario. I get the logic of buying-and-selling at the deadline, but there’s doing that in theory and then there’s your first year GM executing that over strategy over the span of 72 hours in late July.

I think it's relevant that the trade for Abreu/Valdez was made because the return was so impressive. Whereas Potts/Rosario were the return for basically a 1 WAR platoon first baseman so it's not like expectations ought to have been high there. Jansen, O'Neill, and Pivetta all certainly ought to be worth more than Moreland (or, frankly, Vazquez) was on the trade market.
In principle, I think something like the 2022 trade deadline approach would be ideal: set a high asking price for all of these guys; if someone meets the price, sell, and if no one does, don't.

I could see Texas trading Scherzer before Eovaldi. They have a good team on paper and I don’t think they would deal someone like Nate under contract for next year. Mets picked up a ton of Scherzers money so he’ll be appealing to a lot of teams.

Yorke and Early for Nate, would we do it and if so how would we align our rotation? Houck - Eovaldi - Crawford - Bello - Criswell With Pivetta as a dominant reliever , or Houck - Eovaldi - Crawford - Bello - Pivetta, with Criswell as AAA depth? Are you thinking the Rangers dump Semian so they can play Yorke? Why would this make sense for the Rangers?

Apparently Nate has a vesting option for next year that is innings dependent - at the moment it seems unlikely to vest.

I think you might need to do better than Early, maybe someone with a bit more buzz like Monegro..

He's my personal #1 target. Cost shouldn't be prohibitive and he's young enough that if he's successful you can try to extend him/resign him in the winter.

In the latest podcast Ian threw out Reid Detmers as a potential target and I would love if Breslow were able to get him. He's having a down year by his standards but he's been solid the last few years, sits 94 and throws 4 pitches. He turns 25 in a week and is about to enter arbitration. The Angels have already shed a lot of payroll but their farm system is bad enough that he might be able to be had for a reasonable cost.

I really hope boston sells if they are more than 2GB. Having another deadline where they dont sell just to fade in Aug feels like a complete waste.
Oneal, pivetta, kenley, Martin etc.

They could wait to see if he rebounds next season and flip him at next year's deadline with 2.5 years of control still attached for a significantly larger haul.

Oneal, pivetta, kenley, Martin etc. I think it depends on what their record is and what some other teams like Tampa and Houston do too. If the Sox are 58-49 then I don't really care how far behind they are or what everyone else it doing, they should go for it. If they're 55-52 then I think you start to consider how far behind they are and how many teams are fighting for that last spot.

Crochet is definitely available, per Bob Nightengale:
“The Chicago White Sox quietly engaged in brief contract extension talks with ace Garrett Crochet, but with no optimism towards reaching an agreement, the White Sox intend to trade him by the July 30 trade deadline.”

If it does, it seems very likely to vest, doesn't it?

But hypothetically speaking if the White Sox ask for something like Anthony/Perales/Yorke, would people want Breslow to pull the trigger? As good as Anthony is I think this farm could take that hit and still be really good. We've still got Mayer/Teel, plus Campbell, Cespedes and Bleis who have major upside. We lost Perales yes but have replaced him with Crochet. I think at the very least Breslow shouldn't hang up the phone if that's the sort of package the White Sox are looking for. Edit: And I know Perales is about to get TJ but I still think he's the best pitching prospect in the system which is why I picked him. Replace with Fitts or Sandlin if you'd like.
