What’s the baseball equivalent of deflating the balls and can we do that with Kutter tomorrow

It would be nice if they can start playing like this at home over the final 8 weeks.

Via Brian Barrett:
“Ragans is a reverse splits guy
V. Lefties
.289 average .720 OPS
.286 against the 4-seamer
V. Righties
.206 average .607 OPS
.180 against the 4-seamer”
Curious how you play this

I've become a big Dom Smith fan. Seems like he's become an important clubhouse guy. Just did a great interview post game. Seems to come up with big hit after big hit.

Got the tiebreaker over KC and Seattle now. Keep it rolling. Mathematically, we are in the third WC spot now, as KC needs to finish a game ahead of us to get in.

There's that 95mph cutter right at the end. A win is a win, another series win, against a team we'll be fighting for the last spot. Now let's get the sweep tomorrow. Merloni called it a four-seamer on radio (with surprise in his voice), FWIW. Kenley went 92, 93, 94, 95 on his last four pitches. First pitch in 8th was 90. Takes him an inning of work to get warm.

Aug. 6: RHP Liam Hendriks throws first live BP session on mound Hendriks faced live hitters for the first time since his Tommy John surgery on Tuesday in Kansas City. He took the mound in full uniform -- with a majority of his teammates in the dugout watching -- and threw 15 pitches, both fastballs and sliders. It is the first of three or four planned live BP sessions, with the next scheduled for Saturday if Hendriks recovers well.
Hendriks, a three-time All-Star, returned to the White Sox in 2023 after his battle with cancer and appeared in five games with Chicago, but has not pitched in the big leagues since. The Red Sox signed him to a two-year, $10 million dollar deal this offseason. He is targeting a September return to the big leagues if his live sessions and rehab assignment thereafter with Triple-A Worcester go well.
"The elbow is coming along well," Hendriks said. "Now it's just a matter of building that strength up and continuing that progression forward. ... The main thing now, my goal is just to be able to throw as much as I can."

Huge win. Obviously they got the potential tie breaker. If they win they overtake KC. If they lose they're still only 1.5 games out with 50 games to go.
The play of the game was Smith somehow getting in safely at the plate and then the 2 run single by Yoshida.
Garcia almost gave the game away in the 8th. I didnt like having to see Hansen getting used for that extra out in the 8th and if Cora goes to that well once too often theyll get badly burned, but that said tonight was a good night to so it. They needed that game.
And that was the best Jansen has looked in weeks. His pitches has better finish to them, especially that last pitch to Witt.

My feeling is that the next time through the rotation - particularly Bello, Pivetta, Houck and Crawford - is really important. I think Paxton will be a stabilizing presence - but the rest need to fight through whatever wall they are currently at. If we can get the starting pitching back on track, we should be in great position to cement a playoff spot - particularly with the hitting we are getting.

Mariners are also losing through 7, outside of us and the Astros every other team that is a playoff contender either didn't play or lost today, that is huge. Taking 2 of 3 of the Royals is already a win and a sweep would be huge as we're just 0.5 back now, and we have games in hand on them which is even more important with the difficult stretch that we're in.

Booser threw each of last 3 games and 4 of 5. Almost certainly the move for Martin, right? I’m sure he’ll be back but kind of a bummer. Guess they are only optioning good pitchers at this point

The Mariners lost - the following are the current playoff odds (FanGraphs, which did figure in Boston's win tonight)
Red Sox 51.6 Royals 50.7 Mariners 56.2 (prior to the loss) Houston 50.4
Minnesota is at 86.3 but they have a tough schedule coming up and are only 1.5 games up on KC. I think they will join the fray too.
This is going to be an epic end to the season.

Would like to see the next starts for Houck and Crawford to only go twice thru the order. Maybe give them a starter so they could still get the win.

damn a's, can't do anything right. also, tigers finished the job, though they looked shaky against the mariners for a bit there Would like to see the next starts for Houck and Crawford to only go twice thru the order. Maybe give them a starter so they could still get the win. i am convinced that the second we get to september they go to a six man rotation, be that with criswell, priester, or even fitts. it just makes too much sense given how exhausted they are.

Sweep, no sweep, doesn't matter as long as we keep it rolling.
