Nightmare scenario. Potential situations like this is why I graded the Sox trading deadline a C. I wanted 2 starters. They got 2 starters. Getting lit up in Woo. 2 starters for the ML team

I like the idea of adding SP depth in a vacuum, but not so much when it's mediocre vets who have to stay on the 26-man. Either sign guys who are rotation locks and build depth by pushing guys down the depth chart, or sign Criswell types who have options and can build depth on the back end.
Right, I always laugh when that comes up. I mean, where do they put this magical "starting pitching depth?" Are there special separate rules that only apply to the Sox? Because they began with Giolito, Pivetta, Houck, Bello, Crawford, Whitlock, Winckowski and Murphy. Then they grabbed Criswell to stash in AAA and Anderson as a break-glass long man. Plus some fliers. That's enough, even with bad luck (which we had) for a credible rotation. But I guess we should have signed some ML starters and just stuck 'em in the ether until needed? Like maybe 4 of 'em or something?

I agree that Wong shouldn't be hitting that high in an ideal world, but if we treat the 3 hole as the 5th most important spot in the lineup, I don't hate him there today. It also breaks up the wall of LHH and makes it more optional to PH. He's been about league average against RHP on the year and has flipped splits for his career. Could be worse with TON and Devers out. I wouldn't necessarily call it a trivial difference given the OBP differences between Yoshida, Wilyer, and Valdez. It's not a massive handicap, but it's not nothing, and it's just free production. I can't see Valdez being more comfortable at #2, if it's a comfort thing. If anything #5 seems like it takes some pressure off. If we need to break up the lefties at the top of the order with a righty (not sure we do with Jansen, Refsnyder, and Romy on the bench) then I'd rather do it with Rafaela, who has been a much better hitter for a while now and also adds some power.
On the other hand if they want to keep Rafaela at the bottom of the order for comfort reasons then that is totally fine but I am also not going to get worked up about whether Valdez is 2, 3, 4, or 5.
It's an interesting idea to move up Rafaela and I don't hate it at all - his ABs can be ugly but he has indeed been producing.

Like maybe 4 of 'em or something? There was this guy, I think his name was Lugo, who a lot of us wanted the team to sign and try to bolster the rotation even after Giolito. That would have helped. They didn’t want to spend, although Criswell has been better than I thought.

So we get a pick if Rafaela wins ROY right?

The seventh and eighth men on the spring training depth chart have combined to give them 85 innings of 3.6 ERA pitching across 19 starts. Depth has not been the issue with the pitching staff, the issue has been that the presumed #1 and staff workhorse tore his UCL in spring training.

So we get a pick if Rafaela wins ROY right? Yep. And no one gets a pick if Abreu wins ROY.

Valdez had a golden opportunity this year and had his worse year since his breakout year when we traded for him

Valdez had a golden opportunity this year and had his worse year since his breakout year when we traded for him He has a .327 xwOBA on a .258 BABIP. Sans the wOBA-xwOBA gap he'd be around a 110 wRC+.
Though given his defensive/positional/platoon limitations that still might not be enough to cement a major league role for him.

Cora pushing Bernardino to 2+ and innings pitching because he has no other choice. They just started a stretch of 27 games in 27 days. The bullpen management will be an interesting/impossible puzzle to solve.

You need 2 top of the rotation starters next year. The pitching has failed the Sox again. Sign Max Fried to 5 or 6 years (he was a Red Sox fan growing up), and trade for Sandy Alcantara. Max freid is a terible idea. Will instantly be a bad contract in AL east I don't see any other good options. Corbin Burns will cost 300 million dollars. We see how well that's turning out by year 3 or 4 of the Cole deal with Yankees right now.

Great option to have waiting in AAA or in a trade though. Need guys like him to get through a season.

Oh cool, a HR right after strike three.
I hope this ump gets a ripping case of jock itch.
