Interesting: Bobby Dalbec is 14 days younger than Dom Smith
He also continues to play for the Red Sox organization

If Smith had options or something that would be one thing. Not sure if this is optimizing though? Even if your reason for keeping Gasper up and cutting Smith is to use Wong more at first or second, that seems like it’s just going to put more wear and tear on Wong who has already looked like different player in the second half than the first. Smith hadn’t been playing well recently, either, so I’m not super torn up on the move over all. My main point was just to remark on the continued presence of Bobby Dalbec, who really ought to be set free

I think less of the organization for this move. Character matters, and that applies to organizations, too.

So are we just going to spend the next month and a half watching to see if Devers grimaces and reaches for his shoulder, if Casas grimaces and reaches for his side, and if O’Neill grimaces and reaches for his brand new wooden leg

Kind of shocking we are even in the position we are given how many black holes we've had as the season has gone on. I liked Dom Smith and wanted him to stick around; he filled a black hole (eventually after contributing to it for a bit) and became a positive. Hope on his way out the door he reminds Casas to "Earn this..."

Dalbec will be gone either when they need to make spots for Rule 5 or next season probably in spring training. Guy has no options after this year, be patient.

I have a sinking feeling that Casas is gonna re-aggravate that rib injury and we’re gonna be stuck watching Dalbec do his best impersonation of a big league hitter again in September as we fall out of the wild card race

I'm not a big fan of the move, even though statistically I don't think shedding Dom moves the needle one way or another. He was a good veteran voice in that young clubhouse. I also don't think Casas and O'Neil are the panacea everyone thinks they will be, O'Neil has been well below his historical defensive contributions which makes his bat have to be even more impactful, and Casas was pretty terrible all last year defensively, so if he struggles to get his timing the Sox have a problem.
We shall see I guess.

Dalbec would not be on the 40 if they needed another spot for anything at all.

The Red Sox are getting back one of their best hitters who is a LHH first baseman. Dom Smith is a LHH first baseman who is not a good hitter. He seems like a nice guy so it's a little bit sad, but how is this not the completely obvious move?

Apparently Orioles are calling up lefty starter Cade Povich to start tomorrow, and moving Suarez back a day

For all the mourners, there's been much made of the July heater, but Dom only has a 64 wRC+ in August. He seems like an good clubhouse guy and provides a bit more insurance against a Casas relapse, but that's not enough when positionally he makes little sense. It's really hard to have three lefties who are 1B/DH only on the same roster.
Edit: Odds he's in pinstripes by next week?
