Got some tickets for tonight’s game a while ago on the hope the Red Sox may still be fun to watch late in the season. Glad I was right about that, and excited to see Casas back for the first time since April

Was just last week, after the 4 series win, that the boys were like 50 percent to make playoffs. We are talking 2 games, really 1 with the wild Card for KC. The Stros sweep hurt. But they rebounded against Texas, even though the last game put me back in time warp to game 5 of the 1986 World Series. You can't like the bullpen, for sure. But if we can stay healthy, we should be in it when the last week is being played. Stay the course. If we can get a nice 10 out of 12, that would sure help. There's a better chance the Sox finish below .500 than to make the playoffs. The pitching staff is running on fumes and it's only mid-August with no viable reinforcements in sight.Criswell (likely returning tonight), Hendriks (starts rehab assignment on Sunday), Slaten (ETA late August if he doesn't have a setback), and Booser (unsure, but likely at least a couple weeks before he's back) will all likely get meaningful innings down the stretch. Hill is another likely option.
The pitching staff is important but it's less than half of the equation. Improving on offense and defense is another way to win games, and Casas (likely tonight), TON (likely Sunday or Monday), and maybe even Story (probably sometime in September) will be coming back too.

Transaction prediction: Criswell activated, Shugart optioned. Casas activated, Gasper optioned, and DFA Heineman

Transaction prediction: Criswell activated, Shugart optioned. Casas activated, Gasper optioned, and DFA Heineman That sounds about right to me. I think when TON is ready to come back it's gotta be Smith, though. Assuming he doesn't want to join the pen full time of course.
I would love to keep up Shugart and drop a guy like Horn, but I'm expecting them to sacrifice Shugart at the altar of the L/L.

I wonder if they try to keep Don around because the Casas injury and rehab is still kind of sketchy. I don’t love the idea of Romy as our 1B back-up. Slightly tangential, but does anyone think Devers is going to be IL’d soon? He’s looking really rough, both with his numbers and his reactions at the plate lately.

Probably will be Sogard that will get optioned with TON is ready. Can’t afford to part with Dom right now as Casas is going to have to babied. A note that a 40 man spot can be opened up with the Paxton injury, too.

Bernardino now listed as the starter. Curious if Criswell is piggybacking or if we’re gonna see Winck (I hope not).

A note that a 40 man spot can be opened up with the Paxton injury, too. Why is Casas going to have to be babied? Playing through pain does not imply sitting frequently, especially if playing is not expected to make the injury worse and sitting is not expected to make the injury better. Dom has 84 games in Boston and has put up a 95 wRC+. He had a hot streak a couple weeks ago but he's been back to normal (read: merely playable) lately. If Casas needs to rest, I am fine with Wong or Romy there. They have speed and more versatility, and they also make more sense to pair with a LHH starter.

Not so much babied, but more if he gets hurt again. It would be super shortsighted to let Dom go when he’s been giving something like .850 OPS play since the end of June. Using Wong is risky as if he goes down, you lose your primary catcher. And I think we’ve seen enough of what it looks like when Romy is there defensively.

Pain management could easily mean giving him a day here and there, especially with the lack of many off days the rest of the way.
When O'Neill comes back, it's probably Sogard down (it's been fun, but he still has a sub-.600 OPS...), with O'Neill pushing Rafaela back into the infield. But let's get there first I guess.

Just as we all predicted!
Does this mean they have zero concerns about Casas? I hope so.

I want Smith around for a few reasons.
He's there in case Casas injures himself again.
He is a legit 1b. Romy's failure to stretch fir the throw like a 1b helped to cost them a game.
I like having a LH bat on the bench if need be.
Often we'll see the heavily slanted lefty lineup in against a righty starter.
Then inevitably the opposing manager will put in a lefty to try to force Abreu or Hamilton our if the game for Refsnyder or Romy, but then as Cora plays that chess match sooner or later a RH setup man or closer winds up the game and the Sox are stuck not being able to PH for their righty bats, so it's nice to have a lefty bat off the bench in Smith available.

Are the players going to hold a candle light vigil like they did for Plawecki in 2022?

Never mind. The Red Sox dont agree with my POV on this. I would have kept Smith. Casas better not miss any time as they dont have any legit experienced 1b to back him up. Dont like this move.

Did they do the Wolverine adamantium treatment with Triston’s ribcage? Does the Dom Smith DFA mean we don’t have to worry about it now?

Wong is the 1B backup not Romy I hope. Especially while Gasper is up, probably. They must like that Gasper allows them to do more with Wong while not using that roster spot on a pure "third catcher?"

Hopefully Casas is able to push through it and play everyday or thereabouts the rest of the way and it doesn't matter but boy I really don't like DFA'ing Dom right now. They may regret that one if that rib flares up. Feels like they could have found a way to keep Dom on the roster until they got a better idea on Casas and those ribs.
