Puk was a deadline addition for Arizona. He has an 0.75 ERA and FIP of about 1.00 for them. He has shut down the Red Sox in the series. Sims and Garcia were the deadline additions for the Red Sox. They have performed... not as well. Like I've said a few times - Erceg was available cheap. He would have been a good fit. I am sure there are other options we could have had.

Question, Red Sox fan friends - would you rather they just collapse so don't have dashed expectations for more weeks - or keep playing this "maybe they make it, maybe they don't" game for the coming weeks? If they fall out of it, I am rooting for the success of individual players, particularly who I deem "expendable" via trade over the next ~12 months, both @ MLB and MiLB level. Specifically: Wilyer Abreu David Hamilton Allan Castro Mikey Romero Enmanuel Valdez Blaze Jordan Upgrading the pitching staff is the biggest question in how far they will go in '25 and beyond. I want our most logical trade assets to end the season strong. That will be worth rooting for no matter what happens in the playoff race. EDIT: My 2nd rooting interest would be strong finishes (relatively speaking) from Yoshida, Story, and Grissom. I do not expect any of them to be moved this off-season, but do not envision any of the 3 in the team's ideal long-term plan. I want all 3 entering the off-season healthy and ready to bounce back in 2025. They are all too talented and/or expensive to be moved at current market value.

garcia's a weird case, but it didn't take much squinting at his numbers to guess sims had a good chance of sucking

Lucas Sims, folks. Take a long look at Sims and Garcia the rest of this season - if all goes well, they will not be here next year. To be fair, .020 xBA on the homer. Their second of the game that would only be gone in Fenway.

I am half-rooting for them to get swept in the Toronto double-header tomorrow so I can no longer be burdened with the curse of false hope

When does Tyler O’Neil get hits? I’m not sure I’ve seen one for a few weeks he missed 2wks while hospitalized and then returned without any type of rehab and struck out 8 of 15 abs before injuring his finger and missing another handful of games. Really not sure what they are expecting from him. Let him get 10-15 AB's in Worcester so he has half a chance in Boston. as I was saying....lol

So - if Masa didn't try to chug into third, we'd have 6 runs - and it would not have been Sims, probably. So this game would likely be tied.

If Yoshida didn't TOOTBLAN and if O'Neill didn't ATTHLAN* this game would be 6-6.

Got to head for the hammock and chill out with my wife. That was awful. And like so many other losses this year, avoidable.

Sims hasn't been good, but there are signs of life in that his stuff isn't bad. The issue is that he comes out too often without any idea where the plate is. BB/9 is 7.0 so far in Boston.

Stick a fork in them. It's not even September and they're done. Swept 2 straight weekends at unfriendly Fenway. Within a couple of weeks home games will be half empty with road team fans making up a good deal of the attendance. Pathetic.
Wake me up if they win about 10 in a row, or else it no longer matters what they do. They're just playing out the string at this point.
They could have swam during this 10 game stretch or even have treaded water. Instead they have sunk (or should I say stunk?)
Maybe next year they can build a team that actually competes for 6 months rather than 4 or 5, and then the following year a team that competes for 7 months. Boy do I miss the old days. They have fallen from what they had been from 2002 - 2018. It's just about football season so I can turn to watching the ashes of what was football's greatest dynasty. Thank God for the Celtics!

This is so soft. The Sox having any chance to make the playoffs is more important than Feelings. Who cares if our expectations are dashed? That's sports. It happens every year at some point to 29 out of 30 teams.

Been focused on 2025. This season while sometimes entertaining, mostly filled with false hope. As the old saying goes, "you can put lipstick on a pig and call her Racquel" but it is still a pig. Well they been putting lipstick on the pitching staff for years.

As a fan I want them in it as long as possible. Although on a quality of life point, I go on my honeymoon in mid-September. So hyperventilating over the Red Sox as I stream illegally in a European hotel room at 2 am local time is probably not the best way to kick off the marriage Cards take the lead over Twins with 2 outs in the 9th! Thank you Lars Nootbar

Various expressions of the Freudian death drive in this thread aside, Slaten is coming back soon. Hendriks to follow. The offense is still clicking. Bello has looked pretty good lately. Pivetta is capable of going on a run.
We're to the point where they probably need like a 9-1 stretch or something to get back into it. That's inherently unlikely, but I don't think it's beyond the reach of this team.
(And on the other side of things we're now only 2 games ahead of the Rays and it would be pretty embarrassing to finish behind a team that sold off at the deadline.)

Twins lose- still 4.5 back
The Hail Mary for this season remains the 9/20-9/22 three game series vs the Twins at Fenway. On to Toronto
