Predicting The 2025 Opening Day Roster

I know defense and all that but bregman and devers had the same exact fWAR at 4.1. I don't see the point in making bregman an offer in the 150-200M range for a literal sideways move at 3rd base. It's up there as one of the worst ways they could go about using their payroll flexibility at least in my opinion. Unless devers shoulders are absolutely shredded, more than likely he's playing 3rd base opening day.

Bregman's market seems really weak to me. The Astros could use him but they haven't gotten a deal done yet. Who knows how much luxury tax pain they're going to sign up for as the dynasty fades. Tucker and Framber are free agents the year after. Passed that you have the Mariners who could use a 3B but they're a Diamond Sports team. Uhh the Nationals maybe? I'm not seeing many plausible teams

Completely outside the box maybe the orioles see him as a veteran presence who has WS cred to tutor the young guys? Both would seem longshots especially the orioles. Either way it is hard to see a scenario where there's enough suitors to approach a 200M contract.

Boras does this every year. Get an outlandish contract demand in the papers early and then hope people think any deal less than that is an absolute steal. For sure. What this is telling me is the Trevor Story deal isn’t gonna get this one done. I wouldn’t want Bregman on that contract to begin with. The main takeaway I get is that if Alex Bregman is who they end up giving a big contract to, something has gone wrong somewhere, whether in the planning phase or the execution phase.

Yoshida likely to under go shoulder surgery so those of you that wanted to move him, that just got more complicated.

Nationals want middle of the lineup bats, Mets are dropping 150 million this off-season. Probably going to be between them. I wouldn't be shocked if Bregman ended up with closer to 100-150 million than 200 million though.

Uhhh so basically a plurality of the top 10 or so free agents are Boras clients who will be asking for insane deals… while a third of the league have been dropped by their TV broadcast partner Diamond Sports, and another 8 or 9 teams are above the luxury tax?
We might be predicting and brainstorming the 2025 Opening Day Roster for a very, very long time

I think the opening day roster and the playoff roster (fingers crossed) are going to look different next year, but here's my stab at the opening day roster.
SP: Garrett Crochet (traded for Kristian Campbell + Wilyer Abreu + others) SP: Tanner Houck SP: Lucas Giolito SP: Brayan Bello SP: Kutter Crawford
RP: Liam Hendricks RP: Justin Slaten RP: Chris Martin (re-signed to a 1 yr/$10mil deal) RP: Garrett Whitlock RP: Luis Guerrero RP: Zach Penrod RP: Greg Weissert
1. Jarren Duran (CF) 2. Rafael Devers (DH) 3. Luis Robert Jr. (LF) (traded for Kristian Campbell, Wilyer Abreu, + others) 4. Triston Casas (1B) 5. Alex Bregman (3B) (signed to a 5 year/$125mil deal) 6. Trevor Story (SS) 7. Roman Anthony (RF) 8. Connor Wong (C) 9. Vaughn Grissom (2B)
Bench: OF Ceddanne Rafaela OF Rob Refsnyder IF David Hamilton C Danny Jansen (re-signed to a 1 yr/$3mil deal)

I would be pissed if they traded KC and Wilyer for Crochet

I would be pissed if they traded KC and Wilyer for Crochet In fairness to that poster he also included Robert coming back but I have next to no interest in Robert. Guy gets hurt every single year like clockwork. I'd rather just bring O’Neill back then to give up much of a package for Robert.

I would be pissed if they traded KC and Wilyer for Crochet It's probably what it takes to get him though, I've been in the Mayer/Wilyer trade for a pitcher camp personally. Whether it's Crochet or Kirby or someone like that, it's going to cost one of the big four probably. Now, I don't really think Campbell is the guy to give up but I get it.

Including Snell and Eovaldi or no?
I am trying hard to not have an opinion on what they should do, but *if* they sign a free agent pitcher (as opposed to trade or whatever) then the far outer bound of my interest includes:
Burnes Fried Snell Flaherty Kikuchi Eovaldi Manaea
Pivetta

Really only the top three (and maybe Flaherty, depending on whether his 2024 is sustainable, plus he's only 28) are likely to be meaningfully better than Pivetta going forward. Assuming that Burnes, Fried, and Snell are going to get stupid deals that are underwater within three years, and given Pivetta's relative durability and comfort in the Boston market, I'd rather they just resign Nick if they decide to go the free agent route. My real hope, though, is that Mayer+ can get Crochet.

I don't really see the value in trading a package that includes any of the big four to get Crochet who has a grand total of 0 full seasons as an SP, the guy didn't pitch more than 4 innings in any game after the end of June. He also only has two years left before he's an FA. I have a very hard time seeing how two seasons of Crochet is worth any of the big 4. The thought of dealing any of the big 4 once again leads me back to the thought I've had since July, just spend the money on FA pitchers and keep the farm intact. That just feels to me like the best avenue for sustained success for the organization not trading some heavy package for an SP.

Sign Flaherty, then trade wilyer, kutter, arias for Crochet? Then your rotation would be Crochet, Flaherty, houck, Giolito, bello and still have the big 4

Chances are it would have to be a 3 team deal as I'm not quite sure the White Sox would have that much interest in Kutter, maybe not even Wilyer. I don't want to sound like I am completely against the idea of getting Crochet, basically if they can get a deal for him not including any of the big 4 it could be a great idea outside of giving them like 10 prospects.

It's true that Crochet's track record has been limited by injury and, this year, an innings limit. But he was truly excellent in 32 starts--far better than his ERA, in fact. And he's only 25! That makes him a very different proposition that the three top pitchers on the free agent market. So yes, as long as he was amenable to a reasonable extension, I'd rather the Sox trade Mayer for a 25-year-old true ace, even one with his spotty injury history, than sign Burnes or Snell or Fried to a seven- or eight-year deal. (And admittedly, I'm not as high on Mayer as most here.)

We still have no clue if he can sustain an actual starting pitcher workload. Which is why I'm not lining up to give up a top 30 prospect for him which all the big 4 are at this point.

Yeah, it's easy to see the amazing metrics of Crochet and extrapolate it out over 180 - 200 innings but who's to say that those rates hold up if he were to assume that type of workload? Is it possible he does? Sure, but I certainly wouldn't wager the future of any of the big 4 to find out, especially with just 2 years of controlabilty. No thanks.

I'd like to add Kikuchi. He has been consistent for years in the AL East and since he went to the Astros he pitched like a #2. There are both potential and consistency in him.

I just said I can’t believe Max Fried is 31 already… And he’s my age lol Not going to lie I thought Fried was 29 going on 30 not already 31 but I'd still like to see them make a run at him. Something in the ballpark of 6/150 and I'd be on board. Adds a #2/3 SP to the rotation which would be a nice upgrade and keeps the farm intact. I don't really see it happening unfortunately as it sounds like a trade for that type of #2/3 SP is more likely than a signing but a guy can hope.
