Excellent catch! I forgot how good he was. I hardly think of him as a Red Sox. He was a huge missing piece out of that 2013 bullpen so my memory of his is so fleeting. I remember the guy he was traded for (ERod) better than him, but yes he started becoming dominant with the Sox and really blossomed with Baltimore (briefly), Cleveland and NYY. Billy Wagner another leverage LHP with electric stuff. The bullpen is much more dangerous with a Wagner/Miller type in the mix. After adding SP1, I would make Tanner Scott the top priority. Ah yes, they had him for 5 minutes. He was awesome. Forgot about him too. Dont normally associate him with the Sox either. I remember that he and Papelbon couldn't hold a 6-3 lead in must win ALDS game against the Angels. He gave up a 8th inning run and Paps gave up 3 runs, with 2 outs, and then 3 Red Sox outs later their 2009 season was over.

We've spent like half our time speculating so far about what kind of elite starter they could get. But it's interesting between the alleged Tanner Scott thirsting behind the scenes, and the way they've framed the offseason needs... maybe we have their focus backwards? Breslow has spoken candidly of the need to "rebuild the bullpen" - but his statements on the rotation have been a bit more tepid and along the lines of getting " depth." Financial considerations aside, I've wondered at times if they just don't share the same prism of "get a #1 starter to put in front of Bello, Houck & Friends" that we've been asking for multiple off-seasons now.

Assuming they'll spent up to the threshold, I wonder what the best-case scenario for an offseason in which they don't agree a frontline starter looks like. I mean, the Soto possibility is obvious there, but excluding him as well. Even if they were to go out and get Tanner Scott and then add another merely good rotation option like an Eovaldi, they'd still have a lot of money to play with. Maybe that's trading Yoshida and signing a guy like Alonso to DH/rotate at 1st? I don't know, but it just seems hard to envision them truly going for it this offseason without acquiring a big time starter just given all of the money they have to play with.

Also kinda crazy, but I think those were the only runs Papelbon ever gave up in the postseason. Dude had scoreless postseasons in 2005, 2007, 2008 lol. He was the anti-Clase

Andrew Miller is the first one who comes to mind - and damn he was fun to have in a bullpen. Having to overpay for the top reliever available in FA sounds terrible though. That Breslow guy was pretty decent too. Since then though it's been pretty slim pickings. Chris Murphy had three very good months and awful one just last year.

I mentioned Breslow, but while he was effective, particularly in 2013, he wasn't a premium stuff guy who got batters out (as opposed to Darwinzon Hernandez who had stuff but couldn't get anybody out). I mentioned Alan Embree as the last one, but others have correctly pointed out the brief time they had Billy Wagner and when they had Andrew Miller as lefties with premium stuff who got batters out, which is what Tanner Scott would bring that they don't have now.

I can't imagine the RS going head to head with the Yanks/Mets for Soto (I assume the LAD will not be in on him) I am an Alonso fan, I am not a fan of a DH/part time 1B (assuming Casas is here) at 5/$150 (or more). the way he is talking in the moment, it appears he definitely wants to stay with the Mets, perhaps even at a discount. adding Scott is near the very top of my list (TOR, Scott, SP)

I have absolutely no interest in Alonso at the rumored asking price he is going to have, he's nowhere near worth what he wants to get paid. Bring back O'Neill at a fraction of the cost if they want to use FA for RHH thump.

Agree, I’d either want TON back on a short term contract or if we trade Casas maybe a short term deal for Goldschmidt. At 37 he shouldn’t be looking for more than 2 years and can play soild to GG defense with a Fenway swing. Any word what he’s looking for in terms of AAV?

Goldschmidt was not very good last year and is 37, I don't see much reason to expect a bounce back from him I'd pass on him as well. In a theoretical scenario where Casas is dealt I'm targeting Christian Walker for 1st base if I'm the Sox. I've seen him projected at 3-4 years at 20~M AAV which isn't bad. That being said I just assume hang on to Casas unless he alone can bring back a bonafide stud pitcher which I'm not too sure about.

My likely unrealistic pipedream for either 2025 or 2026 is that the Red Sox get Vlad Guerrero Jr to split time with Casas and Devers at 1B, 3B and DH to keep them all healthier. The below quote doesn't help that but does make me wish for it a little bit more:
I didn't recall bad blood between his dad and the Yankees, but the quote leads me to believe that's the case.
He also still sees himself as a 3rd baseman (was actually good there in a SSS last year) and would likely refuse a contract/extension for a DH-only role.

The athletic predicts frieds contract at 6/174, I would totally be ok with the Red Sox giving him that
They also have snell at 3/105 which I would do a hundred times out of a hundred shorter term and no draft pick compensation

It does feel light on Snell in terms of either years of $s though.

Man that Bowden article is completely disconnected from reality. 7/204 for Pete Alonso, 7/150 for Santander and 2/26 for Verdugo were some real howlers. He has Rhys Hoskins who signed for 1/17 with a 1/17 player option, opting out and getting a better deal coming off a replacement level season. Huh?
And Nick Pivetta continues to be weirdly disrespected in these national free agent articles, not even getting a mention.

I'm not crazy about the idea of a 36 year old Max Fried eating up 12% to 13% of the budget in 2030, but I suppose it depends what the alternatives are.

If any team is dumb enough to give Pete Alonso 7/204 to be a 2 WAR 1st baseman who has been regressing every year for 3 years now I would be very shocked. That's also close to double what I've seen anyone else say on Santander and the Verdugo and Hoskins there are just no words. Bowden is a bozo.

The Billy Wagner trade was one of the smartest the Red Sox ever made and one of the dumbest the Mets ever made. The Red Sox traded two PTBNLs for Wagner, guys who tuned out to be nobodies, and I think got two supplemental first round picks when he became a free agent. Unfortunately they used the picks on two promising guys who washed out in Bryce Brentz and Anthony Ranaudo in what was overall a terrible draft for the Sox, with Brandon Workman being the top performer. www.soxprospects.com/dh2010.htm

However, no one on the Cardinals was really good. Decent but meh. He could probably be had for a couple million and for a team that might want to avoid the luxury tax that’s the type of guy they should consider in the off chance he catches fire and provides above replacement level production. He could be solid trade bait in July.
