Not easy to have 2 runners thrown out at second. These are 2 teams playing down to their disappointing records

Really letting Bassitt off the hook tonight. There should probably be five on the board instead of three. Hopefully the Jays continue to look like they are mailing it in.

So Houck took two weeks off and looks like an ace again.
I'm reminded of how the Red Sox under (I think) Francona used to make a point of working a two-week break into the middle of the season for all their starters. I'm also reminded of how Cora doesn't do that and also every single year of his tenure the team has faded down the stretch.

My hope is next year presumably they have fitts, priester waiting in the wings in AAA and Criswell stretched out enough that there should be more than enough depth to allow for this strategy.

Yeah Beckett was exhibit A, 2 weeks off and we got some Julian Tavarez entertainment. I trust Cora with the lineup, but he does suck at managing the pitching staff…

It's interesting that the very instant their playoff hopes essentially died, the offense came alive.* No longer pressing...?
*however many runs they score in this game, I'm calling their BB/K ratio a sign of good health

Watching Duran and Houck shine - the 2 players on this team that to me shone all season long. It's watching the game on laptop, but movie with my wife on TV. Haven't really looked at any stats

I get there's more than likely nothing to play for at this point but there's not a 0 percent chance. Don't get pulling houck after 5 really strong innings and less than 60 pitches.

Imagine if we had this Penrod/Guerrero performance in July/August 😬

It's also a good chance to check out some of the young pen arms - Penrod, Guerrero (both of which seem impressive)

True, at that point I'd almost just shut him down if this was their plan but yea no sense in risking injury I suppose trying to get extra innings out of him for a snowballs chance.

Fitts, Penrod and Guerrero: 25IP 0ER Fitts more than likely is ticketed for Worcester to stay stretched out and could probably use the extra development anyway but I'd be perfectly happy with penrod and Guerrero starting the year in the Boston pen.

Having been born in the DR but moved to Boston as a child, Guerrero is an interesting test case for the pattern of US-born players having mustaches but no beards and Latin American players having beards but not mustaches. He appears to be going with a thick beard and a thin mustache.
Note that Cuban-born Nestor Cortes, a no-bearder, moved to the US at age 7 months. Another important data point.

Not sure where I saw it but there was a public statement that they wanted Houck to continue pitching (with controlled pitch count) rather than shutting him down and facing the same inning issue next season. I think the thought is that this will raise the bar for Houck next season

Well - 10 BBs is certainly better than our typical 10 Ks!
But still - only 3 runs? (there's my comment on risp!)
The movie is over, so now the game is on the Teevee

I got bored and for the first time, watched an inning on gameday's 3D. Lots of bugs and things I'm guessing will be worked on in the future but interesting nonetheless.
