Game 5^: LAD @ NYY (FOX) Friday, Nov. 1
Game 6^: NYY @ LAD (FOX) Saturday, Nov. 2
Game 7^: NYY @ LAD (FOX) (^if necessary) A note regarding moderating of the gameday threads in 2024: As the disclaimer has always said, in the past, we have been very liberal in moderating the Gameday threads. They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

The Red Sox - who, you will all recall, totally blew the offseason by not signing Jordan Montgomery - had a better starting rotation than both these teams by both WAR and ERA.

The Red Sox - who, you will all recall, totally blew the offseason by not signing Jordan Montgomery - had a better starting rotation than both these teams by both WAR and ERA. Jordan Montgomery stuff aside, the Yankees ability to get better length from their depth options was a big thing - New York starters threw 32 more innings than Red Sox starters, despite the fact that Crawford/Houck/Bello threw 21 more than Rodon/Cortes/Stroman. Part of that was Cole coming back, but the Yankees ability to get replacement-level innings out of guys and put less pressure on their bullpen seems to be a big deal. Maybe the Boston relievers would've gotten worn down anyway, but the number of times the Red Sox needed to cobble together a game was likely a factor. I think there's something to the idea that a bullpen game gives you a better chance to win a specific game than using your #7 starter in a traditional way but makes it harder to win other games down the road. In September in the pennant race, play for the one win, but in June I think it'd be better to just call up Jason Alexander and try to get five innings from him. (Also, using a runs allowed version of WAR [bWAR] puts the Yankees starters ahead of Boston's). None of this applies to the Dodgers, of course, who had all of their pitchers fall out of a helicopter and they just hit and played defense so well that it didn't matter. Their top two pitchers by innings broke by September, just the un-Dodger-est successful Dodgers team I can imagine.

Their rotation may have given them a little more length, but the Red Sox lost one starter for the year, another starter for nearly the whole year, a third starter for five weeks and a fourth starter for 4 weeks. (The two guys who never hit the IL were the two who went way past career highs in IP and wore down over the course of the season.)
The Yankees only needed to get 9 starts outside of their top 6 starters; the Red Sox needed to get 39. (For the Dodgers it was like 60.)

The Dodgers:
- Signed Freddie Freeman for ages 32-37. So far: has nearly earned entire contract in first three years; refuses to go into decline. - Signed Teoscar Hernandez for 1/23. He put up 3.5 WAR. - Had James Paxton for half the season. He gave them 18 starts. The Red Sox had him for the other half of the season; he gave them 3 starts. - Somehow got a career year out of Miguel Rojas at age 35. - Turned Ryan Brasier into some kind of relief ace and have him starting playoff games. - Have gotten 0.9 WAR out of Kiké since last season after the Red Sox got -1.3 WAR in the first half of 2023.
Some of you think that that there is an inherent order to the universe and that all this must have a rational cause, and the Dodgers are just "good" at acquiring talent at the right time. I say the universe has no inherent meaning and they have been ridiculously lucky in all this.

Have you seen their injured pitchers? I’d hardly call this a lucky season for them.

Time to put away the old phrase "whoever wins the off-season, doesn't mean they're going to the world series."
These two teams had the two biggest off-seasons and have the highest payrolls in 2024.

That doesn’t mean the phrase isn’t correct.. it certainly helps if you have a good offseason, but nothing is guaranteed, and one season in which the teams that “won” the offseason both make it to the World Series doesn’t remotely disprove that.

Have you seen their injured pitchers? I’d hardly call this a lucky season for them. I'm not saying they've had a lucky season; I'm saying they've been incredibly lucky with how their free agents have worked out for them. (I didn't even mention Shohei because that's not exactly a "luck" case, but 9 WAR as a DH... that might be the biggest overperformance of them all.)

I’d quibble on Freddie (hall of fame type talent) and Teoscar (pretty much in line with what he’s been from a wRC+ perspective since 2020 outside of a down 2023), but they’ve definitely hit on a few of the marginal moves in a pretty big way.

I think those are the two most impressive, actually. Teoscar's arc looked like a classic parabola heading straight into the sea through age 30; but he bounced back to have the second-best wRC+ and WAR totals of his career. And players just shouldn't be maintaining a peak through age 35 like Freeman is. JD Martinez in 2023, too, come to think of it. Somehow the aging curve just doesn't apply in Los Angeles. [enter Hollywood botox joke here]

Yeah not always the best moves in the offseason, especially if you already have your foundation in place (Braves, Astros, Washington come to mind as recent winners). But this year, 2018 Red Sox, last year's Rangers team all proved that the team with the 2 best off-seasons prior to winning was really the key to them winning. Just hate it when it gets discredited or scoffed at when teams are throwing money around. "That's a dumb contract, they'll never win with him anyways. Stupid trade, you gave up your best prospect for only one year of that guy."

In year's past might be more relevant to what I'm talking about. People laughing at the Price contract because he hasn't won a playoff game yet. Crapping all over the Semien and Seager deals.

If you had told people November 2021 that one of 32 year old Freddie Freeman and 28 year old Trevor Story was about to have the best three year run of their career and the other was going to play just okay and miss 2/3rds of their games it wouldn't have been like extremely obvious which was which.

My prediction is Dodgers in 6 with Teoscar Hernández as WS MVP. But I think it's a pretty close matchup and it wouldn't shock me at all if the Yankees win it all.

I am not gonna parse who has gotten lucky or not (LOL). I am looking for red meat here boys.
We need the Dodgers to rip the hearts out of the Yankees and their fans and wash them down with a nice bottle of Chianti (metaphorically speaking, of course).
Cue Hannibal, LOL !!

If Soto signs with MFY in the offseason my guess is this won’t be the last time you see them vs the Dodgers in the World Series. I wish there was an option to have neither team win but you have to hope the dodgers win. I understand both teams got lucky with injuries but they both have superstars, something that the Sox need to achieve over the next couple of years. Who knows, Roman Anthony might be the Sox version of Juan Soto in 2028.

Tough to stay hyped up with a full work week between the CS ending and the WS starting.
