I'm still amazed they choked that badly. They had the Dodgers. The Yankees should have won Game 1 but blew that. Even down 3-2 going to LA, they had the Dodgers under pressure. Dave Roberts admitted the 3-0 thing had entered his mind. Aaron Judge's bat woke up and they had momentum. Cole was rolling. Then they had an inning that was straight out of my son's little league team. Take your eye off the ball and drop a flyball. Then a bad throw from SS to3b. And then the first thing they teach in little league. On a grounder toward 1b, the pitcher needs to run to 1b to cover or peel off if the 1b is coming to the bag. Cole taking the time to point to Rizzo but not taking the time to run to 1b is unbelievable. Then naturally he gave up two 2 run hits. He was out of the inning despite the two errors as the Dodgers made a mega squander not scoring with the bases loaded...and then Cole on the play that should have ended the inning decides not to execute the most fundamental play they teach you in little league. Then a few innings later, for an encore, they let a slumping Ohtani get on via catchers interference. Total little league. Maybe it's just that the Yankees, with 27 championships, simply dont win in years ending with 4. The only NY team to win a World Series in a year ending in 4 are the 1954 NY Giants. The good news is that the Yankees have never won the Series in a year ending in 5 either. I am surprised the MFY got as far as they did. They had three good hitters and the rest of their lineup is meh. The pitching was ok, but not great. This was a down year in the AL, so their path was easy. Their team is aging, and they really, really need to re-sign Soto. If MDY does not re-sign Soto, IMO they are a .500ish team next year.

I couldn't see it live but just watched the 5th inning from last night's game. Put me in mind of this thing I said about the Yankees back in mid-September: Judge just losing his concentration on an easy fly... Cole too lazy to cover first in a World Series elimination game... It's a theme.

From New York Post’s Joel Sherman: “What the Dodgers told their players in scouting meetings was the Yankees were talent over fundamentals. That if you run the bases with purpose and aggression, the Yankees will self-inflict harm as was exposed by Betts, Tommy Edman, Freddie Freeman, etc. That the value was very high to put the ball in play to make the Yankees execute. They mentioned that the Yankees were not just the majors’ worst baserunning team by every metric, but the difference was vast on the field between them and the Padres, who the Dodgers beat in the NL Division Series, but were impressive in this area. They were thrilled at how short Yankee leads were at first base to potentially be less of a threat on pivots at second, where Gavin Lux does not excel. They said their metrics had the Yankees as the worst positioned outfield. They were amazed how many times relay throws came skittering through the infield with no one taking charge and how often Jazz Chisholm Jr., for example, was out of place or just standing still when a play was in action.” nypost.com/2024/10/31/sports/yankees-world-series-failure-started-with-fundamental-issues/

The Yankees obviously "out-talented" the Sox this season and maybe the Sox close the gap or even surpass the Yankees, but if they dont fix their own similar issues, they'll probably run into the same problem the Yankees did.
