We talk about pitching. Our starting 1st baseman is hitting .199. Is it time to give Dalbec another try at 1st? If not forever, maybe for now? Dalbec is hitting well in AAA this year. Maybe Casas needs a short change of scenery or something to get going.

Kinda looks like Mr. Bloom is pretty smart after all.

There is no reason to keep him on the 40. I still think Mondesi opens on the 60. Also think Wong opens on the IL

Who if anyone has to be traded or DFAed before opening day? On 40 man: Brasier, Dalbec, Duran, Ort, Kelly, Chang, Valdez, Hamilton, Abreu, Mills If they need Alfaro and/or want Tapia, one or two of these guys has to go away (or clear waivers). Which one(s)? My guess is Wong makes opening day roster. Alfaro to AAA or some other team. Tapia replaces Ort on 40 man roster. Could Mondesi start on the 60 day IL?

I don't think 25.7 million per year will get Bogaerts. 30 million at a minimum.

All of the other reporting is that the Union offered that, not that it's been agreed. As Eugene Freedman pointed out, Heyman often reports an offer that the other side has signaled it wants as well as "agreeing," but there is no agreement - this is all contingent on a larger agreement and these are small potatoes issues that could easily change if it helps bridge the gap on the larger issues. Heyman is a hack. And larger bases is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of (besides the pitch clock and robo umps). Are we really going to have to divide MLB eras again, this time into pre-clown-sized bases and post-clown-sized bases? What happens when the new bases are too big (do you really expect them to get the size change right the first time?) and anyone with a modicum of speed is going to be successful 95% of the time, turning every walk and infield hit into a double? Ooooh, won't that be exciting! The game is clearly not in trouble, regardless of all the hand-wringing and pearl-clutching going on about the youngs. People have been worrying about younger audiences turning away from baseball for 50 years! I watched an early-70s WS game on youtube recently and the annoucers were talking about it then. And yet the owners are making more money than ever today. The players are paid more than anyone should ever be paid for something that doesn't instantly and indisputably save lives. Millions upon millions of fans pay good money to see games live (not to mention paying for parking and concessions) when they could just as easily sit at home and watch on TV. A recent poll showed MLB comfortably in second in popularity among the four major American sports leagues (reported here). Baseball is NOT facing an existential crisis! But all anyone wants to do is fiddle with the rules and complain about how long something they enjoy watching takes to watch or how the human strike zone isn't as accurate as in their computer game. If it's really so important to people that the games take less time, tape them and skip through the commercials and you'll get that half-hour of your life back. In summary, get off my lawn and leave the rules alone! (My apologies for the tone but I'm a little stressed out about the impending WWIII and I don't have spring training to take my mind off of it...)
Larger bases are dumb? I thought this was put on the table to reduce injuries a bit?

If the owners agreed to do a floor you bet your ass that hard cap is coming and it's coming in way lower than the CBT. There's no way the range would be a 125M floor and a 210M cap. None. So why would the players union accept this? Like ever? At one time, the CBA was about being like other leagues. Fair. Now the players want to limit their downside, with no cap on the upside? No a chance. Interesting how the players have the chance to address minor league salaries and nary a word about this is spoken. At the scale baseball does it, the minor league element is unique and must be considered in cost of payroll to the owners. There was a time when it seemed like only the owners where being unreasonable. That time has past.

What exactly have the owners compromised about? You seem to be pretty owner friendly and joined this board on the exact day the lockout started.....just saying Clearly they are an owner plant sent here to change the minds of the 10s or 100s of people reading this board. Companies agree? Its illegal for companies to agree, however the teams in MLB are franchises. Franchisees agree to band together on all kinds of things. Prices, pay, rules, policies, etc. As for no caps, we had that, and the fans in all but the largest cities disliked what the game became.

And just about all teams in the NFL and NBA spend the cap and exceed it with accounting tricks or the rules that allow it. The CBT threshold is for about 5 teams. Would the players accept an NFL or NBA style agreement with caps based on annual revenue and that would include minor league player salaries and bonuses? Would they accept max contracts and max contract durations? Would they be willing to set minor league player salaries at higher minimums if it was coming out of part of the player's share of revenue? My guess is the answer to most of these questions is no, The owners have plenety of guilt here, but the players are far from angelic.

Baseball is a bit broken. It seems like more unbridled free agency would just make it worse. Teams need a way to build some level of continuity from year to year in the roster make up, or the loss of interest will just accelerate.
As for the team control issue, while I get it should or could be shortened, it seems like minor league player investment would decline as the payback for investing in minor league declined. Some many players fizzle out before making it. Get ready for another layer of minor league baseball contraction.

Until there is a new CBA there will and should be very little signing. Baseball economics are going to look very different after this agreement is done. Committing to many dollars against a black hole would be a poor decision.

Anyone else worried about wearing out Barnes? Yes. I could not understand why they went with him last night. There are only so many innings in that arm

25% of the way through the season. The Red Sox have the best record in baseball. I think Alex Cora is doing a fine job as manager, and with that level of success, it is hard to questions his line up choices.

My current projection. Anyone projected for MLB who is dealt is presumed to be replaced by an acquisition.
C (4): Vazquez, Plawecki; Wong, Grullon CIF (4): Dalbec, Devers, LHH 1B Acquisition; Potts MIF (4): Bogaerts, Chavis; Arauz, Munoz OF (7): Benintendi, CF Acquisition, Verdugo, Martinez, RHH 4th OF Acquisition; Rosario, Wilson
SP (11): Sale, Rodriguez, Eovaldi, Perez, Pivetta, Acquisition; Seabold, Houck, Mata, Groome, Mazza RP: (8) Closer Acquisition, Barnes, Brasier, Hernandez, 2 Setup Acquisitions; Valdez, Taylor
NRI: Peraza, Lin; Godley, Weber, and possibly other P
That's 38, which leaves open a spot (plus one for Rule 5). It's hard to see that going to Chatham or Aybar. You'll note that I have no reserve MI listed on the MLB roster, and only 12 pitchers. The extra spot could go to one of those; whether they acquire a third setup guy depends on how Valdez looks the rest of the way. If they don't pick up a reserve MI, or a 2B to make Chavis into the 10th player, then it's Munoz, Peraza, or Lin.
Do you see someone like Chatham having trade value? I’m not sure I foresee just dropping him off the 40. Interesting have have Muñoz on there. There are a lot pitchers we are throwing off the wall you are leaving off. Looks like Mazza has moved ahead of Weber and the likes of others. I had some hope for Brice but he has been disappointing lately. Brewer seems like a candidate to bring back. Springs has been ok recently. However if we can find better options in the free agent market I’m all for it of course, and maybe a few of these guys can slip through and you bring back off the 40 to maintain depth. The rule 5 draft is planned for 12/9/2020. I would guess most acquisitions will be after that date so some of the spots left open above could be filled for draft day and then cuts could be made as people were signed.

Everyone respects what pedey has done for the red sox as a player but enough is enough waive the guy. We have been carrying him for 4 years of nothing. Maybe he can come back as a bench coach or front office guy. I am thinking the same. That or let him retire with an injury settlement of everything he would be paid next year. I know they still get dinged for the salary hit, but the roster spot opens up this way. I don't see the guy as a coach. Hard nosed player, but I am not sure he has got the make up of a rah rah team is everything guy. I have no idea of what he could or could not do in the front office. That skill set is not really obvious from play.

Kickham, Trigg, I mean, where they getting these guys.? This, on top of Brewer, Spring and the long parade of never-heard-ofs who have graced the mound at Fenway Park. Is this the best our GM can do? It is embarrassing to this franchise that it cannot find decent replacements for the loss of the staff because of injuries and trades. Don’t expect anyone to replace a Sale, E-Rod, Price, etc., but fans should hope that the administration would bring in respectable pitchers and not make this franchise a laughing stock. Not sure how you do that and cut payroll. Injury payroll still counts and the respectable pitchers you speak of are not cheap. I will take a year like this if it is as a result of successfully going all in a few years ago to win the world series. Do I like it, no, but unless you are the Yankees or the Dodgers, this is luxury tax baseball. Being that baseball is the only sport not to have a cap, the next CBA will probably make this pattern even a more regular occurrence going forward.

I was pretty sure it was Houck. It was an inning where he struck out the last two batter the last of whom was Dalbec who was caught looking. If I recall the announcers said the reading came from "Alex Richardson" and they mentioned several times his arm was "electric." You must be right though. It wouldn't be logical for Houck to pick up five or six mph. They have access to Trackman data in the booth (they've known HR distances within a minute or so at points) so they wouldn't be citing someone else for readings I don't think. If these are correct, I'm guessing Covey Tuesday, Johnson Wednesday for the big club. If it is Johnson, they will need to DFA 2 guys for Taylor and Darwinzon's return. Roenicke said Perez Tuesday. Sounds like your dude Brewer providing bulk tomorrow, potentially after an opener. Wednesday could be Johnson. Instead of DFA'ing 2, could/should ERod be moved to the 60?

Is there any chance MLB could set up a concrete gnome with a hole in it's belly in CF which if a batter hits a ball through the hole the season ends and the batter's team is crowned World Champion. As long as we get a salary reset, I could think of worse things. As it stands now I would not want that to happen before Sept 1

Its 30 home games. Maybe some playoffs. Seems like a good AAA or spring training facility could work for such a limited number of games.

Indianapolis and Nashville both have nice stadiums. Not too far from the rest of the temporary division.
