The Sox are having a heck of a draft. They are swinging for the fences. Maybe they know by now they won't be able to pay all of their current beasts or semi-beasts in their lineup.

Pedro was an anomaly. He was also 160 soaking wet. THAT is incredible. I'm still surprised his arm/shoulder lasted as long as it did, especially the innings (he pitched at least 180 innings 10 x's) he put up. Imagine if he was babied like some pitchers are in this day and age.

Like the Northcut pick. Honestly would have preferred a pitcher since they already went pretty heavy on bats early (though I guess pitching may be a fall back for him anyways?), and who knows what the demands are for the remaining big name pitchers out there. I'm assuming they have some feelers out to Northcut already and know what type of money he's looking for. I thought, other than Vasil, Northcut would be the toughest, of the top 100 still available, to be drafted and forgo his Vandy commit. I figured it would be one of the UF commits to get drafted. Being the first pick of day 3 says to me he's the first choice to get all of the over slot money the Sox will have available. If not him then some other HS kid whose strong commitment could be swayed. I like this pick.

Weather reports for tonight's games:
Portland game: cold and windy in Binghamton, 35 degrees with 12-15 mph winds. Brrr..
Salem game: 60 degrees and clear. What! Great weather.
Greenville game: Temps in the 50's. Nice!
Play ball!
Edit: Binghamton ... Better?! Grammar/spelling police in da house.

Doesn't Porland's stadium have about 10 feet of snow on it? It's a good thing they start the season on the road.

Unbelievable! It looks like ST stats don't count because Ohtani looks to be really good at this pitching thing. Who would believe it? He probably should've DH'd. He would've have done better then the one they had that game.

The Red Sox will not need a 5th starter again until 4/14. I wonder if they will option Velazquez to keep him on regular rotation or use him in the bullpen until then. I think my personal preferences would be, in order: A) to recall Lin for his versatility off the bench, particularly in the two national league games where double-switching and a pinch runner are more likely to come into play; B) recalling Scott to give them an extra lefty; with a tie for C) between recalling Workman and just leaving Velazquez in the bullpen. I guess we're lucky that Steven Wright won't added to the roster where he can pinch run as well. I kind of like it how they don't bunch the inter-league games together like they used to. Bring on the Marlins! We need a couple more spring training games.

I hope all of our minor league players understand that most of April's games are guaranteed to get rained out (especially in Portland) so no worries about bullpen depth and roles just yet. Give it about 4 more weeks. (half joking)

In one of the minor league games today, I watched Kervin Suarez hit two singles and a grand slam. Have not heard much about him but am now interested. Any info you find on him would be appreciated. www.soxprospects.com/players/suarez-kervin.htmHere's a look at his profile and past stats.

Would like to know if Mata has grown since last year, strength wise. Would like to know his velocity and where it usually sits now and where it tops out. Mata is a real wildcard and diamond in the ruff if he can become say Tanner Houck in terms of velocity. He has a real chance of becoming that too. Imagine if Pedro Martinez got his hands on this kid (if he hasn't already). Edit- Iakovos has already touched on this already a little. I think Mata has a chance to become something like a Rick Porcello. I hope the staff here sees him live and agrees to a certain degree.

Given next years free agent market and JDM's age I don't think this is the year you do a 1-year contract. If I was DD I would stay put, and eventually, you will get Martinez. I think DD knows this... The D'backs can also use the QO to JDM next year and therefore it would lessen his value and not increase it.

With McCutcheon going to SF this likely takes them off the list for JDM even though Andrew plays CF.

I'm in the group that doesn't think the Sox are trying to sign both Martinez and Hosmer. That's BS.There's a very small chance that happens. Silverman must be Boras's mouthpiece trying to drive up the price for both players since I don't think there is much interest, considering the huge asking price, in either player league wide.

I’m also reporting that. My source is common frickin sense. I’d obviously love to have Machado on the team theoretically, but I don’t see how it would work given what the Red Sox have in place already, plus the issues with trading within the division, PLUS the history between the Sox and Machado (which by the way is yet another reason why that whole episode was incalculably stupid). I'm all for it. For a guy on the last yr of his deal, the price shouldn't be too insane. Plus, if you strike a long term deal with him, there's your power source for 7 yrs. It also allows you to trade Xander to recoup some prospects. It doesn't matter as it's not going to happen but the asking price is believed to be 2 (low) cost-controlled starting pitchers. We don't really have those. Plus, I don't think we trade Devers in a deal for Machado, especially with his impending free agency and dislike for this organization. I know that money talks but still....we have other fish to fry unless they're trade bait.
