FTHW, I think you're underestimating the size of the change that's going here. Guys like Eddie Romero are in all likelihood gone. This is a total house cleaning job. Dombrowski is going to bring in a likeminded GM such as Wren or O'Dowd and together they're going to build an entirely new front office.

Yeah I wasn't posting that to say, "Look at this disaster!" Everyone can draw their own conclusions.
Good news for us I guess is that he seems to do okay drafting in the top 10.

Remember when Ben Cherington said like a week ago that he "expects to have a boss", meaning a President of Baseball Ops? In other words, he didn't quit because they put someone over him. That means one of two things:
1. He was actually fired, didn't "step down" (not the case based on what's been reported)
or, more likely
2. He saw that they hired Dave Dombrowksi and said, "Thanks, but no thanks."
IOW, Ben knows this a huge philosophical shift and he wasn't gonna stick around just so he could be directed by DD decimate the farm system for short-term gains.

At this rate within 10 tears the team will be sold and Fenway Park will be blown up.

Hiring Dave Dombrowski is the equivalent of giving Carl Crawford 150m dollars because you haven't won a playoff game in two years.

I hate this move. I think it's a shakeup for shakeup's sake and is more about PR than baseball. I'm even more concerned about the direction of this team going forward than I was yesterday.
edit: and this was before I saw the Frank Wren thing. what the hell is John thinking?

I wasn't rating the Sox drafting against other teams. Yes, I know, that was my criticism.

Looking at one team's drafting record in a vaccum isn't very instructive. Tell me how the other 29 teams drafted during that same period and I'll tell you if the Red Sox did a "good" job or not.
Also it's bizarre to me that you're down on their drafting overall and then cite 2014 as potentially the "best draft ever." Travis is a low-ceiling player, Chavis is having a down year, and while Kopech has a lot of upside he did hit a fairly significant bump in the road that ended his season. It could end up being a fine draft, I just don't understand singling it out for hyperbole.

I'm not encouraged by Ball this year at all. He's declined in Ks, BBs, and HR. I'd have him repeat Salem next year. I'm often curious what, if any, sports people played and if it has an affect on their opinion of things like this. Sometimes you have to take a step back to go forward. When you've been doing things a certain way for a long time and make changes, there's period where you step backwards and you have to trust that the change you're making is for the better. I'm not worried yet. The problem isn't that he's taken a step back, it's that he's stepping back from a place that wasn't good to begin with. Also, what "change" are you talking about? Do you have some inside info that us non-sports players aren't privy to? And even if that's the case, that "period" has been an entire season in length. Ball's too young to give up on but I can't imagine how anyone could have expectations at this point.

I wonder if it was found out during his recent surgery. Hopefully they caught it early. It was. And Lester's because he got in a fender bender. Horrifying to think of the luck involved in these things.

Apparently it's very treatable, which is great.
Not to be crass (and I wasn't advocating for this anyway) but he definitely won't be fired any time soon now.

I have to admit it crossed my mind too when the Lucchino news came down but god can you imagine the reaction if they actually gave Cherington a promotion.

AFAIK he had a rep as being a bright guy before he went to a team with a meddling owner.
I don't see why buying low should only apply to players and not front office people as well.

moncada had a cast on his left hand last night before the game. I've heard his hand was wrapped. I do not believe it to be true that he had a cast on his hand. #CastGate

No, you're missing the point, he's actually saying that because the teams are "bad" our prospects might be overrated.
Never mind the fact that 95% of the players in the system, all of whom contribute to the win-loss records, aren't even considered when people do these farm system rankings.
It's like saying Detroit isn't a poor city because it's in America which is the richest country in the world.

Don't you think before we call it meaningless we see what transpires in the organization during the next few years following up on this minor league season? How long has it been since the Sox system was THIS bad, results-wise, at the full-season level? To say it means nothing before we see how our supposed gold mine of prospect nuggets turns out is a sort of negative way of putting the cart before the horse. Farm system rankings are very largely based, basically, on each org's top 10 or so prospects. Now ask yourself how much impact ten players, spread over six or seven levels, have on the combined minor league win-loss record of an organization. Then, in light of that, explain to me why your question has enough validity to even warrant a response.

No. It's meaningless. You can keep bringing it up year after year after year and it will always be meaningless. Just stop. Please. Please for the love of god stop.

Why would they scratch him because of a promotion. He's gonna teleport to Salem in time for the first pitch?
