Been zipping around from game to game myself since the Sox one wasn't broadcast on TV and the one theme have heard from 3 have been watching is how nice it is to have some fans in the stands, repeated over and over from announcers as different as Steve Stone and Kay in NY.
Others watched various games yet? Noticed how different stadiums done with the distancing? Some seem to let % of fans in the OF grass area figure it out themselves, while the ChiSox, who are in AZ have these chalk marked boxes distanced apart. Same with standing fans for cardinals in Florida. Saw fairly large group few shots standing together near RF. Figure league will come up with some uniform policy so all are close to the same soon.

Workman was pretty solid after finally shaking off the troubles of his TJ, but agree 100% on the rest. None, even Hembree the last year or so were worth a flip and bloom managed to pick up a handful of fair kids in return. Like pennies from heaven.
All i could think of when Tampa was sending the Sox hernandez.. Philly Pavetta and Seabold, Pad's Potts and Rosario is THANK goodness there are other GM's who look at fuzzy numbers that hardly ever translate and paid thru the nose for extras. Sure, Moreland and Pillar were OK, but some GM's really over valued their worth and Bloom did well.

Joaquin Andujar: There is one word in America that says it all, and that one word is, 'You never know.' Off topic of Osich/Bryant, but those who don't remember Andujar from his days as a pitcher for mostly NL teams? He was one of those guys who gave batters the jitters when was on the mound, much like Buster Kison did. You didn't spend time digging in before an AB and especially.. Dive over HIS plate, or you were going to catch one high and tight. Andujar was infamous for starting brawls with his fearless style. One to be admired, along with Kison, 2 of the last.

I don't think these guys are really judged in the same way as when the gatekeepers were like 5 cigar-chomping good old boys at the Globe and Herald who judged players based on batting average and pitcher wins. In any event, Bloom, Cherington, Epstein... they're all the same person: elite college-educated, well-versed in the communicative mores of the professional/managerial class. I don't think the PR will be a problem for him. The judgment will ultimately be based on the on-field performance. As far as that goes, I hope and expect he'll have a very long leash. It's kind of amazing the challenges he walked into when he took the job: -had to trade the team's generational star -had to get under the CBT while being saddled with a bunch of dead money -depleted farm system -covid And whatever anyone thinks of the team's off-season moves, they're clearly not tanking, a la the Cubs and Astros last decade (or the Orioles in perpetuity). So he's trying to build up the farm system while also fielding a competitive team every year. It's a high-wire act, and I hope the owners are patient if a season or two doesn't go as hoped. Personally, I think the rubber will hit the road in the 2022-23 off-season. Between dead money coming off the books and contracts expiring, the 2023 roster will really be his creation, through whatever combination of extensions and FA signings he decides to go with.
I advocating tanking like the Astros before last year. They should have. They sucked anyway. If they’d utterly tanked last year and this, they’d be just as able to come out strong in 2023. I’d have stripped this team down to X and Devers, basically — trade Eovaldi, CVaz, JDM... at least. (Ironically, now, I’d have jept Beni and JBJ). That was before last year, before Covid. They’d get some return for those guys, maybe not huge, but some, with the added bonus of being really bad this year instead of ok. Then have top-3 picks 2 years in a row, etc etc. This is my concern with this coming season. Being *meh* doesn’t add any value going forward. And the guys I’d trade will be moving out of their primes by the time this team is deadly serious. It's been posted here by several before, think needs repeating that Boston is not just a ballclub, but media (NESN) organization as well. Throwing away just a single season would lead to a huge loss of cash. Not just in subscription to NESN, but ticket revenue as well. It wouldn't be bottom line worth it and face it.. This is a company 1st and a 2 billion dollar one at that. JH isn't going to allow anyone running it to even think of affecting the bottom line that negatively and rightfully so. Edit: Maybe my add on Bloom wasn't understood 100%. Not a critique, only that thought Duquette could have done better befriending the faces behind the camera instead of alienating those he did. I also think Bloom should have more leeway than just this coming offseason to judge properly as Incandenza proposed at a minimum. Bloom was put into an impossible position and only after this coming season is over will he really have any room at all to operate as he sees fit. Maybe 2-3 more years more reasonable. My only critique of him this entire offseason has been the MiLB guys. The MLB people were solid.

I sleep well at night, knowing that Bloom is at the helm ... Funny stuff. Epstein and Dombrowski were popular as well, only Duquette wasn't and reason he didn't have the "love" of the faithful was didn't smile a lot and wasn't with the articulate answers the media expected. In short.. He was Lou Gorman, without the smiles, a GM whom everyone liked, yet made brutal trades, FA signs etc.. Something Duquette wasn't known for. Half of the job of being the GM is smiling for the camera. Bloom learns to do that in Boston and which end to kiss and he'll be fine.

I wouldn't want CV moved personally. Couple of reasons. 1, is not many combo of good hitting/catching and throwing receivers in the game as it is and 2. Vazquez is one who likes it in Boston, saying multiple times he wants to remain, which means he may take a slight discount in terms of $$ and years to remain in any extension.
Should Bloom look to move him, which his name was rumored to have come up last year's trade deadline, I expect the price to be quite expensive, as in a player ready (or nearly) to step right into the lineup/rotation and more is so rare catcher's of his ilk, with 2y of control being paid so little.

Ok, so I’m realizing the video is not from ST but is a tweet from September at the ATS. Maybe he is actually less heavy right now. Hopefully...I must say tho that his lower body looked pretty "thick" in Sept. Maybe even with lost weight, that is his body structure. Spring training used to be for losing the weight gained from winter. How many old timers, who saw ST players show up during the 60's and 70's remember guys with bellies? I've mentioned this multiple times before, but the worst offender was George Scott, who always showed up with a big gut every spring he was with Boston. Guys now get made fun of for just looking like they "could" be over weight by 5 pounds. One day will have my son go digging thru the attic and see if have any pics still from ST of the old days and show what out of shape players look like here.

Projected 1st 5-6 of the MLB pen shouldn't be too bad. It ought to be better than last season's mess-terpiece, unless the wheels fall off. It's the guys who will be needed to fill in for those always needed emergency injuries which will happen, the several who won't pitch to expectations that I'm worried about. none of the minor league signings (pitchers) offer anything special, other than that glitzy fantasy spin rate, which by itself is worth less than the going rate of confederate money.

Walden isn't a big deal at all. I can't see a team claiming him however, relievers are usually the most volatile spot on the team. My thoughts are if you aren't elite and you don't have a track record then you're replaceable. Ought to be in love then with the potential relievers it seems will be at AAA. Walden has had 1 season, with 70 appearances at that of success. The cast estimated to be at AAA this year is mostly nothing, followed by more nothing, outside of hoping Bazardo and Feltman, 2 legit prospects can take the next step and Gonsalves. Not a big fan of the MiLB arms brought in this year overall, nor ones tossed aside, such as Tapia.

Miami takes 2 of 3 from #1 Florida Adrian Del Castillo 3-13, 2 2B, 2 BB, 2 HBP, 2 K Jud Fabian 1-13, 3 BB, 7 K Didn't miami lose 3/5ths of it's rotation in the last draft and post draft undrafted signings?

Maybe if/after some core player extension is negotiated and that player's current 2021 salary eliminated and the new one is included in whatever deal is negotiated. Then could see Bradley back, if that deal took them over the threshold and whatever Bradley was offered/signed for was cheap.. 5-7m AAV over no more than a couple seasons.
BSI, or maybe was OTM had an article today on prospective extensions. Nothing earth shattering, but brings forth obvious candidates. Didn't mention Vazquez tho who would like to see extended beyond his 2022 team option.

Understand Manfred. My question was about Rule 5 picks in general really. The article made me think possibly had missed some odd agreement between owners and the MLBPA last year, or this winter regarding those picks and shortened time forced to keep them on the active 25-6 man roster.
For the injury thing u mentioned.. If one has a major injury and is forced to miss a lot of time, like 60 day injury list, it does not count as time for rule 5 guys and needs to be made up.
Not sure and didn't look up, but think Miquel Gonzalez, a RHP from Sox system had TJ, was rule5 pick by Baltimore and missed some time with them before having 3-4 really solid years in the O's rotation in the early 2010's.

Boras works for Jackie (and he has a great track record). But, any offers that JBJ has had he could have accepted, regardless of Boras. Or he could tell Boras to back off his 4-yr only offers stance if he was so inclined. This is true, but he also pays him to be his advisor. If Boras is telling him to wait and I can get you a great deal, is JBJ gonna tell him no, your wrong? I do remember Varitek telling him to "Get the best deal with the Red Sox" so it does happen but I think that is pretty rare. Based on Boras' reputation players generally hire him that are interested in milking every last drop. Seems like the door has closed with the Mets and possibly with the Red Sox. Houston appears to be the best match and I wouldn't rule out someone like DD jumping in and overbidding Used to keep a list of players who either publicly had traded barbs with Boras after leaving, or actually sued him. Well.. I've no longer got it. was several years ago anyway.. I remember a reserve latin infielder Boston had several years ago was on that list, who was once a very good ballplayer, apologizes, don't remember his name.. Sheffield was on the list.. Seems like was about 6-8 former clients whom had either publicly dissed, and/or outright taken him to court for various things. The ex red sox player was, as remember barely paying any attention to his case in FA and relegating it finally to someone who didn't understand negotiations. What has been commonly said about Boras is he pays attention to so called "major" cases and ignores the others, or shuffles them off to underlings. Used a lawyer for anything, especially some so called "name" one? Notice how a case will get shuffled off to some fresh faced, just out of college kiddie who knows squat? Believe myself Boras works this same way, counting on using the name to draw in unsuspecting clients.. Handling the major "cases" himself, then shuffling off the leftovers to his junior partners who barely know what the hell is going on.

I suppose Chavis is an option as well Yeah, a tertiary option I'd think. I would anticipate that he spends a lot of time in Worcester and if Dalbec goes bad they could turn to Chavis, but I think ultimately he'll wind up being traded. Meanwhile Moreland should get a steady diet of ABs as the LH hitting platoon half of the DH role, so he should get his 400 ABs, something he wouldn't get with the Red Sox. Of course if Oakland struggles, he could find himself traded again at the deadline. I really hope Munoz is the other guy on the bench if they are going to be using the rotate guys at all these positions, like every OF ,2b and if Devers is throwing the ball everywhere, except near 1b when he fields it. Having 3 guys capable of fielding 6-7 positions would be invaluable and can hit, rather than an offensively challenged Arroyo and Chavis needs to work on his approach at AAA again. Who cares if someone claims Arroyo off waivers. gruillon was a bigger loss and that wasn't much really.

Marlins DFA'd Harold Ramirez, which is slightly surprising. Perhaps he was the mystery veteran they were dangling in talks for Benny? I would think it would be Garrett Cooper. Not on the topic really, but man.. Ramirez is just another Latin area ballplayer who won't take a walk and seems to hack at everything it looks like. Is there any buscoes, or coaches in those areas who will tell these kids, as teenagers to NOT swing at every pitch? Here is another example of a guy, who is defensively challenged, has some power, but sub5% BB rate, so ends up as a waiver wire refugee. How many has this happened to over the years? Free swingers nearly 1 and all it seems if are from Latin America and I certainly don't mean that as an insult to the heritage before some wokie yaps in, but the coaching, who tells them early on they have to swing the bat to get noticed..

Note that Ian Cundall tweets that the Rays "also acquired 3 catchers this offseason, so Hernandez likely had been pushed down the depth chart and they probably needed the 40-man spot for another area." Red Sox acquired enough pitching to make this pair less valuable to them, and have few catching prospects. Rays acquired catchers that made Hernandez less valuable to them, but presumably need pitching. Sox also have been going after RHH pull-hitters with power. Could the 6' 1" Hernandez be a future 1b? That team has really reeked at catching for the most part for years, with 1-2y exceptions off and on. Remember several years back when the near 40yo Jose Molina was the starting catcher for a couple of years? While he was decent in his prime, he was a shell of his former self and an example pretty much of what they have fielded for the last 20y more than half the time.

This is one of your favorite trades? Org. guys all around? I am afraid I am confused by the mise-en-abyme of it all: Bloom is a genius because of his Rays training, so he has mastered the art of sending guys we know are not valuable to chumps who don’t. Bbuuuuutttt.... this is to the RAYS, masters of knowing which prospects will bust and wizards of finding low hanging fruit. To believe Bloom has won, we must trust his Rays training; if he has won, then the Rays lose.... and then.... what... becomes.... of.... his... training??? Did O. Henry write this story? Geez man, you're crapping on Bloom turning Springs and Mazza into an actual prospect? (Not sure why Hernandez is just an "org guy" to you.) And then you impute a totally invented argument to a commenter who was making a very valid point. You often take a more pessimistic stance, which is fine, but this just seems kind of sour. Have to agree with Manfred here. Sure, the Sox turned 2 AAAA discards into 2 longshot prospects, but let's please stop with the highway robbery have been seeing here and elsewhere. TB wouldn't have given up on Hernandez had they not spotted various warts with him. Teams don't just give up top prospects for DFA'd players who have had no success at the MLB level and in their late 20's and early 30's.

Isn't Philly still the most logical landing spot for JBJ? In any event, perhaps we should see what sort of contract he signs before judging whether he got terrible advice or not. My guess at the beginning of the off-season was that he'd get 2/18 or something like that, which seems close to the consensus. Maybe Boras hyped things up a bit to the point where people were speculating about a 3/36 type deal or something, but if he ends up signing for 2/18 after all that doesn't mean Boras did his job poorly; it probably just means that was his market all along. I thought when DD was hired there may be some push by him to sign Bradley, but we heard nothing. Everyone remembers how much of a fan of his DD was at one time. As the cpl months have gone by.. We've heard nothing linking JBJ to Philly.. I've thought to myself DD soured on him while he was in Boston, or Maybe the asking price initially scared him away and he went about construction the Philly roster, spending middleton's money elsewhere.

5$ Plus an option for pillar. JBJ still should get 3/27 He’s probably asking for 5/60. That Pillar sign should take out the Mets for good now and I thought it was a reasonable deal he got, one wouldn't have minded Boston doing earlier in the offseason before they got so close to the tax line. He's not the type to approach/go over for of course. So how bad did Boras overplay his hand here? Houston is left. Will they even go as high as 3/27m? could Boras get anyone else interested if that's all the Astros offered, or say 3/21m? Boras takes it personal when is slighted, no issues holding "his" people out for money thinks can get, even if it does not come and has to settle in May/June for 1y pro rated deal. Happened before. One to feel sorry for in all of this is Bradley, who seemed like a nice guy all those years and has gotten terrible advice all winter.

I've been watching the responses to this and it's not like this hasn't happened before. Andy Marte, the Renteria trade was hardly in Boston a month before he was swapped out for Crisp and others in a large multi player move over the winter of '06. The Sox might have something they just don't like regarding Hill and maybe the mets value him more, same as it was with marte, who looked up earlier to make sure, but was ranked top 15 by BA several times and 9th when he was dealt to boston. It does all make me think that the Mets will be sending a fairly decent kid back now, while KC probably very low MiLB extreme longshots, or organizational filler. The deal hinges whether or not it's decent now on what they will be getting upcoming from the Mets from what we have learned.

Not figured out really yet what it is. Not a salary dump, which some thought before he was moved trading him away it would be since they are still paying half his 6m salary and the sort of replacement (Cordero) in the deal is making around 1m. nobody has any real clue as to either the names, or quality of the PTBNL players coming back, only hoping that they will be of the same class, or better than they received from San Diego and Philly this past season, but no guarantees of course since the guys, or 2 might end up being nothing more than organization filler.
The kind of deal fans can look at and just hope the PTBNL kids are worthwhile. I, for one wasn't and am still not impressed with Cordero. Hoping reason they agreed to accept him was because the list of kids they had a choice from later on was worth it.
