keithlaw @keithlaw · I'm glad Simmons and Miller got in, but this system of committees is consistently terrible, and the two most qualified player candidates (Whitaker and Evans) didn't get in. Can't agree more on Evans and Sweet Lou not getting in. Those 2 deserved it and have for years. Wrote long post on MLBTR regarding Whitaker and not going to do the entire thing again, but just being half of probably the greatest long term DP combo of the last half century alone was enough reason with Alan Trammel. Both had the glove and bat for years. As for why Jim Kaat never gets mentioned any longer and Tommy John does.. That one is also baffling. I saw both pitch for years and Kaat was just as good, final career numbers are very close also.

Think positive everyone on all this Cole to NY so give up the Ghost on 2020. Not all have been able to handle that town.. Randy Johnson, Grey and then throw in with Boras let's hope Cole costs NY something along 35M annually for 7-8Y which will get those guys into a predicament quickly ina cpl years when their own kids begin needing extensions, or facing the idea of being traded away.
There is a lining here not bad and Cole isn't, nor hasn't the past pedigree of Sale, if Sale is healthy.

He has a habit of pretty much dumpster diving, or searching the waiver wire for relievers and hitting on them on a decent amount. Will Bloom continue that? Brach may have been one, but he went today for cheap. Cishek maybe won't cost a fortune with his age. Strop shouldn't be that high and I'm loving the idea of getting Taijuan Walker, even if he costs as much(around 5m) as he made last year.

Longhi was another liked a lot from seeing at Ft Myers years ago and was sad when he was sold away. glad he's back. Younger by half dozen years than brentz. maybe he'll stick around several seasons, finally develop some more. liked the line drive swing remember he had all those seasons back.

I fail to understand the baseball reasoning of trying to pay someone else to take both David Price and Chris Sale. Neither of those guys are what are termed as salary dump players, such as Choo, Chris Davis, Pujols etc.. Price, whose name gets thrown out the most is still a mid rotation starter, more than capable of giving 150+ innings of solid innings and while not worth 30m, it would cost several million to replace his spot in the rotation for a team that has no replacements.
The only expensive member of the rotation possible that could be looked at to move would/should be Eovaldi and he's not as bad of a dump type players as those mentioned above.

That's the crux of Alex' piece. If he walks away completely, the MLBPA will be pissed. If he walks away with some job/understanding, MLB will be pissed. Unions (all) stay pissed, so that's a non issue. It boils down to whether or not Pedroia wants to give up close to 30m or not and judge that with his close ties with the organization he has regarded as Home. I'm with Chris and many others here. He has 2x given the organization deep discounts with extensions and believe he should take what is left coming to him and then work in the organization with another title should he wish to

Is it not possible that they could've claimed Osich thinking they could sign him to a deal before Arb? When that didn't happen, they didn't tender him an offer. In other words, it's possible they were hoping to sign him to a deal less than what he could've gotten arb. Didn't work out. This makes some sense at least. I don't see how Brian Johnson is even related to this. The Sox already have enough (two) LH relievers to cover depth in the bullpen to the suggested post above this one. Brian Johnson was probably going through waivers regardless. Still have Poyner also, however much good he will be with the 3 batter minimum rule coming. Went over many of the waived last evening and lefty Caleb Frare caught my eye. mid 90's FB and slider. 2 options left, 26YO and was decent his MiLB career until handful of innings in the bigs 2019. Can't hurt to take a look in ST.

Tijuan Walker was non-tendered by Arizona. Don't know his health status as he has missed most of the past two seasons, but he might definitely be worth a look for the Red Sox. Wouldn't mind him either. He made bit over 5m last year and has 2y left of control. Whoever has him will have to work with rebuilding his arm strength at the 5m figure back into the mid 90's starting pitcher he was at a fairly high amount if he's claimed. The guy used to watch with Seattle was worth it, but that is a few years removed and Boston is now in cut salary mode. I'd give him a try over some soft tosser like Chacin in a second tho.

Btw, just saw TB DFA’d Jesus Aguilar...he’s someone I wouldn’t mind seeing the Sox take a shot on. Had a rough follow-up to his breakout, but he walks (11%) and cut his K rate from 25 to 22%. Big drop in ISOP but some of his struggles are probably BABIP-driven. He’s slugged over .500 in ‘17-18, so depending on cost he might be worth a flier. Probably redundant with Chavis/Dalbec, but if Chavis starts at 2b and Dalbec in AAA, Aguilar might be useful for a few months, and flippable if he starts out hot. He'd be of more use than Sam Travis. Found a Brewers link from last S/T tho that showed he was out of options back then tho. optionStill, MLB Ref showed he only made tad less than 650k last year if roster could manage another RH hitting 1b/DH type entire season and hope for a 2018 type season out of him.

Never understood the radius of the blackout reach myself. Where you are has to be several hundred miles away. I'm for instance, 200m away from Miami and not blacked out. Tad over 3hrs on most driving conditions, via straight shot I4-I-75 to the stadium.
Have seen posts elsewhere of fans with handful of teams blacked out

Is this going by total dollars, or just by what the player produced? if it's produced, I'd nominate the 2/10m deal signed by Wayne Garland way back in the winter of '77. nearly uneard of amount for a player at the time and he blew out his rotator cuff after the 1st year, hardly pitching again. 1 thing new players could take from this was he did retire after a few years and forgive some of his salary.. Good or bad. However one looks at it. believe showman Bill Veeck was the owner of the Tribe when he was inked. Never heard of Wayne Garland and 10 million would have been a ton in 1977, so I looked it up. I see he signed a 10 year 2.3 million deal. He was also very good in 1977 before that injury posting a 4.1 bwar season. Still a lot of money back then, but 5 million a year would have been crazy money back then. That mistake was on me for not fixing after noticing my mistake. Should have been 10/2m instead. believe is longest pitching contract ever given not counting for deferred money and one of the earliest FA contracts for pitchers period. remember Messersmith, Fingers, Hunter of course earlier and that winter garland signed was the 1st kind of big season, so FA contracts were something new. Bill Campbell signed with Boston that winter and threw nearly 140IP in RELIEF and was never the same again, thanks to the worst sox manager in my time as a fan.. Don Zimmer.

So, uhh... if I were a free agent considering signing with the Yankees, this is something I might take note of. Corollary: seems super penny-wise and pound-foolish on the part of the Yankees. If it gets rid of that private medical team of boras.. it's worth it. how many remember when Ells disappeared without a word on his whereabouts that 1 season.. was it the year he ran into Beltre? Getting his "care" from the Boras team instead of Sox dr's and not returning calls/messages?

Think if no contract came out of an offseason FA classs going more than say..4y the MLBPA would definately start howling collusion then jimed. today's political climate (not trying to start anything there), believe it would get time mentioned, unlike last time collusion actually did happen during the late 80's.
My thoughts are that enough small teams refuse to spend and enough big market teams end up at/near the cap? could at some time be leaks to union/agents at some time regarding what is happening and which ownerships/locations are the cause and some kind of grievances brought against those by the MLBPA.

That fault would lie with team representatives and not with Tony Clark who seems to continually get hammered for the last CBA. Having intelligent, fairly well educated reps at the table who have some idea about the situation as a whole instead of looking out for #1 SHOULD have been top priority for every team in electing their respective representative.
It has to be understood that the negotiations are just that and everything the reps asked for, the ownership would ask for something in return and THOSE are business people who understand money. Electing non, or low educated reps due to popularity on a team is NOT how to help the game from a player's point of view. Will the MLBPA learn from this and not play the blame game is the question.

Silly me, I'm going to use logic here so I'll apologize up front. Now that the front office denizens have figured out they don't need to pay you for past performance, you need to have them pay you for current performance. Now it's the MLBPA's turn to figure a few things out. Ah yes Norm.. Back to the days of 1y contracts and after say.. 4-5y a player can jump ship and play for anyone they want to, but ONLY sign a 1y deal, then use that WAR type figure from the previous season to determine the amount received? It sounds like something neither side would agree to, but would like to see myself. Producing players get paid and no more contract sitters like Sandoval. Propose it and my guess is the MLBPA howls the loudest.

I fully support an unlimited length strike for the players to get what they want, as long as they fight for anyone other than the top 1% of player salaries. This is an even bigger reason for the Red Sox to go for it this year. Also, this is another indication that Manfred is completely worthless. Yup. I kind of miss Bus Selig. Selig was a spineless tool of the owners, just like every commish since Bowie Kuhn. Kuhn was the last one who had the guts to stand up for the good of the game and right vs wrong, like most of his predecessors did. Since him? Getting the job has been nothing more than how to vote for enriching the owners and voting for their way only and since Manfred? Siding with small market owners only, narrowly defining his role even more. I'd love to see a real, independent businessman put into the role.

Devon Fisher was the one will miss most checking on myself in boxes. When he 1st converted to pitching few years back, met his mom at Ft Myers one week when wife and I were down there. She really took an interest in his career. Sent her some pictures took of him that week and heard her and Kotch going over a work plan he had figured out for Devon. Both just really nice people and hard to see them forced away from the game.

From Alex Speier's Top 10: If he is able to pursue his pro career immediately, then he’d probably at least rank fourth in the system. If he can't put it off can look back to fellow USN alum (and heisman winner) Roger Staubach whom served 4y of naval duty that included 1y of shore duty in Vietnam before going on towards his NFL HOF career. Song will be what after 2y away? All of 24? It wouldn't be an end of world scenario towards his future as a ballplayer.

Wasn't trying to start some kind of nasty contest or anything with my above post, only temper expectations when kids struggle and stop expecting as much from them after have shown they are failing, or struggling. Dalbec was an example, latest of 1 IMO had been given the glory push. Could have named off Brian Johnson and the grand example.. Wil Middlebrooks.
Once again, the site is outstanding and proud to be a member of it. Come here daily to chk it out. Maybe everyone has an opinion on who is what type of prospect, but statuses do change.

Strikes me as odd where Song gets disected over command for locating spots during the tournament, probably because 1st time he's been on broadcast for the most part except for think was 1 game believe saw him on via MiLB broadcasts, yet Dalbec and the holes/ long swing he has had since was drafted STILL gets a pass as to how he will fare at the MLB level, much less AAA where he'll be at in 2020 against better pitching.
This biased vs certain prospects has gone on for years and been noticed. So has not getting off the band wagon of them until the complete breakdown. Yes.. I can go too far sometimes and be obnoxious to some, but also call things out have seen over the years.

Is a platoon of Dalbec and Ockimey even remotely possible or is that not possible based on the 26 man roster and their limited position flexibility? Along with the preferred extra reliever. I'd rather use a roster spot on a guy like Lin than someone such as Ockimey and then see if Moreland is willing to come back for around half the 6.5m he made last year.

Agreed on Kelley, along with most every other roster choice. Same with why Reyes was ever put on the 40 man and why he remains there.
Travis, IMO without any options should be removed now. His spot can be easily replaced if needed by an Indy pickup, AAAA floater at anytime for an emergency backup. It's not like anyone expects him to produce now. Should Holt sign, that would go miles to help Chavis out at 1b if Moreland, or another utility type does not come onboard.
Poyner and Johnson are another pair who should be looked at as DFA candidates, especially the out of options Johnson.

Only caught the end of Song's outing but loved that he caught the hitter looking with a damn curve for the third out. If he gets out of military service, he's going to be a mega steal. I get your point and in many ways hope he's able to delay his service as well to play ball, then it doesn't hurt any young man to join the service from a maturity standpoint, even if it's just a couple of years which think it may be in Song's case here. The military can do wonders for young kids regimen wise, even if only do 1 hitch as I did.

I am quite sure that tampering, by any definition goes on quite often between owners, GM's and agents. It's as much of a part of baseball as it is the business and legal world. Denying it exists is only putting on blinders and really.. It's only tampering if caught, otherwise it's nothing more than a shrewd business move.. Or legal maneuver..
